Sidewalk Talks in the Spring

Summary:

Asui and Uraraka go out to get snacks and find the space to confess along the way

(aka. a sweet little exercise from a while back)

Work Text:

The two girls’ school shoes tapped on the sidewalk, grocery bags in hand and smiles on their faces. The corner store faded into the background as they made their way through the busy city streets. They darted in between the buildings that managed to tower over them despite being smaller in comparison to the larger cities nearby. The girl with brown hair, Uraraka, pointed towards a department store. “ Tsu, isn’t that the place you mentioned last time we were here?”
She ribbited in agreement. “ Yeah, that’s where I got those rabbit gummies when Ashido ate all of them before we got a chance to try it.”
Tsu broke into a smile as Uraraka giggled. “Glad she enjoyed them, but it would’ve been nice to get to try them,” she said as her smile made her eyes squint. “Her face afterwards was totally worth it, though!”
“She looked like she had committed a crime!”
The two turned towards the store, fingertips brushing lightly against each other. Their eyes met for a short moment before quickly glancing away. Blush dashed across their cheeks before Tsu looked up. "Looks like they have specialty cupcakes for spring," she said. "Look! They have a frog"
"It looks like you!" Uraraka cheered, poking her in the arm. Tsu ribbited in agreement.
The two walked in, the small bell ringing above them. The shelves were about as tall as they were and lined with various sweet treats that would probably give anyone within a mile about a dozen cavities. Towards the back was a comically small bakery being run by an older teenager that looked like a mixture between sleep deprived and in need of a cigarette. They peered at the small candies up front, grabbing each other's hands excitedly and pointing when they found something cute.
"Look at these little guys!" Uraraka squeaked. "They're grape flavored, too!"
"I thought you didn't like grape?" Tsu asked, looking at her like she had grown a second head.
"No it's the cherry ones they make that I don't like, the grape ones are actually pretty good"
They said a long drawn out graaapppee together before starting to look around in opposite directions.
The bell rang again right around the time Tsu was back by the bakery and called out, " Hey Uraraka!! They have the candy thingies we were looking for!" There was a click of her heels before Uraraka's head popped out from around the corner and her hair fell across her face.
"The rabbit ones?"
"Yeah, they have new colors too," Tsu ribbited. She grabbed a few bags to add to their basket and they walked up to the cashier.
The tree branches swayed slightly in the wind which also blew their hair back behind them as they walked towards the park. Uraraka was trying to grab leaves as they blew away. Tsu was attempting to keep her hair tied back. They were both failing miserably, but laughing together every time either of them almost tripped or got a very rude wind blast to the face.
The park wasn’t very busy, just some old ladies watching their grandchild but the playground and a few people walking their very wrinkly dogs. The two girls started down the path lined with cherry blossom trees, walking side by side.
Uraraka ran up to spin around in a circle, throwing her arms up and running her fingers through her hair. Tsu smiled fondly at her, swinging the grocery bag back and forth. “There’s something so nice about the beginning of spring when everything’s come back to life,” Uraraka said with a soft contentedness.
“Yeah, the flowers blooming and everyone getting a boost of good moods definitely makes it a fun time,” Tsu ribbited.
“Ah, the season of love.”
“Unfortunately, that means it’s Mineta’s season of being completely annoying,” Tsu groaned. “He literally won’t leave me alone, not sure if he’s too stupid to get the hint or if he just doesn’t care.”
“Knowing Mineta, it could very well be both,” Uraraka agreed.
“He’s so not my type whatsoever.”
“What even is your type, I’ve never known you when you had a crush on someone, well I mean-” Uraraka asked.
“-Hey, that doesn’t count.”
“He looks like he hasn’t slept in years and naps in a sleeping bag, Tsu, I do not understand what you saw in him,” Uraraka poked.
“I can not be held responsible for my strange crushes, that one was probably the weirdest, though.”
There was a comfortable silence between the two, before Tsu moved to speak again. “My type is girls,” she said quietly.
“What?”
“You asked me what my type is. My type is girls,” she repeated.
“Oh, uh, same, I guess,” Uraraka responded, her face flushing with red.
“You know what else is my type, Uraraka?” Tsu said even quieter than normal, stopping and looking up at her. She pushed her bangs out of her eyes and started to pull at the sleeves of her shirt.
“No-”
“My type is you, Uraraka.”
Uraraka mumbled a mixture of what only kind of sounded like words. She took a deep breath and clenched her hands down by her sides. “You are also very much my type.”
The wind swirled around them, lifting their hair and making their skirts sway with the trees. Uraraka held out her hand and Tsu intertwined their fingers together. She leaned in and left a small smooch on Uraraka’s nose. They were both about as pink as the candy they bought and glanced at the ground.
They simply turned to keep walking and the palms of their hands sweated as they exchanged glances together in the cherry blossom-fueled season of love.
