Chapter Text

Sonic was gone.

The Sonic that had briefly warmed his desolate existence, offered him a glimpse of companionship, had vanished back into his own dimension, leaving Nine to face an eternity of quiet. Everyone who had fought against him had returned to their own dimension he assumed.

The loneliness was suffocating. It wasn't the kind of loneliness Nine was used to. He missed the blue blur’s easy confidence, his infectious optimism, even his exasperating heroism. He missed being seen.

So, Nine built. His goal was clear—to punch a hole through the very fabric of reality, to find Sonic. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. His device grew, a device designed to lock onto a specific universal signature – the one that resonated with the Sonic he knew.

Finally, the moment arrived. The the ground beneath his shoes trembled. Nine, exhausted but alight with a desperate hope, activated the device. A vortex of swirling colors and bright light erupted from the machine’s core, tearing a rift in the Grim’s desolate sky.

He felt the familiar pull, the sensation of being stretched and squeezed as reality warped around him. This was it. A leap of faith into the unknown, chasing a ghost of a memory. The landing was harsh, a sudden thud after the dimension-hopping.

.

.

Nine blinked, his vision slowly adjusting. Before him, stretching to a horizon painted with fluffy white clouds, lay a landscape of green. Rolling hills dotted with checkerboard patterns, vibrant flowers swaying in a gentle breeze, and loops and springs that defied gravity. It was the exact opposite of the Grim.

Sonics world. He had only seen it once, and even then was it gloomy and practically falling apart.

His tails twitched with a mixture of awe and denial as he looked around. Was it real? Had he truly made it?

Green eyes locked on his.

“Nine?” The voice oh-so-familiar, sent a jolt through Nine. He spun around, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

Standing on a nearby loop-de-loop, hands on his hips, was Sonic the Hedgehog. The unmistakable blue, his smile wide and confident. He wasn't fractured, and the prism energy taken from him wasn’t slowly sucking the life out of him. He was whole, radiant, there.

.

.

For a moment, Nine could only stare, a lump forming in his throat. It felt like an eternity since he'd seen him, a lifetime since he’d heard that voice. Tears pricked at the corner of his eyes, a sensation he hadn't experienced in millennia.

Nine finally found his voice, a little wobbly, "Sonic. It's... it's really you." He took a hesitant step forward, then another, the desperate hope that had fueled his journey now blossoming into overwhelming relief.

.

.

The hedgehog zoomed down the loop and skidded to a halt in front of Nine, before he could even blink.  Nine lunged forward, wrapping his arms around Sonic in a tight, desperate embrace. A gesture he’d only done once, and that was after he almost killed the azure hedehog. Sonic reciprocated the hug, a comfortable arm around Nine’s shoulders.

"I missed you," Nine whispered, the words laced with a vulnerability he rarely showed.

“Missed you too, pal," Sonic replied warmly, pulling back with a chuckle. "Though I gotta be honest, I didn't think I'd ever see you again. But hey, I'm glad you're here! This place is way better than the Grim, right?"

"Sonic! Who's our new friend?" A new voice, more high-pitched, a bit raspy, and curious, broke the reunion.

Nine looked over Sonic's shoulder. Hovering a few feet above the ground, his two tails spinning like propellers, was another fox. Bright baby blue eyes and a friendly expression.

This was his Tails. The original. The one Sonic had spoken of, confused him with, the one whose existence Nine had envied in the Grim. "Oh, right!" Sonic beamed. "Nine, this is Tails. Tails, this is Nine! He's... well, he's kind of like an alternate version of you, but from a really wild dimension I accidentally ended up in, remember what I told you about?" Tails landed, his two namesakes settling behind him. He looked at Nine with genuine fascination. "Nine tails? That’s incredible! How do they work? Do they spin like mine? Are they stronger? What kind of technology did you use to get here?" His questions tumbled out in a flurry, his eyes wide with scientific curiosity.

Nine managed a small, tight smile. "Uhm.." He mumbled his eyes darting between Tails and Sonic. Sonic ruffled Tails’ head fur, a gesture of casual affection. “Woah! Slow down buddy, one question at a time.” Tails leaned into it, laughing awkwardly, a comfortable familiarity that spoke of years of shared experiences. It was a bond strong and unbreakable. A bond Nine had only ever dreamed of.

A knot was tying in Nine's chest, envy.

This Tails was bright, eager, and clearly Sonic's best friend. Nine, for all his genius and his extra tails, felt suddenly like a clumsy imitation, a stand-in. He was an alternate version.

Sonic had found him in the New Yoke, needed his help, but he hadn't been his Tails. He'd been an emergency replacement, a temporary ally. Now, here, in Sonic's true home, Nine saw where he truly stood. On the outside, looking in at the perfect duo.

.

.

.

Over the next few days, Nine tried to shake the feeling, but it clung to him.

He saw the way Sonic instinctively looked to Tails for input, the way Tails finished Sonic's sentences. It was seamless, effortless.

When Sonic tried to include Nine, asking for his input, Nine would offer brilliant solutions, often far more complex and efficient. But he couldn't replicate the warmth, the shared history. He was the prodigy, the genius, but not the friend in the same way.

One afternoon, while Sonic was out on a solo run, Tails found Nine doing something with the device that allowed him to come here.

"That’s an amazing piece of tech, Nine," Tails said, his voice genuinely impressed. "I’ve never seen anything like it. The energy output alone is phenomenal!“

Nine, startled, looked up. “Well, it took quite some time..” Tails' eyes sparkled, he was almost bouncing with excitement.

Nine hesitated, then slowly presented a data slate with the information. As Tails read and skimmed over them, gasping in admiration at the complexity, Nine felt a strange flicker of something other than envy. A shared passion.

And so, Nine stayed. He even met Sonic’s other friends, who slowly became his.

Amy Rose immediately swept him up in a hug, declaring him as a friend. Knuckles, after initial skepticism, respected Nine's intellect when he cleverly helped them with yet another Eggman battle.

But it was with Sonic and Tails that Nine truly found his place. The workshop, once primarily Tails' domain, now buzzed with the combined genius of two of the smartest minds in their dimension.

Nine helped Tails refine his inventions, offering insights. Sonic, watching them together, two geniuses in one workshop they could be unstoppable.

He now had two brilliant foxes to bounce ideas off of, two loyal companions to share adventures with. Nine and Tails evolved into a healthy, respectful partnership, each pushing the other to greater heights. They still had their individual quirks, their distinct personalities, but they were a team.

.

.

.

One evening, as the three of them sat on a hill, watching the Green Hill sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and purple, Sonic leaned back, a contented sigh escaping him.

"You know," Sonic said, looking from Nine to Tails, "I used to think my life was pretty perfect with just me and Tails." He grinned. "Now, with you here too, Nine... it feels even more complete.“

Nine looked at Sonic, then at Tails who smiled. The silence that followed was comforting.

Nine finally felt it – the warmth of belonging. He smiled, for real.

The Grim would probably be abandoned now, he had no need to return back to its chilling solitude.

He wasn’t just an alternate version, he was his own real person. And he had finally found his home.

Notes:

If you couldn’t already tell, I love Tails. So I automatically love Nine too, it’s un debatable.

Honestly wish Sonic Prime had a different ending, don’t get me wrong I like the show; just felt it was a little rushed.
