Work Text:

After a long day at the Tokyo training camp, things were finally winding down. Everyone had eaten, bathed, and were preparing to rest their tired muscles for one last day of training.

Or, that's how things should have been until the adults disappeared and the managers crashed the room, to many excited cheers and yells.

Even so, the ensuing festivities had been kept tame. Different groups had broken off into smaller ones to play smuggled cards, or charades, or other such party games.

As the night went on, too, some of the players drifted off towards their futons, giving in to their weary achiness. Others fell asleep where they played, unable to stay awake any longer.

Eventually, only the third years were left awake, and even they were starting to get a little delirious from lack of sleep.

It was this delirium that Kuroo would eventually blame the following events of the night on.

"We should play spin the bottle," someone—Kuroo never found out who—had suggested in a fit of giggles, a rogue water bottle being thrown into the middle of their roughly made circle.

There were only minor, half-hearted protests before the game got under way. And, despite the inequity in numbers between the boys and the girls playing, so far no one had any concerns with who the bottle had chosen.

In one memorable moment, Yaku had landed on the beautiful Karasuno manager who had flushed, but refused to be kissed, instead holding her hand out, resulting in something like a knight woo-ing a princess as he kissed her knuckles.

Kuroo was enjoying the different interactions around him until—

"My turn!" Bokuto exclaimed, immediately flinching when everyone hissed at him to be quiet so he didn't alert anyone. "Sorry, sorry," he laughed, thankfully at a much lower volume, and spun the bottle.

Kuroo watched it spin

and spin

and slow

coming to a stop to point at himself.

He felt a quick jolt of anticipation, or maybe anxiety, as he gave Bokuto his trademark cocky smirk.

Bokuto was matching his smirk with a mischievous grin of his own.

"Oi, Bokuto, you can spin again," someone suggested but Bokuto and Kuroo ignored them, watching each other, but making no immediate moves.

"Whatcha gonna do?" Kuroo taunted, ignoring the way his heart sped up.

Bokuto began to crawl across the circle towards him and came to a stop right in front of him. "Gonna kiss ya," he said seriously, still holding his gaze.

Kuroo met his fierce expression and waited.

And waited.

Bokuto kept staring at him; Kuroo stared back.

"Are you two gonna kiss or not, we don't have all night," Yaku snarled, snapping the tension between them, Bokuto and Kuroo both giving in to giggles. Kuroo felt the tightness in his stomach lessen. It was just Bokuto, there was nothing to be anxious about.

Then Bokuto leaned in, and gave him the barest hint of a kiss against his lips before pulling back, blushing lightly, smiling goofily in that way of his.

Before Kuroo could comment, or maybe pull him back, they heard movement in the hallway, signalling the return of the adults.

Quick and quiet as could be, the girls slipped away, back to their sleeping quarters, while the boys hunkered down in their futons.

Kuroo lay on his back, his fingers gently brushing his lips as he remembered the ghost of Bokuto's lips against his.

He kind of wanted to do it again. Maybe longer next time. And see more of Bokuto's smile.

He sighed and rolled over, noticing that his fellow captain was still awake, watching him.

Kuroo flushed as he realized that Bokuto would also enjoy doing it again.
