Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Fire Temple, 2011
Kai yelled in frustration. “Come on, why won’t my power unlock,” he screamed. “Kai, help me,” he heard someone shout desperately. He turned toward the sound. He saw Lloyd leaning on a side of a rock so as to not tip over into the lava. Kai hesitated. Why should he save the little brat, he wondered, when this was his fault in the first place!!

If Lloyd had never opened the Serpentine tombs in the first place, none of this would have happened. Besides, it’s not like the little brat had ever been nice to him and the rest of the ninja, even when they had taken him in. Especially when they had taken him in.

On the other hand, he was still just a kid and he likely hadn’t had any good role models before. Besides, Garmadon was intent on saving his son from the Serpentine, who had taken him prisoner, so things didn’t
bode well for him if Kai let Lloyd die. But the fangblade….He turned to face it. If he got the fangblade out of here, then the other ninja would finally see what he saw; that he was the Green Ninja. Plus, Pythor would be unable to release the Great Devourer, saving millions of people. Decision made, Kai picked up the fangblade and headed toward the exit.

But as he did, he caught a glimpse of Lloyd’s face and knew it would haunt him for years to come. He saw the entrance was blocked so he climbed to the top of the volcano and rushed to the Bounty as it was about to take off. Nya, Kai’s sister, pulled him up. “Kai, are you okay,” she asked as soon as she got the Bounty moving. He glanced down at his horribly singed gi and nodded. “Kai, what happened,” Nya asked now. Kai swallowed and explained, “As I was about to get the fangblade, I saw Lloyd. I tried to save him, but it was too late.”

The lie burned his throat. Just then, an explosion thundered close behind them, proving his statement. Everyone turned to look at Garmadon. He looked shocked and….was that heartbreak? “Lloyd’s gone? Just like that?” Jay questioned. “I guess so,” Cole said sadly. Garmadon suddenly spoke. “Curse you ninja. I’ll repay every injury you did to Lloyd. Especially you Kai. You ninja will lose everything that you dearly love if it’s the last thing I do,” he spat. Then Garmadon left. “You got the fangblade,” Zane asked. Kai looked down at his hand. He had forgotten about the fangblade with all the chaos going on. He was starting to wonder if he had made the right choice.

“Yeah, I did, didn’t I,” he replied. “That means since no one else was able to get one, you must be the Green Ninja.” Everyone gasped except for Sensei Wu, who had a far off look on his face. Kai frowned. Ever since he had heard about the prophecy, he had wanted to be the one, so why didn’t this feel right? He shook his head. He must just be overthinking this, right? He waited for the Golden Weapons to react around him as the ninja pulled them out. The Golden Weapons clattered to the floor.
