Work Text:
In Gardenview there was a buzz as children ran around talking with their favorite toons they saw in the show. A few children went to the elevator to check out the rainbow rooms and what not but most resided in the main lobby. It was the 90s and it was almost the end of Gigi’s shift. The toons operated with shifts so they wouldn’t overwork themselves. Gigi decided to cut her shift a little bit earlier to go check up on Poppy. She could hear Poppy before seeing her as she chatted with the children. Her great energy never ceased to entertain them.
“Wow, Poppy! You are as fun and cool as the mains!”
“Heh! Thank you so much! Well I better be going now as my time is now ending. Who wants to learn about dinos with Shelly?”
The children’s focus was shifted to Shelly so Poppy could enjoy her free time. Poppy spotted Gigi out of the corner of her eye and went up to her.
“Oh hey, Gigi! Didn’t see you there.”
“Hey, Poppy. How are you doing?”
“Pretty good! Say when Gardenview closes for tonight would you like to hang out later?”
“Like.. a date?”
“Yes! How about in Sprout’s Diner and it’ll be a picnic! You in?”
“Oh uhm.. yes of course! I’d love to go on a date with you!! Let me just get ready!”
Gigi walked straight to her room to dress up. She just had to look her best on her date with Poppy. Poppy loved fashion and was always coming up with great outfits that matched whatever event she was at. She reached her closet and began to take out her clothes onto her bed. After her closet looked empty she began to put pieces of her clothes together to form an outfit. She put the outfits on to see how it looked in the mirror.
“No.. that’s too basic.. Ugh! That’s just plain ugly!” Gigi mumbled to herself as she threw each outfit to the floor if she deemed them unworthy. She had to impress Poppy with her fashion skills. She would probably dump her if she wasn’t as good with fashion as her.
After picking apart each outfit she curated, she had only two choices: her normal everyday clothes or her rainy day outfit. She wanted her clothes to show she cares so she picked the raincoat. It was different so it would hopefully catch Poppy’s eye. Just then Glisten walked past her room and peeked inside.
“Hey, Gigi. Do you still have my.. pfft-, girl. You do realize it’s not raining right now?” Glisten told Gigi while he pointed at her raincoat.
He shortly left seeing that she was clearly not in the mood as her whole closet was dumped on the floor. Gigi silently agreed with him, but still begrudgingly put on her usual clothing. She made her way to her vanity after her whole outfit fiasco. She carefully applied her mascara before leaving the room. As she was leaving she had the thought to contribute to the picnic so she decided to bring bubble tea and some macarons.
She went to the elevator with the goods and pressed the button to go to Sprout’s Diner. When the elevator stopped and opened she saw in the distance Poppy setting up the picnic. She looks so pretty while Gigi is just.. Gigi. It makes her feel unworthy of Poppy’s love but she gathers up her courage and goes up to greet her before setting down the treats.
“Wow, Poppy, you are so sweet for setting this up all by yourself, and you look so.. gorgeous!”
Poppy had on a dark red dress with white accents along the edge of her dress. The dress had semitransparent sleeves and a white ribbon tied into a bow on her chest. Her signature bow matched the classic picnic blanket pattern.
“Heh. Too bad I’m not as well-dressed as you, am I right? Ha!” Gigi said, due to her being insecure about what she was currently wearing.
It was clear to Poppy that Gigi was starting to feel insecure. Poppy had a look of concern on her face before responding, “I like fashion, Gigi, you know that. This is just something I wanted to wear. I don’t expect you to live up to that. I love you for you! I couldn’t care less what you wear. I wouldn’t have blinked an eye if you had decided to come with your pj’s.”
Gigi visibly relaxes as she gives a small smile to Poppy and sits on the picnic blanket to see all the treats Poppy has brought. She brought two slices of cherry pie and sliders with a couple of pops.
Poppy gasps at what Gigi brought, “Wow, is that.. bubble tea!?”
“Heh.. yeah! I know it’s your favorite! I also brought a couple of macarons.”
“This picnic is quite a feast, don’t you think?” Poppy exclaims as she serves Gigi a slice of cherry pie and her slider.
Gigi quietly agrees as she gives Poppy her bubble tea. They occasionally eat as they talk about Gardenview, Dandy, the other toons, and how they have been doing. Gigi looks at Poppy lovingly, noting a smidge of the cherry pie filling near her mouth. She nods to whatever Poppy is saying before wiping Poppy’s mouth and licking her finger to not waste anything.
“Hah! You’re nasty, Gigi!!” Poppy said teasingly as she pushed Gigi softly.
-After the picnic date-
Gigi and Poppy cleaned up their picnic so it looked as if they were never there. They both go back inside the elevator and go to the toon rooms. Gigi goes to Poppy’s floor first to walk her there. As they reach her bedroom door, Poppy turns to talk to Gigi.
“I have really enjoyed my time with you, Gigi. I want you to know that.”
“Heh. Can’t say I disagree! You are very sweet to ask me on that date and to set it up.”
Poppy gives a small smile to Gigi before leaning closer to her. She closes the gap between her and Gigi, noting how soft her lips are before responding with, “Well, you are sweet for accepting and getting my favorite tea drink.”
Poppy then goes into her room, keeping Gigi speechless outside of her room. Gigi knew how bold Poppy was but did not expect that to happen. She felt like her heart was beating out of her chest. She caught the next elevator down to go to her floor where her room was. Tired and flustered, Gigi flopped onto her bed leaving her clothes her future self’s problem. Before she went to sleep, she couldn’t help but think how lucky she was to have Poppy in her life.
“I’m going to get her next time.. perhaps a shopping spree..?” Gigi mumbled to herself as she drifted in and out of sleep.
