Chapter 1: Runaway

Chapter Text

Felix was looking in the mirror while getting ready for bed, he looked more tired than the handyman he remembers, his eyes were more sunken in, bags were under his eyes, and the only thing he was thinking of was ‘do I really want this? Do I want to be the “good guy” everyone expects me to be?’, but as he was thinking, there was a knock on the bathroom door.

“Fix-it, you alright in there?” asked his lovely wife, Tamora, or at least that's what he thought 3 years ago on his wedding day.

“Yeah, I'm fine Tammy, just… thinking…” Said the handyman, continuing to get ready for bed.

Once he finished getting ready, he went to bed, but he wasn't as excited to cuddle his wife as he usually is because in reality, he wasn't happy anymore, he wasn't happy with his marriage, he wasn't happy with his friends, he wasn't with his life, he was tired of being the “good guy”, it was getting stressful, the Nicelanders would always pester him with their problems, broken cups, neighborly squabbles, any problem they had they would bring to him, all because he was the “hero”, he didn't want this life anymore, but he knew he couldn't just leave, Tamora was still married to him, he had already filed the papers, he was going to divorce her tomorrow, he would leave the papers on the table with a note before the arcade opens for her to read at her game so she couldn't talk to him, he knew what he was planning was selfish, he knew his wife would be devastated, he knew his game would be unplugged, he knew all the gameless characters he gave homes to would be gameless again, but he couldn't take it anymore, he was tired and he didn't know what else to do, and as he kissed his wife goodnight for the last time, he took a long look at her face, rethinking his decisions? Maybe, but he was too tired to rethink more, so he went to bed.

The next day, Calhoun finds her husbands wedding ring on the counter, along with an envelope with a note on it; “Open this when you're at your game - love, Felix”, she immediately knew what they were, but she decided to do what the note said, so she pocketed it before leaving, walking past Felix without saying goodbye, he wasn't hurt though, he knew he might have to talk with Calhoun when she got back, but he hoped the note he left inside the envelope would be read and maybe, just maybe, she would leave without a fight.

He went about his day as normal after that, fixing the building, throwing Ralph in the mud, the usual, but he knew this day would be his last, at least he hoped, he had it planned out, he would run away that night after Calhoun left, if he was gone he wouldn't have to go to court, right? He just prayed Calhoun would sign the papers without a fight, but knowing his Sergeant, she probably wouldn't.

That night went better than he expected, Calhoun left her ring and the opened envelope, the one containing the now signed divorce papers, on the counter before packing her things and leaving, he knew he hurt her bad, he could see it in her eyes, the same eyes that held love on the day they married, the same eyes he loved looking at, those eyes were now holding back tears, tears she would never release to anyone anywhere.

Calhoun was heartbroken, she had read the note with the divorce papers; “My dear Tammy, I'm sorry to break your heart like this, but I've just become tired, not just of you, but of everything, please sign the papers and take anything you want in the divorce, I won't fight - love, Felix”, she wanted to cry, to scream, but she knew he had made up his mind, so she left without a fight, only crying when she got to hero's duty, her heart was aching, but she couldn't do anything about it, the love of her life divorced her, so she cried, she cried until she couldn't, she thought she could love again, she thought he was the one, but he wasn't, and she didn't know what else to do, at least he was respectful about it though, but she felt like he was planning something else other than divorce… something that would be burned into the memories of games forever…

The next day, Felix wasn't in his game, this shocked the residents of Fix-it-felix. Jr, he would never just leave like that, right!? He wouldn't leave without informing anyone, this had to be a mistake, maybe he was lost in a different game, maybe even drunk at tappers, though that was unlikely, he hardly ever goes to tappers uninvited, but where could he be!? They would be unplugged without him! And Fix-it-felix. Jr was the home to hundreds of gameless characters, where would they go if the game was unplugged!? So many panicked questions and problems, but nobody to help! Where is Felix!?

Meanwhile, Felix was in the internet, seeing people with letters and strange pictures on their face, he was confused, some teleported away, others were playing on strange things on their wrists, he was confused about it all, but he knew he couldn't go back now, not after the stunt he pulled, so he walked around, looking at all the buildings, some had nothing on them, others said things like “Spotify” and “YouTube”, he was understanding nothing, not knowing where he was going, and only had a backpack with basic supplies (med kit, food, ect) and the clothes he was wearing, and if he were to be completely honest right now, he's scared out of his mind, he could get stabbed, so he sat down on a bench, he was starting to regret his decisions slightly, he regrets leaving Calhoun, he regrets leaving his game and the security it provided, but what he didn't regret was leaving behind all the stress and slight anxiety from having to be the “good guy” all the time, he didn't have to deal with anyone coming to him with their problems anymore, but… he was starting to miss his Tammy dearly, he knew that if she was here, she would be comforting him, but he knew she couldn't, she would never leave her game like he did, he knows that, so he decides to sleep to escape the overwhelming sense of dread.

When Felix wakes up, he's in a random bed? How did he end up here? Where is he? Why is it a race car bed? But before he could think more, the door opened
