Bully Talk

Summary:

Buford catches up with an old friend, but the conversation takes a turn that Buford will not tolerate.

Work Text:

“You should’ve seen the game last night, man!” Buford’s friend Spike exclaimed. “It was insane!”

Buford sipped his milkshake. “How’s the nerd?”

“Ugh, he’s gotten real uptight lately,” Spike groaned. “The other day, he wouldn’t let me copy his homework, and when I asked him why, he goes, ‘You know what you did.’”

“Oh man, I hate when they act like you’re a mind reader,” Buford replied sympathetically. He waved his empty milkshake at the counter. “Hey Jeremy! Top me off.”

As they sat watching shoppers pass by, Spike whistled. “Oh, man. I’d wedgie that.”

Buford’s brow clouded.

“Oh man, those overalls are killing me,” Spike laughed as the kid in question sat down at a food court table with a slice of pizza. “I can’t believe his mom lets him go out dressed like a complete dork. He’s totally asking for it.”

“What the heck is wrong with ya?” Buford snapped. “What are ya doin’ talkin’ about another nerd like that? Whaddaya think Eugene would say if he heard that?”

“Relax, dude, Eugene’s not here.” Spike rolled his eyes. “Besides, you know I’ve always dreamed of shoving an Asian kid in a locker.”

“That happens to be my nerd you’re talkin’ about,” Buford warned.

Spike’s face paled. “L-look, man, I didn't mean to—”

“I can't believe you, Spike,” Buford said disgustedly. “What makes ya think that's okay?”

“I didn't know that was your nerd!” Spike protested. “I would never—”

“What about your nerd?” Buford exclaimed. “What kind of bully d’ya think you're bein’ to Eugene right now? No wonder he won't letcha copy his homework. When's the last time ya made him feel humiliated? Have ya even told him he looks stupid lately? Huh?”

Spike sighed. “Buford, I’m sorry.”

“Don't apologize to me,” Buford replied. “Go talk to Eugene.”
