Work Text:
He was always her favourite, secretly, although she was not supposed to have favourites.
It was what made his fall so much more difficult.
The threat of Hell had been, for now, squashed by the Morningstar’s daughter and her friends coming together with Emily, something that Sera had never envisioned happening in her eternal lifetime.
Sera had always, since the time of The Fall, thought of their two worlds separate, never able to coexist again, in fact Sera had tried to forget almost entirely about the Morningstar.
“It was his power wasn’t it?” Sera said clasping her hands in front of her.
In one of the most holiest rooms of Heaven stood Sera, her back to the large stained glass windows that reflected His eyes watching, In front of her sat Emily, Abel and Lute.
Sera had called them here as soon as Emily had recovered from her trip to Hell, she needed to discuss what they had witnessed in private before she took it to the higher Seraphim’s and, eventually, Archangels.
“It was.” Emily said nodding her head in confirmation. “I heard he was powerful but I didn’t think his power would destroy the gates of Heaven…”
“And the barrier!” Abel said a little too enthusiastically.
“His power was being used without his consent.” Sera said nodding, “we must remember this.”
“Did you know he was this powerful?” Emily asked looking up to her sister then glancing to Abel beside her. “When I saw him down there he looked a little…”
“Scary?” Abel said his eyes going wide “spooky?”
“No.” Emily mused raising a finger to her chin in thought while Lute rolled her eyes. “A little strange, but he seemed… happy? A normal angel?”
“Oh come on!” Lute cried throwing her arms into the air. “That’s the Morningstar you’re talking about, not some innocent saint! There’s a reason he’s down there Emily.”
“Do you think he’d try to come back up here?” Abel said folding his arms. “His power, he could, break through the gates and swan on in.”
“No.” Sera said shaking her head, “He made sure he cannot step foot in Heaven again. Besides, I don’t think The Morningstar would willingly want to return to the place that cast him out, would you?”
“Except for revenge.” Lute said narrowing her eyes.
“Revenge for what?” Abel asked turning to look at her, “Heaven has not harmed his family as per the agreement he agreed too.”
“If he finds out about Lilith.”
Emily’s eyes went wide as she turned from Lute to Sera then back again.
“What about her?” Emily said her voice rising, “isn’t she in Hell with him?”
“No.” Sera said folding her arms. “Lilith is somewhere else, somewhere that nobody except her, Adam, Eve and the Morningstar can go too.”
Emily’s eyes, if possible, grew even larger.
“She’s in the garden?”
“The garden.”
“I over heard you discussing the Morningstars.”
Sera’s back went straight as a voice descended from way above her, every Angel in the room lowered their eyes as from seemingly nowhere a golden glow filled the room.
“Speaker.” Sera said lowering her head as the Speaker of God descended before them. “You don’t miss anything.”
“That is my job.” The Speaker said smiling down at the group, Sera’s shoulders relaxed at her voice.
“Did you know about Lilith?” Emily said looking up at the Speaker, who nodded.
“I know all.” She replied calmly, “although your sister is right only those permitted can enter the Garden, even Charlie Morningstar as blood of those of the Garden would not be permitted to enter it.”
“Speaker.” Emily said stepping forward toward the golden being. “Do you think the Morningstar would use his power to come back here?”
“No.” She replied. “He cannot.” Her gaze turned almost wistful as she spoke. “It is his punishment.”
“You speak as if you miss him.” Lute spat causing Abel to glare at her.
“Is it a sin to miss an angel you saw grow?” The speaker said calmly “who you had to cast out of heaven?”
-
“It’ll be alright.” Lucifer said as quietly as he dared while in the presence of almost every Archangel in heaven. “The speaker is reasonable, she’ll see.”
Lucifer was sure that the Speaker would see his case, see sense, after all she had been nothing but kind to him since the day he had began to show her his creations. If there was someone in Heaven who believed in him, it would be her.
“We are here today to discuss the crimes of Samael.” The voice floated down from them up high in a golden stream of light, it filled Lucifer with a calming sensation from his toes to his head, he’d be okay. “Today, you tempted Eve in the Garden with the fruit of knowledge, you corrupted an innocent soul.”
Lucifer looked up at the angelic being before him, her eyes starring down at him into his soul and for the first time in his lifetime he saw nothing in her expression. No love, no hope, nothing.
“Speaker.” Lucifer began lifting his hands up.
“The council have decided your fate.” The Speaker said her head turning up toward a balcony behind her, Lucifer could pick out some of his brothers glowering down at him, and there in the front row was Sera her eyes filled with disgust.
“Do I not get to argue my case?” Lucifer cried turning back to the Speaker. “Surely He would not-“
“He has agreed to the punishment.” Speaker said and Lucifer’s mouth dropped open. “You are henceforth banished from Heaven, cast out, you will rule a new Kingdom opposite of this one, Hell.” The speaker’s eyes were fixed ever so slightly just left of Lucifer not actually looking at him. “You, Samael, will rule Hell alongside Lilith. You will no longer be allowed to step into the Kingdom Of Heaven.”
Lucifer felt his knees hit the floor of the court room.
“You will be stripped of your Heavenly name.” Sera said, Lucifer didn’t have the heart to look at her. “You will be be known as Lucifer of the Kingdom of Hell.”
“Can I just-“ Lucifer said looking up toward the Speaker.
“Our decision is final.” She said finally meeting his eyes. “Court dismissed.”
Lucifer didn’t move, he heard rather than saw the Angels leaving the room around him, he swore he heard Michael insulting him somewhere far above him.
“I just want a private moment alone with Sa-… Lucifer.” The Speaker was saying to Sera.
“Will you be okay alone with him?” Sera asked.
“Yes. He is no more powerful than he was yesterday.” Speaker said shooing Sera from the room.
Silence filled the court room for a few heartbeats.
“Lucifer.”
At first he didn’t even respond to the foreign name, slowly he looked up at the golden being before him.
“This brings me no joy…” She said gently.
“Then stop it.” Lucifer said finally meeting her eyes. “You know I’m not…”
“it is as He decreed.”
“As if that makes it final.” Lucifer scoffed knowing full well that it did mean that. “When do I leave then?” He sniffed.
“As soon as we’re done talking.” Speaker replied sadly, then suddenly Lucifer felt a warmth so familiar taking hold of his own hands as she grasped his hands between hers tightly. He looked up at her slowly staring at her.
“Listen to me.” She said her gentle voice washing over him. “Don’t stop dreaming, don’t stop creating, if anyone can make that place special, you can.”
“You don’t know that.” Lucifer said looking back down at their hands.
“I do.” She said squeezing slightly, “Everything you’ve shown me, show it to them, create it… do not stop your dreaming Samael.”
“Don’t call me that.” Lucifer hissed ripping his hands from her grasp rising from his knees to stare at her in the eyes. “It’s Lucifer now, right?”
She watched as he took a few steps back away from her, she had never seen Lucifer look at her with such fear and hatred in his eyes before.
“Go on then.” Lucifer hissed at her.
The Speaker was the one to actually watch them fall together, his eyes never left hers as he started to fall, and even now she could have swore that his eyes glowed a bright red as he began to fall.
“Good bye… Samael.” She whispered watching the almost blindly bright star shoot across the heavens.
-
The battle of Heaven and Hell had taken almost everything out of Lucifer, for a few hours afterwards he was worried he had lost his powers but it seemed that it had not left him yet.
Surprisingly it had been Alastor who had filled him in on the events of the battle, the pair of them had been greatly injured in the battle so seemed to need more time than most to recover.
“Who knew you had that in you!” Alastor had laughed grinning at him. Lucifer had to admit it was rather nice to have a familiar banter back after whatever that nightmare was.
But even he had to admit he didn’t know his power could break the actual golden gates of Heaven, he smirked as he wondered what Saint Peter’s reaction might have been to that little development. But his smile soon faded as he thought back to Her.
Cupping his hands together, he channeled his golden power into his palms focusing down at the golden shape he created before him. It slowly began to morph and shape into a swan like shape with large wings and feathers that appeared to turn into scrolls. It was messy, a hazy memory of golden light.
“What are you gawking at?” A familiar static voice echoed behind him, Lucifer wasn’t quick enough to squash the magic in his hands. “A duck?”
“Not exactly.” Lucifer said huffing a laugh. “Have you ever regretted your words to someone and it’s the last thing you say to them?” Lucifer looked up at the Radio Demon then shuck his head. “No, of course not.”
Alastor shrugged.
“Down here? No.” He laughed, “in my mortal life? Perhaps… Still.” He twirled his stick. “Is there no way for you to apologise to this person?”
“No.” Lucifer said.
“You’re the king of Hell.”
“And she’s the Speaker of God.” Lucifer said huffing squashing his hands together the magic dying. “I cannot step foot there again not for anything.”
Alastor hummed slightly then shrugged.
“Perhaps the best course would be to let it go.” He laughed. “Or show her she was wrong.”
“I doubt she’d even be watching.” Lucifer said sighing. “I’m sure she’s got much more important things in Heaven than watching me fight with a Radio Demon.”
“A fight I’m winning I may add!” Alastor said grinning.
“Why you cocky piece of shit!”
“And the Morningstar could enter The Garden?” Emily breathed.
“Yes.” The Speaker said her eyes twinkling. “The Garden is not of Heaven, Hell or Earth, it is but His creation, such a beautiful place… such a shame.” The speaker smiled down at Emily who was gazing at her with such awe.
“Let’s discuss this later.” Sera said, “tomorrow. A night of rest is in need before we do anything.”
Abel mumbled his agreement already shuffling toward the large church like doorway.
The Speaker turned toward the large stained glass windows that were in the shape of an all seeing eye, His eye.
Bringing her hands together a shimmery golden light filled her palms growing and growing until it was as large as she was almost like a golden shimmery mirror before her.
Slowly as if she was tuning in an old television the picture came into focus of her Morningstar.
Stood in a rather odd looking Hotel, with who she had learnt was the Radio Demon Alastor, both of them arguing silently gesturing wildly. She stopped a laugh as Lucifer threw what appeared to be a rubber duck at the Demon who cast dark shadows in his direction before a girl who looked strikingly similar to both Lilith and Lucifer appeared seemingly appealing for calm.
She smiled at the mess, the chaos…
She smiled at her Morningstar.
