Izuku clutched his pillow to his chest, his phone discarded to his side. He hiccuped slightly as the tears dribbled hopelessly down his face. His dad coming back from America wasn’t what he wanted to hear from his mother at all. His mother always said his dad left for business. But that wasn’t the case and as Izuku grew, he began to realise that. Izuku’s dad left because Izuku was quirkless. So all in all, that made it Izuku’s fault, right?
Izuku coughed, trying to muffle his sobs into his pillow. His dad was only coming back because Izuku had a quirk now. How Izuku was going to explain it to him, he didn’t know. Maybe he’d say he was just a late bloomer. Maybe he’d be forced to tell the truth. With Midoriya Hisashi, you could never know what words would be coming out your mouth, or what he’d twist them to be.
Izuku didn’t like his father very much. He wasn’t the nicest guy on the planet. He’d hurt his mother. A lot. Though Izuku had never really thought this before, he really hated his father. He thought he was a bastard. Running away from his family. Hurting his mother. Bastard.
Though, Izuku guessed, he’d rather his father run than stay with him and his mum. Who knows what growing up would’ve been like with him there? He’d likely have no break from the constant teasing and bullying he endured at school, his father would continue it at home. Maybe Katsuki would even say he deserved that.
Maybe the bullying from his father wouldn’t have stopped there. Maybe it would’ve gotten physical, like it did with his mother. Izuku shuddered. He didn’t want to think of that. Another cry escaped his lips as he buried his face deeper into his pillow.
“Deku!”
Katsuki’s gruff voice rang out through the door. “Deku, you bastard, open the fuck up! I gotta talk to you!”
Izuku made no move to get up. If Katsuki wanted to yell at him about his quirk again or whatever, he could do it from outside his dorm.
—
Katsuki sighed. He was used to the nerd shutting people out. He didn’t even know why he cared. Scratch that, he didn’t. But for some reason, he’s found himself at Shitty Deku’s dorm door, his phone clutched in his hand, the message from Inko still on the screen.
‘Check up on Izuku for me, please? He’s left me on read. His dad’s coming back from America.’
Fucking Midoriya Hisashi. Katsuki let out a frustrated groan and kicked the door. “Izuku. Let me the fuck in now.”
—
Izuku, as much as he’d deny it if you asked him, actually gasped at Katsuki using his actual name. He hadn’t called him that since they were both five. FIVE.
11 years ago was a long time. 15 years ago was even longer. Izuku dragged himself off his bed and into the bathroom to drown out Katsuki's knocking and yelling. He knew Aizawa-sensei wouldn't be happy with him being in there when he was in this state, he's been through this before. But everytime he feels better, something else happens and he's right back in that pit, clawing at the walls, the promising walls that turn to sand as he reaches to climb out like and endless taunt, and when he does get back out, someone or something is there to push him back in.
The bathroom is a very familiar place with Izuku. He could navigate it with his eyes closed. His fingers drift to his cabinet and he pulls it open by the handle, his hands finding the bottle of pills he leaves in there. His anti-depressants. The first time, Izuku didnt even know you could overdose on anti-depressants. Now he did, it made things like this quicker. The twist of the lid, the sound of the pills in the bottle as he fished them out and dropped them into his mouth, the breaking of the door, the hands on his shoulders, the yelling-
Oh.
-----
Katsuki nearly screamed as he saw Izuku on the floor of his bathroom with the pills in his hands. He scrambled forward and ripped the bottle out of his hands before shaking him with his own. "DEKU, WHAT THE FUCK."
He nearly screamed, hoping his voice was loud enough to break the nerd out of whatever state he was clearly in. "Spit them the FUCK OUT! C'MON, ZUKU."
Izuku stared at him for a second before leaning forward and retching, spitting the pills he'd shoved in his mouth moments before onto the bathroom floor. Katsuki pulled him in for a hug. What the fuck?
Katsuki clutched Izuku's head against his chest. That all looked too simple for Izuku. Had this happened before? Had this happened and he'd not been told? What if Izuku attempted when he'd told him to? Was this spiral his fault? Oh god, he fucking hoped not. He. Fucking. Hoped. Not.
----
Aizawa watched the wonder duo as they curled up on Izuku's bedroom floor, bottle of anti-depressants resting like a weight in his hand. He felt terrible for not getting their quicker. But Bakugo did. It was all fine now. It was going to stay that way. Aizawa would make it. For his students. He WILL see them all graduate. WILL.
