Work Text:

Macaque twisted and turned in his sleep. His clothed back scratched up against the rough bark of the peach tree.

Macaque lost balance and stumbled. His feet were swiped out from under him, the orange simian towered over him.

He tried to move away before pain shot through were his eye were was.

Macaque shot up, panting. His hand moved to his scared eye. He winced feeling the unglamoured scar. It took him a minute to realize he was shaking.

"Stupid dreams" He hissed to himself, he sat up the monkeys that were trying to lay on him scampered away to elsewhere. He blinked the tiredness out of his eyes unsuccessfully. He dragged his hands down his face and groaned.

Nightmares had plagued him ever since restoring the pillar, he hadn't told anyone about it but could tell Wukong was worried. Macaque was always tired and a bit more grumpy then usual. Specking of Wukong, Macaque strained his ears to see if the other simian was awake.

He couldn't hear anything from the others home and figured he was asleep. He thought a bit before deciding to steal some of the orange simian's snacks.

He hesitated before opening a shadow portal, it was a dark purple with a orange hue making Macaque wince. He stepped through it and was not in Wukong's house. His eyes shifted to Wukong who was passed out on the couch.

He quietly grabbed a unopen bag of peach chips from the coffee table. He turned his back to Wukong, his tail accidentally knocked a cup off the coffee table.

Macaque flinched at the loud noise and immediately whipped around to where Wukong was sleeping. His heart rate quickened as Wukong stirred but slowly settled when Wukong stilled. He released a breath he didn't know that he was holding, he turned back away from Wukong again.

Before he could make a portal he felt a hand grasp his shoulder.

"Stealing my stuff again, eh?" He heard that familiar voice. Macaque nearly had a heart attack, he let out a surprised yelped and immediately teleported away, leaving the bag of peach chips.

Macaque could feel his heart rate increase. He didn't know why but he needed to get as far away as possible. He couldn't breath, everything was too loud, the sound of snoring monkeys, footfall, the honks of horns from the city.

He backed up against a tree before sliding down to the ground, he didn't understand why he was panicking. What had triggered him so much? He tried to gasp for air.

Each pound of his heart felt like a lightning strike, his ears twitched at the noise. He tried to stop his trembling, to push down that uncomfortable feeling in his chest.

No matter how hard he breathed he couldn't get enough air. Was he being strangled?! He winced at the feeling of cold chills running down his back.

Was he dying? Why was he dying! He wasn't hurt! He couldn't be hurt! Why was he crying!

His thoughts consumed him. Then he was dragged out of them by a familiar voice.

"Macaque!"

He felt his panic heightened. He didn't want Wukong seeing him like this.

"Stay Away!" He tried to scream as loud as he could, he winced hearing his own voice. It was to feminine for comfort. He hated it, he hated it, he hated it so much!

"Woah, woah!" He heard that stupid voice say. He hated that damn orange simian! He hated how he was approaching! He hated the fact that he didn't hate him!

He wanted to scream, bite, scratch, tell Wukong where to shove it. He felt a hand hover near him, debating whether to touch him or not. Macaque couldn't help but flinch when Wukong sat down next to him.

Wukong stayed quiet but his presence alone seemed to make Macaque calm down. He hated it, he didn't want to be calm! Especially around Wukong.

Wukong hesitated before speaking, "Can I wrap my arm around you?" His voice was quiet with a hint of concern.

No "Sure" Macaque said hesitantly. He couldn't help but lean into Wukong's touch. Wukong was warm, he was soft, this was...nice.

They sat in silence. Macaque's breathing was slowly but surely starting to return to normal. He closed his eyes and leaned against Wukong. All six of his ears were out.

Macaque opened his eyes again and looked at Wukong. Damn that concerned look!

Wukong smiled softly, "You good?" He asked sheepishly. He tail flicked beside him.

"Honestly? Probably not" Macaque admitted. He didn't know why but he felt comfortable. Wukong was safe

Wukong's ears lowered and he gently rubbed Macaque's side, "What's going on?"

"I-I" Macaque stuttered, he ended up pressing his face into the orange simian's side. His muscles eased feeling a warm hand rubbing his back. Macaque shifted a bit, trying to find the right words to say.

What was he suppose to say? Hey Wukong I'm suddenly having nightmares about that time you killed me, funny huh?

Macaque shock his head, "Don't wanna talk about it" he murmured. He shifted slightly, pressing more into the ginger monkey's side.

Macaque watched as Wukong thumped his tail against the ground. Wukong pulled the darker monkey closer to him in an attempt to comfort.

"Maybe you can talk to Nezha about what's bothering you? You guys are close, right?" Wukong suggested.

Macaque looked up at Wukong, thinking about the suggestion. "Not right now" He finally said. He ignored Wukong's concerned look. He didn't want his pity.

Macaque hesitantly removed his glamours. Letting his six muti-colored go. He closed his eyes, listening to the sounds of the night. The crickets chirping, the occasional hoot of an owl, and the occasional sounds of snores from the city.

He flinched when Wukong had gently touched them. When the ginger monkey noticed the flinch and he immediately pulled away.

Macaque couldn't help but miss the touch. It was nice...he hadn't let anyone even see his six ears in a long time. He blamed the sleepy part of his brain for this but he grabbed Wukong's hand and pressed it against his ears, letting the other side of his head to lean against the others chest.

Macaque mentally groaned at the smile on the ginger simian that he could practically hear. "Shut up" He said after a moment.

"I'm not saying anything" Wukong replied smugly.

"You smirk is loud" Macaque retorted, nearly shrieking when Wukong nuzzled him.

Macaque covered his mouth letting out a squeak, his face heating up and turning as red as his mask.

"What was that?" Wukong teased, giggling.

"Shut up" Macaque squeaked furiously and bopped the ginger simian on the head.

Wukong was laughing loudly. Macaque didn't realize how much he missed that sound. It made him feel warm and fuzzy.

Macaque groaned before wrapping his arms around Wukong's neck. "Can you pleaseeee hush" He tried to ask as nicely he could. His voice cracked making him sound a bit feminine.

Wukong's face was completely red with blush, that was when Macaque realized how close they were, faces almost touching.

Macaque chirped embarrassedly and pulled away, only to immediately have two arms wrapped around him, bringing him back to the ginger fur of Wukong's chest. Wait, ginger fur!?

Macaque looked at Wukong, "Forgot you slept shirtless" He said snidely.

Wukong smiled sheepishly in response before adding, "What, enjoy the view?"

"Just send me back to the Diyu at this point" He groaned, shoving his face into Wukong's chest.

Wukong just laughed in response before finally settling down. The two stayed silent for several minutes.

"So uh, do you maybe want to climb a tree?" Wukong said breaking the silence.

Macaque gave him a look, "I thought you didn't like sleeping outside"

"I don't, but I wanna stay with you for the night" Wukong said nervously, "It that's fine with you." He added quickly.

Macaque thought about it for a few minutes before opening up a portal that dropped them on Wukong's bed. Macaque didn't waste anytime curling up beside a flustered Wukong, "It's gonna rain soon" He said halfheartedly.

Wukong quickly recollected himself before laying next to Macaque, fidgeting.

Macaque sighed, "You can cuddle me, y'know" he added hesitantly.

Wukong quickly wrapped an arm around the smaller ebony monkey, bringing him closer.

"If you insist" He said teasingly.
