Work Text:
They had been wandering around in the forest for an hour now.
They had been attacked by a few wolves after a stroll. Of course Meliodas being strong as he is had no problems dealing with them whatsoever and even the wolf that was able to get to him and throw him off balance was seen fleeing soon after. But that one hit had fatal consequences as Meliodas stumbled backwards bumping into Liz, who was waiting for him to finish, who then pushed the Chicken Matango she was leaning on a tad too much which led to the creature feeling endangered and blowing up its surroundings with explosive spores.
Meliodas had shielded Liz from most of the damage but he didn’t see the cliff they were standing on breaking coming. And thus they fell.
“Do you have any idea where we are?”, Liz eventually asked Meliodas.
“Mh”, he made but didn’t elaborate on his surely deep thoughts any further.
By now Liz had lost any orientation she had after falling down the cliff. And the worst thing about this situation was that it was getting dark.
She started searching for any landmarks she knew too but instead of getting closer she felt as if they were going farther and farther away.
“Meliodas, I don’t think we’re on the right way here…” No answer. “Hey, Meliodas, are you listening?”, she held him back by the shoulder.
“Trust me, I know where I’m going”, he said with a mischevious grin when he turned around to her. She wasn’t sure what to think about that. Maybe he did know where they were going but if he did… what was he planning?
They soon reached a clearing and Meliodas’s pace slowed down until he eventually stopped in front of a big rock. He beckoned her over and while she was suspicious she followed his call.
He gestured her to pass the rock, following right after her. Her eyes opened up wide when she saw a medium-sized lake, its water shimmering in the fading light of the day. It was a beautiful sight that she didn’t expect to see. She turned to Meliodas, her eyes still wide open and he smiled at her softly, something that she didn’t see happening often either. She smiled back at him.
“I get it. So you planned this all along”, she said while climbing on the rock.
“Not all along”, Meliodas admitted following her. “Only when we were wandering around and I realized this place was near”
Liz sat down as comfortably as she could on the hard uneven surface waiting for the other one to join her.
He noticed her expression and added “If I told you it wouldn’t have been a surprise, would it?”
“Nah… Guess you were right”, she said gazing over the calm surface of the water below her feet.
In it she saw herself and Meliodas right beside her and she smiled. Seeing both of them together like this, like a real couple felt to unreal. They were both knights, originally from different kingdoms and thus enemies but now they were here together relaxing by a lake at sunset.
She felt for his hand and softly squeezed it when she found it. He replied to that by caressing the back of her hand with his thumb.
Liz averted her gaze from the still water to look at her lover instead.
She put on the most mysterious smile she was able to produce and asked him “Guess what I’m thinking right now”
“Huh?”, he seemed confused but that could be an act. His face turned into a grimace, his eyes showing curiosity though. “How would I know if you don’t tell me?”
She let out a small laugh, it didn’t matter if he did or didn’t know, she leaned in on him caressing his cheek with her left hand while leaning on her right. She continued staring into his clear green eyes as long as she could before she closed her eyes when she pressed a kiss on his lips.
He stopped moving for a split second before rushing his hand through her short hair holding her as if to tell her not to stop. When she opened her eyes to dissolve the kiss she immediately stared into his eyes again and backed off from him startled and embarrassed.
“D-did you have your eyes open the whole time?!”, she shrieked.
All she got was a grin. She couldn’t believe it. She poured all her feelings into that kiss and he completely ruined the moment.
Liz turned away from him and skidded down the rock landing on soft mushy earth.
She stomped along the waterside frustrated. She knew she shouldn’t be so angry but she couldn’t help it. For her it was a special moment and to think he stared at her the whole time with his eyes wide open like that…
She heard splashing behind her when Meliodas waded through the squishy ground.
“Come on”, he asked her. “What are you so angry about?”
The problem was: She didn’t really know. She cursed her womanhood for making her act like an unreasonable termagant now of all times. But now she was also too embarrassed to turn back and act like nothing happened.
Meliodas finally managed to get a hold of her and held her back but she still wouldn’t look at him, instead he was forced to stare at her back.
“Liz, look at me, come on”, he pleaded.
She wanted to but she felt so bad right now and didn’t know how to react. She acted to stupid and she didn’t know how to make up with him.
It was when she made up her mind and turned around that he tugged on her arm and the momentum of the movement made her crash directly into him. Didn’t they experience enough falling down already today?
With a loud splash both of them landed in the water, she thanked god that it wasn’t cold anymore because it was deep enough for her whole body to sink in. Meliodas was lying below her, completely immersed in the water. She hurried to straighten herself and pull at least his head out so he wouldn’t accidently drown. As soon as his face emerged out of the lake he spit out whatever water got into his mouth and made a face that showed very distinctly what he thought about every millimeter of his body being involuntarily drenched. It was the kind of face you usually don’t see on him since he isn’t fazed by much, he’s seen and experienced too much, he was already so used to all kinds of situations but apparently this was new even for him.
It started as quiet snickering but soon turned into loud laughing because Liz couldn’t get over his drenched appearance. For some reason it seemed just unbelievably funny and the now revolted look that mixed in on Meliodas’ face didn’t make it any better. She still sat on top of him and wouldn’t let him stand up either, not even giving him a chance to do anything about his appearance.
“Just... look at yourself”, she pressed out between her fits of laughter. She was at the point where it actually hurt so much she had to hold her stomach. “You look so stupid… You’re Wetliodas!”
Suddenly she felt his lips on hers and his arms around her body with his hands grabbing at the cloth at her back for stability. He took her by surprise while she still had to fight against the urge to burst out into laughter again. His eyes were closed this time. It felt like time stopped, she wasn’t able to move, she didn’t want to move and she couldn’t take her eyes off of him, his face so close to hers and so… almost passionate. But time started moving again, he opened his eyes and released her lips.
“Huh? What are you doing with your eyes open?”, he teased her.
It took her a moment to find her voice again and even then all she could say was
“I’m sorry”
It seemed enough for him but not for her. “I’m sorry, I overreacted… I-“, another kiss kept her from ending her sentence though. He softly pushed her to the ground, now lying on her, only deepening the kiss. She thought about checking if his eyes were closed but that didn’t matter now. It didn’t matter that her head was sinking a bit into the muddy ground, it didn’t matter that her hair was completely getting wet now, she closed her eyes and kissed him back. She closed her arms around him, they would stop for a second to get some air but immediately went in for another kiss. Liz shrieked when Meliodas tickled her without a warning and rolled around in the mud to escape his attack. He knew exactly what spots made her go crazy and only went for those. Liz half-heartedly flailed around, tried to go into the offensive herself but wasn’t able to. She grabbed after his hands and used them to squish Meliodas own face which made her laugh again. She pressed his hands against his face pulling it closer to hers again and placed a small kiss on his nose what made him blink.
As she got lost in his eyes she noticed a flimmering green light in his eyes. It wasn’t that his eyes decided to literally shine now but only the reflection of the light of close to one hundred fireflies glimmering in the now completely dark night sky. One of them even decided to stay on the tip of Meliodas’ nose. Its lit up behind illuminated his face and made his eyes sparkle in an unnatural but unbelievably beautiful way. He let out a small laugh, then rolled off Liz and lied beside her in the mud.
He took her hand and without saying anything else they both looked up in the sky watching the stars and the fireflies dancing around them.
