Waking up to a new day, I'll try not to burn

Summary:

It's been over 200 years since Scott last saw Avid. Since Avid was betrayed and killed by Owen and Pyro. Now, Shelby, Scott, and Drift live in New York City, 2006. They still mourn their friend, but they seem to have moved on for the most part. Until one morning when someone from the past knocks on the door.

Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

As Scott awoke on a Wednesday morning in his (and Shelby’s) New York Apartment, Scott groaned at the feeling of the sun through his window. Despite not needing sleep, the vampire's roommate's habits had rubbed off on him. But he still hated the sun. He stood up and drew the curtains closed. He had forgotten to close them after flying around the city for a bit. Scott dressed in a pair of jeans, one of his shirts from a modern band he liked, and his black jacket.

He stepped out of his room and into the living room. Shelby must've been in her room still, as he didn't see his favorite roommate. Scott goes to the fridge and pulls out a bottle of blood. He, Shelby, and Drift were still friends with Cleo and Pearl, who would send them some blood from Oakhurst's livestock every few weeks. They were friends with a few of the other survivors, though some they’d rather have lost contact with a long time ago.

As Scott was drinking the blood, he thought about work. After moving to New York, while Shelby did the whole writing thing, despite having immense wealth, still worked. He worked at the museum nearby. It made sense, teaching stuff he was around for and older than. But, he didn't feel like going to the museum today. Maybe he'd go to the park or something. Anything to not think about……. no, it was too early to be thinking about him and what could've been. Scott told himself after he, Shelby, and Drift left that he'd move on. He told himself that while he'd miss the self proclaimed vampire hunter, it would be just that. But it wasn't “just that”. His dreams were filled with his voice. His laugh. His face. Scott saw him everywhere he went.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Scott wondered if Shelby ordered something. Or maybe Drift was coming for a surprise date with Shelby. He walked over to the door, and called out, “Shel, did you order something and not tell-” he froze as he saw who was on the other side.

Avid. He was still wearing the old clothes from Scott's old wardrobe, though they were very dirty and torn. There was a hole through to where his heart was. There were a bunch of leaves all over him, and even a branch in his hair. He had some black makeup running down his face too, as if he had been crying. Scott looked shocked, and rightfully so. It had been over 200 years. Over 200 years since Avid died.

Avid was looking around the hallway before noticing Scott. He smiled softly and said quietly in that pretty voice Scott missed so much, “Hi.” He said it as if he hadn’t been dead for over 200 years. As if Scott hadn’t mourned him.

Before Scott could stop himself, he did something he hadn’t done since he woke up from that 600 year nap he was forced to take. He started to tear up. Scott immediately pulled him into his arms, holding him as if Avid would die again if he let go. Avid was clearly shocked, but hugged him back. Scott’s grip tightened on his Avid, feeling possessive urges he hadn’t felt in a long time. He didn’t even notice the bottle of blood that was in his hands fall to the ground.

After what feels like forever yet not long enough, Scott reluctantly pulled away slightly. That’s when he hears footsteps behind him. He turns and sees Shelby walking into the living room, likely to see what Scott was talking about. She then sees Avid and freezes, tears forming in her eyes. She whispers, “Avid?”

He nods, and Shelby runs to them, hugging her fledgling tightly, sobbing. Avid hugs her back, and Scott smiles at the reunion. He’s surprised when Shelby unexpectedly hits Avid hard over the top of the head and says, “You idiot! You listened to Owen and Pyro, and that caused you to be dead for 200 years! We’ve mourned you, and now, you just show up on our doorstep without any warning?!”

Scott quickly pulls Shelby away and says, “Shel, calm down. Let’s just be happy he’s back.” Shelby huffs, clearly still mad. Problem for later. Scott turns to Avid and says, “Come in, Avid. Let’s get you cleaned up.”
