Work Text:

Joyfully striding through the apartment halls, Heizou carried a paper bag containing a small cheesecake that Kuni absolutely loved from that one café next to his workplace. Although Heizou said that he’d come a bit later, he just had to come early to surprise Scaramouche for their 3rd anniversary.

Heizou knocked on the door to their shared apartment with a smile he couldn't suppress, though it slowly fell after waiting for a few minutes now. He tried knocking a few more times, but no response. He had to take a step back to confirm that it actually was their apartment — which it was — before letting out a sigh. He specifically didn't want to just barge into their apartment, as he wanted to surprise his boyfriend; he tried calling Kuni many times too, resulting in nothing once more. Perplexed now, Heizou searched for the key to their apartment in his back pocket and decided to just go inside himself.

“Babe! I'm home early!” Heizou managed in a cheerful tone, despite his earlier slight frustration, but didn't find any soul in the living room… was Kuni not home?

Heizou set the paper bag on the coffee table and thought of the possibilities: Kuni could be sleeping, but he would've picked up the phone regardless. He could also be outside at the moment, but he would've told Heizou or again, just picked up the phone.

A growing lump of worry filled Heizou’s chest, but he tried looking on the bright side for now. He went to check Kuni’s bedroom, empty.

‘Kuni will just come back on his own, right?’ The thought echoed through Heizou’s mind as he walked to his own bedroom at the farthest corner of the apartment. Despite being together for three years now, they slept in separate bedrooms. Heizou would sometimes come over to Kuni’s room, though only occasionally.

He swung the door open without much of a care, but he felt the color leaving his face as he saw a sight that he wanted to eradicate from his memory. He felt his head light and words being stuck in his throat. Kuni…

Kuni was laying down on Heizou’s bed with another man above him. Wait- that's… Kazuha…? The two were in an obscene position, both naked; Kazuha teasing Kuni’s entrance with his length, each other's lips still connected but came to an abrupt stop when their eyes darted to Heizou.

Heizou had to take at least five whole seconds to process the sight that unfolded in front of him — his boyfriend was making out (almost made love if Heizou didn't come in to stop them) with his best friend. Then after the information had registered in his head, a mix of emotions boiled inside his veins: anger, jealousy, sadness, and betrayal. His gaze visibly darkened as he subconsciously clenched his fists. Then, a bitter expression took over his face and he choked out a scoff.

“Seriously? On our anniversary? In my bedroom?” Heizou glared at the two as coldly as he could, he could see a hint of shame on Kazuha’s face, but less on Kuni’s, and that irritated him even more.

Then, a sigh from Kuni filled the room, the kind of sigh you'd give your mom when she’d order you to do something stupid. He made almost no effort to push Kazuha away, but Kazuha himself retracted regardless.

“Hah… you weren't supposed to see this, Heizou. And plus, you took your damn time outside working. I just needed something, someone, to keep me company.” Kuni rolled his eyes, crossing his legs and didn't even make an effort to get properly dressed. Still no apology. Heizou knew that his boyfriend was quite an unfeeling person, thought that this relationship was an opposites attract type of love, but he was heavily mistaken by the evidence laying bare in front of his eyes.

He should've known better when Kuni was still going to those bars alone after they’d started dating from the very beginning. Now, he’d see Kuni in a new perspective. Love had blinded him for far too long, and the worst part? It was one-sided. His mind briefly flashed back to those faux affectionate moments — kisses too hungry, hugs too greedy. Heizou would be lying if he didn't enjoy the high of it, but he’d rather have something real rather than… this.

Heizou’s eyes darted to the Kazuha that avoided his eye contact, unlike Kuni, he quickly got dressed and kept his head down. Of course Heizou could sense that Kazuha was guilty, but the fact that he had agreed to this with Kuni, it filled him with a sense of betrayal that hurt more than the pain he felt for Kuni.

“Shut up, Kuni. I don't want to hear anything more from you. You're not even going to apologize, are you? Going to push the blame on me?” Heizou retorted with raw fury inside his chest, and he resisted the urge to completely break down in front of his arrogant boyfriend.

“Pathetic, aren't you? Already going to cry… Don't tell me you're getting worked up over this? Learn how to get over it.” Kuni’s harsh words pierced through Heizou’s frail heart, as he instinctively took a step back. The fact that Kuni had just disregarded his own boyfriend’s words made it much worse.

“Just stop…”

Heizou tore his gaze away from them, he felt his eyes stinging with burning hot tears. Don't blink, don’t you dare blink, Heizou. Though, his efforts were futile as he earned another cold chuckle from Kuni. He hated how the other was enjoying him being in pain and having his heart broken. He didn't even bat an eye as Kazuha got up and left in a hurry, he muttered a tiny ‘sorry’ before bolting straight for the front door to avoid whatever that was happening between the two.

“Even your best friend has left you, Heizou. You were just too blinded to see.” Heizou did want to see Kuni’s condescending smirk right now, and the single tear that dropped from his eye onto the floor indicated that Kuni was in full control.

“You're the fucking worse. Do you not feel any remorse at all? You unfeeling monster…” Heizou’s voice broke and cracked in the worst way possible, and he couldn't stand being here a second longer. He finally turned his heel and walked off without turning back.

“Oh, and for the record, I'm never coming back here again.” Did Heizou know where to go for the night? No. But his pride has taken too much of a hit today to be mocked even further.

As he walked out of the bedroom, he glanced one last time at the paper bag containing the cheesecake. That was definitely going to rot, and he hoped it did.
