Chapter 1: 01

Chapter Text

INT- HOTEL LOBBY. KATHERINE is standing on a chair, cranking a can opener near an open vent. BEN walks in from the side, not wearing his jacket

BEN:

Hey mom, have you seen Esther? I’m pretty sure she took my jacket- [Seeing her odd position] Woah, what’s going on here?

KATHERINE:

Something has been crawling around in the vents and stealing all my can openers.

BEN:

How many can openers do we have exactly?

KATHERINE:

In the entire hotel? Four. I kept buying them and they kept disappearing, but I’m not going to take my eyes off this one. I’m trying to get it to come out willingly… I could hear it grinding one of them all night last night.. [She glances at BEN] What was it you were looking for again?

BEN:

My jacket.

KATHERINE:

Don’t you have like seven of those?

BEN:

Yeah, but they took my Tuesday jacket..

KATHERINE:

I haven’t seen it, but I’ll see if I can’t find it in this thing’s stash of stuff. Why don’t you go ask your sister?

BEN:

Okay, but you know she doesn’t understand the delicate balance of my jacket system.

BEN walks away and KATHERINE focuses on the vent. She sets the can opener inside the vent shaft and watches closely

KATHERINE:

[To the vent} I know you want this can opener.. You can’t seem to resist spinning it around right as I’m about to get to sleep..

NATHAN enters, interrupting her

NATHAN:

Good news! You don’t have to clean those herbs you bought yesterday! Bad news, most of them are missing. But that’s no big deal, I’d say there’s plenty enough left for at least one of us to have a darn good slice of pizza.

KATHERINE groans in frustration and dips her head

NATHAN:

Say, are you still hunting that can opener critter?

KATHERINE:

I heard it in the vents yesterday. It’s taunting me..

NATHAN:

Are you sure it’s not just Abaddon?

KATHERINE:

I know what Abaddon crawling in the vents sounds like, Nathan.

NATHAN:

If it’s botherin you that much, why don’t you call pest control?

KATHERINE:

Why don’t I call pest control? Are you serious right now? [She turns to face him.] Everything in this house is cursed, or immortal, or incorporeal-

A ghost walks through the wall and phases through her, stopping to notice her

GHOST: [Coyly] Excuse me..

The GHOST moves along

KATHERINE:
What do you think a terminator is going to do?

NATHAN:

I know this place is a little bit bizarre,

A doorway disappears

NATHAN:

But it’s always important to rule out the ordinary before you jump to the supernatural.

KATHERINE:

I’ll take my chances.

NATHAN:

Do what you want, but I’ve seen this story before. It starts with good intentions, but it ends with accidentally mistaking a paying customer for a creature of the deep woods. That kind of stuff ends you up in jail, Katherine.

NATHAN walks off. KATHERINE looks confused, then turns back to her work and the can opener has vanished

KATHERINE:

For god’s sake!
