“Buck,” he says, the breath pulling from him in a gasp.
Buck’s eyes snap to him, blown wide and wild. Just like Eddie, he freezes in his step for one lingering moment, one click of a clock’s hand to say: Oh, it’s you. There you are, before he’s moving again.
“Eddie,” Buck says. There’s a red med-bag swinging from his shoulder, the strap slipping further down his arm as he rushes forward. “Jesus– Eddie.”
“That’s me,” Eddie replies weakly, and promptly collapses into Buck’s chest.

Eddie could cry in relief when he hears the happy ‘ding’ announcing the arrival of the elevator. Three more steps, and he enters the metal box, pawing at the buttons, pressing any that he comes in touch with. He doesn’t care where he’ll end up, as long as he’ll end up anywhere but the ground floor.
The doors to the elevator close slowly, too slowly, but finally the metal box starts its ascent to relative safety.
He’ll make it to the next floor, he’ll get medical help, he’ll be fine. He’ll be able to save the people still stuck downstairs.
Eddie almost laughs at that thought, relief coursing through him. Until the elevator stops with a lurch. The light flickers, the button for the 3rd floor taunting Eddie, its light switching on and off in fast intervals. The doors don’t open. Eddie knows why.
He’s stuck.
OR: Eddie gets shot in the hospital. Blood loss and the prospect of dying lead to groundbreaking realisations.

In all of his experiences and career, there's something about a true active shooter that terrifies him. In war, gunfire is an expectation. Five years ago it was targeted, specific. This? An active shooter in a hospital. With sick and dying people and waiting rooms full of loved ones just waiting for answers. It's almost too much to think of. Too much to bear, the idea of anyone here just to hurt with no regard, no reason that truly makes sense or a motive that he might be able to parse."

There’s a million questions rolling around in his head, banging against the walls of his skull, like, for example, what do four year olds even eat? Will Theo like normal pasta, or should he get the dinosaur-shaped pack just in case? Chocolate milk had been a hit last time, clearly, but is buying another bottle a recipe for disaster for the rest of Buck’s wardrobe? Is Theo allergic to anything? Will a banana covered in peanut butter spell an epipen and a trip to the hospital?
Simple questions that Buck should be able to answer, considering he’s a fully-grown adult, but every cell in his brain has been replaced with a neon sign displaying four words: you can’t do this.
Or, Buck gets a call that changes everything. Eddie helps him weather the storm.

Well. The remark made Eddie chuckle, at least. May still looks distressed, looking up at him with wide, terrified eyes.
"Relax. You did everything you can do while we're stuck in here," he tells her, opting for a small reassuring smile instead. God, he's tired. He needs to keep talking. "You need to get used to the gallows humor if you're gonna become a nurse."

But right now, as he is alive, laying underneath Buck in the hospital elevator. This could be it. He could bleed out, right now, despite Buck’s insistent efforts to keep him stable. He could utter the words on his lips and feel his soul chase him to hell, but with Buck’s hand on his cheek and eyes locked on his own, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Tonight, he is alive.
“Buck,” he stutters, low and whisper-like. He blinks back at Buck, kneeling over him, the raw blue of his eyes and the soft pink of his lips.

Another year, another research topic. I've seen a few conversations online regarding Pretty Cure Spirit Animals (or Animal Comparisons, as I call them), but sadly not only did those go nowhere, but the initial posts starting the debates were all deleted! So with a little help from some of the residual Reddit comments, I'm trying to finally answer that question for myself. What animal do I think best represents each Cure and why?
