Work Text:
Asahi sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the name on his wrist. Bokuto Koutarou. For years the name had meant nothing and everything to him. He hadn't known who he was, but he'd known he would be someone important, and he'd had no idea if that was a good thing, or a bad one.
Thankfully, having finally met Bokuto, he had learned it was a good thing. The moment they had met and embraced, the endless chatter and voices of self-doubt silenced. He'd felt whole, like his soul was no longer split.
And then reality set in. Bokuto was essentially a stranger and they were hugging like they had known each other for years. Asahi pulled away, muttered an apology, and then left, leaving not just Bokuto, but his friends, too, behind, speechless.
Suga and Daichi, knowing Asahi well, had realized real quick that his anxiety was to blame. They'd gotten Bokuto's phone number and given it to him, but knew better than to give his out.
Unfortunately, Asahi hadn't quite worked up the nerve to text or to call him. Every time he thought about potentially sending a text, or worse, a phone call, he broke into a cold sweat, his hands started shaking, and that insistent voice in his head got louder.
He rubbed his hand over the mark on his wrist. He wasn't being fair to himself, or to Bokuto. He knew he needed to reach out, but how? Though, maybe if he waited, they'd see each other again at Nationals before he had to figure it out…
He shook his head. No, he wanted their next meeting to be on their terms, as equals, not because they were rivals on the volleyball court. He stood up with a new determination, striding out of the room only to come to a complete stop when he saw the mail sitting on the table where his parents had left it.
A letter in a pink envelope sat on top, clearly addressed to him.
He cautiously picked it up, before silently scolding himself. It wasn't going to explode. It was just a simple letter.
A pink letter.
Postmarked from Tokyo.
Asahi flushed as he opened it and saw the cutesy stationary sitting inside.
Volleyball is cool
Your spikes are way impressive
Hope to see you soon
Asahi read the haiku three times before letting out a laugh, wiping a tear from his eye. The poem hadn't been signed, but it didn't really need to be, did it?
Before he could think better of it, he pulled out his phone.
»Hi, Bokuto, this is Asahi
»Thank you for the letter! Your spikes are also impressive!
»Can I come see you in Tokyo this weekend?
«Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
