Work Text:
Corvus has probably the jumpiest body guard in the world. Everyone who works for him tends to be jumpy about his safety, however you were the only one assigned as his body guard. Really, he doesn't need one. He can handle things himself for the most part, and when he can't he sends the cleaners out to handle it.
You, however? Insisted until the sun went down on your first day to be his body guard. Then the next day too, right when he'd woken up. You were right outside his door, begging again to be his body guard.
Of course, this made him suspicious. Why are you so desperate for this position? Why do you want to be so close to him all the time? What's it all for? You aren't even a giver, how can you be so adamant you can ever protect him?
He notes the soft red tint to your cheeks, however, and figures out exactly what's going on quickly. You seem to have taken an interest in him romantically. How cute.
Corvus decides to humour your little crush, and by mid day you're officially assigned as his ‘body guard’.
He likely would have accepted you into the position even if your crush hadn't been so obvious. It'd be a good way to keep an eye on you. Even now, having you work as his body guard, he can see it's good for him to keep an eye on you. You do tend to be quite rambunctious and jumpy about everything.
Corvus can already tell the one who will be doing all the guarding will likely not be you.
Oddly enough, he's okay with this.
He feels a pull to protect you as you do for him.
~~~~~~
Today the Hell Guard has shown up. Likely to prod about the new spherite, Rudo. You quite like Rudo, and you think Corvus does too. He can be kind of hard for you to read sometimes, but he hasn't had any complaints about Rudo yet, so you figure he at least doesn't dislike him. Not that the man complains all that often, but if he didn't trust Rudo, he'd have told you by now.
You aren't really sure why he tells you who he doesn't trust only to not let you go after them. What's even the point? Why let you know if you cant do anything? It drives you crazy.
He tried to explain it to you a few times. He tells you so you know who to have your guard up around, but it doesn't click well in your head. If they're a problem, why are we keeping them? Corvus never explains that part to you.
At the moment you are completely on edge–maybe even half way dangling off the edge–due to the Hell Guard being at the base today.
You'd never seen them before, but watching Semiu and Corvus talk about them scared you half to death. Not often do you see Semiu look even slightly distressed.
Corvus, however, was as calm as always. Something you've always admired about the man. You suppose it's why he's in charge around here.
Being able to keep a cool head in a hot situation is something you think you could never do. Yet, here you are. Corvus asking you to do that exact thing you have no talent in.
The two of you are alone in his office. He's sitting in his fancy office chair, and you're standing at the opposite side of the table. He looks up at you with soft eyes.
For how dense you can be at times, you are able to note he's sitting when speaking with you so you don't feel threatened. He'd started doing it after he'd once made you so uncomfortable you were shaking.
Fear is a look he never wants to see on your face again, if he can help it.
Today, however, he knows he cannot help it. The Hell Guard will show up regardless of if he wants them to or not. It's quite frustrating to him, but he has no say in the matter.
“All I need from you, is for you to stay calm. As threatening as the Hell Guard can be, they likely won't attack us in my office.” Corvus speaks calmly, keeping his eyes trained on your own to verify how you're feeling.
You remain still, staring him right back in the eyes. You feel your body shaking, and see his calm expression shift slightly into one of concern. You know what he's going to say. He's going to tell you you don't have to be there. Tell you to go join Enjin in keeping an eye on Rudo and the other kids. Tell you you're doing perfectly fine, and he understands.
You don't let him speak, mustering up as much courage as you can find.
“I can do that.” You barely spit the words out, your body beginning to mimic a leaf in a wind storm.
Corvus looks completely unconvinced, prompting you to nervously smile at him. This does not help you in the slightest.
“It's alright, you don't have to push yourself if you don't feel-” he's quickly cut off by your voice.
“Please let me! Let me try! Please please please-” you begin to please and beg with him to stay.
Corvus lightly takes one of your hands in his,“Okay! Please, though, if you feel too uncomfortable, don't be afraid to leave. This will be tense.”
You feel his thumb gently rubbing across the back of your hand. You let out a shaky sigh, “Yes, sir.”
You nod at him, with a nervous, yet thankful smile on your face.
Then you finally fully process that his hand is on yours. He's holding your hand. Oh my god. Corvus is holding your hand.
You feel your whole face heat up, and you can no longer look at the man sitting in front of you.
You hear him chuckle softly, “I've told you before, you can just call me Corvus. No need for all the formality.”
You feel as though you are going to explode from embarrassment, “Sorry- sir- Corvus- I- helpmeohmygod-”
He applies gentle pressure to your hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze before letting go. He stands up slowly as you not scare you off, making his way around his desk to stand right in front of you. He softly lays a hand on your shoulder to re-collect your attention. You nearly scream in response, but turn your head to make eye contact with the taller man.
“It's alright. Call me whatever you'd like.” His voice is soft, much like the look in his eyes.
His eyes almost always look gentle with everyone, but soft? That's a look for only you. Not that you're confident enough to say for sure you've noticed that.
He begins to speak again, “I'll feel much safer having you at the meeting. Thank you for agreeing to be there.”
He squeezes your shoulder slightly before walking away to the door. You quickly follow behind him, as you always do.
You can't tell if Corvus himself actually feels safer because you'll be there, or if he was implying he feels you'll be safer being within his eye line. Either way, you feel helpful. If Corvus wants you there, then there you shall be.
As for Corvus? He was most definitely indirectly implying he feels after being able to see you, rather than having you running around without him. He's grown quite fond of you in recent times. He finds himself getting a bit nervous when you're gone for too long, and a bit excited when you return to your place beside him in his office.
He truly just asked you to stay with him for this meeting in case things go sideways. As much as it would be dangerous being in the same room as the Hell Guard, it's no secret you're his soft spot. An easily exploitable individual he cares deeply for. The closer you are to him, the easier it will be for him to protect you.
Corvus doesn't believe you to be entirely incapable of saving yourself, however you're likely a lost cause if you try to fight anyone from the Hell Guard. You seem to be unable to fight trash beasts entirely. Your skills are more people related. Against the cleaners you tend to lose sparring matches, but you hold out for a decent amount of time on pure will-power.
You also notably always had a tendency to react quickly to perceived physical threats. Which ranges from helpful, to you hitting people who don't deserve it. Usually Riyo due to you being unable to hear her coming. She never seems to give you more of a warning though, so perhaps she sees it as a fun game.
It comforts him greatly that you can likely defend yourself long enough for him to come save you, or for him to send someone to. However, when it comes to the Hell Guard, he wouldn't be scared as much time. If they truly wanted something from him, they'd take you as hostage. He will not be risking you being alone today.
Corvus makes his way to the front entrance of the base where Semiu's desk is placed, and where the Hell Guard are likely impatiently waiting. You follow behind him quickly, doing your best to keep up with the taller man. Something he always finds cute, and something you always find a bit annoying. Can't he slow down just once while walking? You suppose not. Not today at least.
Finally the two of you make it to the foyer to see the Hell Guard. You notice the red hair immediately, and freeze up behind Corvus. Kyouka Nijiku. Zanka's sister if you'd remembered correctly. She's far scarier than he is though.
Corvus keeps his eyes on Kyouka, though takes note that you're freezing up. He subtly signals Semiu to your situation, and she reacts quickly, yet calmly. She walks over behind Corvus and moves you slightly to the side of him. Now you look like you're supposed to be there rather than just following Corvus around.
This doesn't exactly help you much, but Kyouka is no longer staring holes into your boss trying to see what's hidden behind him. He eyes observe you momentarily before Corvus quickly moves everyone along, back in the direction of his office.
Once again, you follow behind him swiftly, Semiu now beside you. The two of you acting as the only wall between Corvus and the Hell Guard. Semiu gives you a gentle look, reassuring you with only her eyes that you'll be okay. You feel slight relief wash over you for a few seconds before finally making it to Corvus’ office.
His office. It's a room you often find comfort in. You go there when upset, or scared, or for anything really. You tell Corvus everything you see, hear, and think. He's always there, always happy to listen to you, even when you make no sense. Even at night, sometimes you'll go in just to sit down and relax yourself. Even when he's not physically there, his scent is, and that's enough to comfort you.
He'd once found you asleep in his chair in the early morning. You'd fallen asleep on one of your nightly adventures into his room. He didn't wake you. He allowed you to believe you'd gotten away with it for another night. He'd called you into his office later that day, not saying anything of what he'd seen, but gifting you a key to his office, and permission to enter even when he's not there. He also told you you're welcome to find him in his personal quarters if you feel it'd help you.
You'd name that as the best day of your life. Being given personal permission to be so close with him, not just physically, but emotionally. It also further cemented in your mind that you cannot tell Corvus about your feelings for him, in fear you'll ruin the current close relationship.
Corvus was mildly disappointed that day that you hadn't picked up on such an obvious hint that he feels the same way.
You find yourself playing with the key in your pocket as a nervous tick when you all enter into Corvus’ office. You stay close to Semiu, knowing you can't cling to Corvus during the meeting.
Before sitting down Corvus gives you one last reassuring look, a soft smile for only you to see, before switching back to a more serious demeanor, and placing himself in his chair across from Kyouka. Kyouka also swiftly takes her place across from your boss. You notice her glare at you briefly before bringing her attention back to Corvus. You feel a chill run down your spine in response.
Throughout the meeting you're barely holding it together. Shaking. Sweating. Just doing your best to not pass out every time Kyouka opens her mouth. You always feel momentary comfort at Corvus' calm tone though, holding onto it to help ground yourself in reality.
Eventually the grueling meeting ends, and the Hell Guard–and that scary woman–take their leave. You feel all your tensed muscles relax, and nearly collapse in relief. You feel Semiu softly rest a hand against your back for a moment to steady you before Corvus comes over.
He makes his way straight to you, standing at a small distance in front of you, his eyes trained on your face, seeing the sweaty distressed state you'd just come out of. He politely asks Semiu to leave, and she does after giving you a slight rub against your back as a subtle ‘see, you're okay’.
After he hears the door click closed, he brings a gentle hand to your cheek, holding your face softly.
“You did amazing. Thank you.” He speaks kindly, praising your bravery.
You happily lean into the touch of his warm hand against your face, as you feel his thumb brush away something wet on your face. Tears. You must have started crying at some point. Hopefully after the Hell Guard left.
“Of course. It's my job.” You nervously mutter out, trying to wipe away any remaining tears.
He smiles softly at you, leaning down to press a soft kiss to your forehead. You feel your entire body freeze as you look up at him confused. He lets out a soft chuckle, his thumb rubbing comforting against your cheek once again.
“You really did amazing, my love.” He speaks against the top of your head as he pulls you into a gentle embrace, his hand once on your cheek now resting against the back of your head. His other hand lightly placed against your back. Both loose enough you can leave if you so choose.
You feel as though you're going to die from joy.
“I- you- what??” You stammer out, more confused than you'd ever been before.
Corvus lets out a heartier laugh, before calming himself, presenting a loving smile to you, “Ah, you never quite notice my hints. I do notice how you feel though. I feel the same way.”
You stand there in his arms, frozen for a moment. You feel him tense slightly, seemingly worried now was not the time, or that he'd somehow misinterpreted your behaviour.
You smile bigger than he's ever seen before at him. Your face is one full of a joy only he gets to see. You wrap your arms around his torso, pulling him even closer than he already was, pressing your cheek against his solid chest. He does the same, making his hold on you a bit tighter, pulling you closer.
All you can manage to say in your excitement is a little, “yay!”, which earns another soft chuckle out of him, along with another soft look.
“I'm glad you're safe, my love.” Corvus speaks softly.
You respond cheerfully, “You too! I totally did my job so well- hehe!”
You're slightly losing it, finally knowing he feels the same, and he's perfectly okay with it. He'll hold you the whole way through your excitement, and likely until you ask him to let go.
“I love you.” He mutters against the top of your head.
You feel yourself nearly pass out from the pure excitement of hearing those words from him–from Corvus–he loves you!
You quickly return the words with more outward excitement and joy than even you'd anticipated, “I love you too, Corvus!!”
Outside the door a soft snicker can be heard from Semiu. She'd been listening in on the romantic moment the whole time.
You don't seem to notice, but Corvus gives Semiu a look from over your head. He receives a bit of a cheeky smirk from her in return as she closes the door, the soft click of the door closing being heard again, soon accompanied by her heels as she walks down the hall.
Corvus returns to admiring you in his arms, and you remain unaware that you'd both been watched the whole time.
He was right, he really will have to guard you.
He has no qualms with that.
