Work Text:

For H.: I think I’m going insane, please enjoy I’m begging you I haven’t slept in 9 years

I don’t understand what Caine is getting at right now. He basically told us that he didn’t want to use the suggestion box, yet he took my only suggestion and made it into an adventure. He took it verbatim, too. I have no idea what got him to do this.

My suggestion was to have a fair, since when I was growing up, there was one every year in my hometown.

Caine was talking about the adventure, but I couldn’t listen. I was basically vibrating with excitement. Everyone else seemed to notice, since they were looking at me with this weird expression.

“Um, are you… okay?” Pomni asked in a hushed voice, as to not interrupt Caine’s instructions. I looked at her with the biggest smile my face could muster and nodded.

“Okay? I’m more than okay! I’m fantastic!!” I grinned, bouncing in place. Pomni stared at me, likely trying to process everything, and turned her head back towards Caine.

“Alright everyone! It’s showtime! And remember: stick with at least one other person. We don’t want anyone getting lost!” Caine exclaimed, snapping as a portal emerged. “Have fun everyone!” He waved us off as we walked through the portal. I looked back and mouthed words of gratitude, to which he tipped his hat at. I took a deep breath in, and walked through the portal.

As I emerged from the portal, it closed behind me. Everyone else had already entered through it, so nobody could have been left behind.

The fair was near identical to the one from my hometown. Every ride that I adored was there, even the ones that got axed a few years ago. Everything was there. I grinned wide and squealed with excitement.

“Okay everyone! Let’s group up!” Ragatha clapped once, and everyone went to their preferred partner. Gangle and Zooble already walked off, seemingly to the carnival games. I watched everyone for a bit, listening to the conversations.

“Oh! Pomni, do you wanna group up with me?” Ragatha asked, reaching her hand out. “We can go with Kinger, too!” I watched Pomni as she looked at Jax, trying to make her decision. Before Pomni to respond, Jax spoke up.

“Hey, go with her. We can team up next time.” Jax put his arms behind his head as he stepped back, which was weirdly empathetic of him.

“Uh, sure! C’mon, let’s go get Kinger!” Pomni smiled, and she looked towards Kinger, who had already managed to wander away. One of the rides had bugs painted on it, so he was navigating towards it. The girls walked over to Kinger, and they all went to the ride.

That just left Jax and I. He looked at me, pupils dilated, and he grinned. “Welp, guess it’s just the two of us left, newbie.” He walked over to me and patted me on the back. “So, where do you wanna go? Judging by your face, you know the layout better than I do.” He stated, which got me to flush a bit.

“Let’s go to that one!” I pointed, it was a red and yellow ride that made you spin. It was called the “Twist and Furl,” a near identical version of the one from my hometown. Jax stared at it, likely weighing the pros and cons of the ride, before shrugging and walking towards it.

“Any particular reason?” He asked me as we got into the ride. I looked at him, smiling sadly.

“A friend of mine from outside the circus loves this one. I wish she was here, she’d definitely be on this one 24/7.” I spoke with a fondness that wasn’t in my voice before. It truly made me realize how much I missed life before the circus.

Jax looked at me, and before he could say anything, the ride began. Jax screamed loudly, while I laughed loudly. The ride is on a slope, so the spins the ride had us do were fast, then slow once more.

Jax was holding onto me for dear life, clearly not enjoying the ride to the same degree that I was, but I didn’t care. I was having fun, and right now, that’s all that matters to me.

Any other instance of contact and I would be flustered as hell and blushing so much that red would just become my signature colour, but now? I didn’t care. It was nice, yeah, but it wasn’t what I was focusing on.

As the ride slowly came to a halt, both of us were panting, but for different reasons. Jax was out of breath and somewhat terrified. I, however, was out of breath from screaming out of pure, unbridled joy.

“Okay. That? That was a thrill ride. That was awful.” Jax said, pointing at the ride. I just got up and offered a hand to help him get up.

“That was nothing. This was a baby ride.” I laughed, patting him on the back as I walked away. Jax stared for a bit, before shaking his head and running after me.

We were now on a spinning spaceship ride. Gangle and Zooble were on it with us, so they were on the complete opposite side of the ride. I couldn’t get a good look at them, but I think Zooble was holding onto Gangle’s happy mask.

“What now…” Jax groaned as he leaned up against the wall of the ride. Zooble rolled their eyes.

“Do you not know what’s gonna happen?” They asked.

“No? This one didn’t tell me anything.” Jax retorted, pointing his thumb at me. I was standing straight, leaning against the wall.

“If I told you, I wouldn’t have gotten you on here.” I said, pouting and turning my head away from him. Jax groaned.

“Tell me now, then! I can’t get out, so I can’t leave!” He yelled, but I kept my head facing away from him.

“It spins.” I said, quickly looking back at him. Jax stared, and before he could say anything, the ride started.

It started at a slow speed, but quickly ramped up the pace. I grinned widely as we were all pressed up against the wall. Gangle was almost completely flat against the wall, but she did have an arm wrapped around Zooble, who was holding onto the mask for dear life.

Jax stared at me, an angry expression clear on his face, but, again, I didn’t care. As the ride got faster, I decided to move to be more horizontal. Everyone stared at me as I shimmied my body to change my orientation.

“What are you doing?!” Gangle yelled, tears on her mask barely hanging on.

“Making it more fun!” I yelled back, shimmying a bit more. Seeing this, Zooble moved their body to be diagonal on the wall while still being close enough for Gangle to hold onto them. Jax groaned.

“Do you guys HAVE to be so lovey-dovey?!” He yelled, which led Zooble to flip him off for a second, before going back to holding onto the mask.

The ride began to slow, and I began shifting back into a vertical position, with Zooble following my lead. Jax grumbled, putting a hand over his mouth. “Oh my god I’m gonna be sick.” He muttered, gagging slightly after all of the motion.

The ride finally stopped, and I was laughing loudly at the situation. “That was hardly anything!” I said between bouts of laughter. Jax just rolled his eyes at my reaction, and I could have sworn I saw red dusted onto his cheeks.

“Well, we’re gonna go to another ride. See ya.” Zooble said, handing the happy mask back over to Gangle, who quickly put it back on.

“Bye guys!” Gangle smiled and waved as she and Zooble walked off to another attraction of the fair.

“So. Any other rides you wanna go on? Preferably without as much motion.” Jax asked, gagging a bit still. I thought for a moment, before nodding.

Me and Jax both sat in different bumper cars, waiting for the attraction to begin. Kinger, Ragatha, and Pomni joined us not too long ago, and they piled into their cars. Ragatha sat alone, while Pomni and Kinger buddied up. “Be ready to get owned!” I yelled out to everyone, Kinger giving me a thumbs up in response. Jax rolled his eyes, resting his head on his hand.

“Bold of you to assume I’ll lose.” He muttered loud enough for me to hear.

“Good luck Pomni!” Ragatha cheered, which Pomni smiled at. Kinger stared off into the distance, zoned out. It was starting to get dark out, so maybe his eyes were just readjusting to the darkness?

The bumper cars roared loudly, signalling the beginning of the game. I pushed down on the pedal, and aimed towards Ragatha, since she was opposite me. Before I could hit her, Jax rammed into me. I looked at him, and just smiled. Jax didn’t seem to expect this reaction, so he turned away, seemingly embarrassed.

I quickly turned my wheel, getting out of my predicament, and drove away as fast as the carts allowed me. I went into a corner, trying to assess the situation, and I was surprised to see Kinger holding court pretty damn well. Pomni was gripping onto the sides of the car, screaming loudly. I maneuvered my car out of the corner, just to get hit by Ragatha.

“Sorry!” She shouted, which I waved her off and gave a thumbs up. She smiled, before backing up to hit somebody else. I turned my sights towards Kinger and Pomni, and bee-lined it straight towards them. But before I could hit them, Kinger swerved out of the way, making me hit Jax who was conveniently hidden behind them.

“$#\t!” I yelled, the censor blocking out most of my curse word, save for the last consonant. Jax stared at me, his jaw unhinged so he could do his maniacal laugh he sometimes does. I laughed as well, before getting rammed into by Ragatha, who caught some of our laughter.

Right before the ride stopped moving, I looked and saw Kinger heading straight towards us all at top speed, with Pomni holding on for dear life. We all clashed, with me falling slightly out of my car.

The ride fully came to a halt, and I groaned. Kinger got out of the car and walked away. “Wow! That was exciting! Don’t you agree, Pomni?” He asked, hand raised to his head. Pomni, however, did not respond. She groaned in the car.

“Here, let me help you out.” Ragatha smiled, getting out and giving Pomni a hand, before they walked away.

“Bye guys!” Pomni called out to me and Jax, both of us still in our cars. After a pause, I spoke

“We got owned.” Jax looked at me, then snorted a bit as he laughed.

“We really did.” He wiped a fake tear from his eye, before leaning forward on his car. “We might have time for one more ride. Mind if I choose it?” He asked, to which I smiled.

“Go ahead. The floor is yours!” I giggled.

I don’t know why Jax chose this ride, but GOD he must be messing with me.

We were on the Ferris wheel, it moving at a snails pace. We sat opposite each other, with me looking away, face feeling hotter than ever. Looking down, the fair truly looked near identical to the one from my home town. Sure, there were a few things that were different, but everything was inherently the same.

“So. D’you have fun?” Jax asked, breaking the ice. I snapped out of my weird daze, before nodding.

“It was awesome. I don’t know how I could ever thank Caine for doing this.” I sighed longingly. Yeah, it was basically the fair I know, but it wasn’t. It just made me feel a bit homesick. I missed my friends, my family, and my home. Jax seemed to notice the shift in my mood, so he sighed and snapped his fingers in my face.

“Listen up. Yeah, it sucks that we’re stuck here. But we’ve just gotta stick to our guns and we’ll be fine.” He held his arm up as if he were showing off his muscles. I smiled a bit, but it dropped not long after. Jax’s gaze softened, and he moved to sit next to me, which made me confused.

“Jax?” I asked, looking up at him. He seemed to hesitate, pupils narrowing a bit, before he moved a hand on my waist, and another to cup my face. “Jax, wha- what the hell? What are you doing?” I flushed, but Jax didn’t stop. He leaned down, and he kissed me.

It was a weird sensation. I’d never kissed anybody with this body, but it oddly felt right when I kissed Jax. I sighed into the kiss, exhaling through where my nose would be, which had more implications than I was willing to process, so I just let it go.

Jax couldn’t really open his mouth, but it didn’t matter. I swiped my tongue across his teeth, earning myself a shudder from him. In response, he grabbed at my @$$ a bit, making me jump. I could feel the gondolas shake a little from our movement, but god I didn’t care. All that mattered in this moment was Jax, and Jax alone.

We finally pulled away from each other. While we didn’t need to breathe, I felt as though I was gonna die without taking an artificial deep breath of air.

“God… that was awesome.” I said between gasps. Jax smiled smugly, elbowing me.

“Damn right it was! I’m skilled at this.” He exaggerated his movement, making me laugh. I looked down, and we were at the top of the Ferris wheel the entire time we were kissing, and we only just started to move again.

“So, uh, have you ever kissed anybody in this body?” I asked, scooting a bit closer to him. He shrugged, wrapping an arm around me.

“Nope. Guess you’d be my first, then.” He said, pupils dilating ever so slightly. I nodded, leaning my head on his shoulder.

“I wish we could stay in this adventure forever.” I sighed, looking down on the fair. “Maybe we can convince Caine to do a rerun at some point?” I looked up at Jax, who laughed a bit.

“Maybe. It’d probably be a lightning round.” He chuckled, which I shrugged in response to it. I leaned up and kissed him on the cheek, getting him to flush.

“Once the adventures done, wanna hang out in my room?” I asked, which he raised a brow at. I blushed. “Not like that! I meant, just, hanging out. Like a normal person. Not sex!” I groaned, punching him softly. Jax cackled loudly.

“I knew what you meant the moment you said it, don’t worry darlin’. And, yeah, I’d love to join you in your room tonight. No sex.” He chuckled, raising a pinky finger for me to take, which I did with my own, sealing the deal.

“Sounds good.” I smiled, and leaned against his shoulder again, where we stayed for the remainder of the ride.

Before we got to the bottom, I paused, heart skipping a beat. Did he just call me darling?!
