Work Text:
I stared up at the sky, amazed by how realistic the sky seemed. After everything that happened during today’s adventure, I was more than happy to sit and watch the sky. Moon and Sun were having a conversation with each other that I couldn’t hear, but it seemed like they were passionate about the topic.
I still haven’t fully adjusted to the life of the Circus. Not having to eat is weird, and sleep not being mandatory is very confusing, so I’ve been sleeping through most nights. From what I’ve heard, everyone seems to stay awake throughout the night, making me an outcast of sorts. But I don’t mind. Any routine or sense of normality is helping me stay sane.
I heard a horn blare in the distance, Caine’s voice emitting from it. “ATTENTION ALL HUMANS. IT IS TIME TO RETURN TO YOUR ROOMS. BE OUT AGAIN BY 9AM SHARP!” His voice rang out. I just stayed put. Caine seemed to have a soft spot for me, meaning that I could get away with more than most other people within the Circus.
I sighed. “I should head to my room.” I spoke to nobody in particular. Stretching, I stood up, looking around one last time before bidding the outside farewell.
The trek inside always is the hardest. The Circus is so impossibly big that it could probably take hours to get from one spot to another if you don’t know where you’re going. Fortunately for me, I started to understand the floor plan better as the days passed. Turning a corner, I paused slightly at the sight of the person before me.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the newbie!” Jax grinned widely, his iconic smile the same as ever. “Heading to bed a little late. We being bad?” Jax walked closer, poking my forehead lightly.
“What do you mean ‘we’?” I asked, brushing his hand away. Jax grinned, pupils dilating.
“I’m staying out late, too. So we’re workin’ together!” Jax put an arm around my shoulders. I felt my face heat up at the idea of us hanging out all night, just the two of us. Alone.
“Hey. Listen up.” Jax waved his hand in my face, snapping me out of my daze. I blinked, shaking my head and looking back up at him. He was much taller than me, my neck straining just to make some semblance of eye contact. “Where do you wanna go? I’ve got keys everywhere.”
“Everywhere?” I repeated, him nodding and pulling out a ring of keys from seemingly nowhere. I stared for a bit, then I got an idea. “How about your room?” As I spoke, his eyes narrowed, pupils contracting ever so slightly.
“Nah, my room’s borin’. Nothing good or interesting to do in there. Pick again.” He leaned back, dangling the key ring in front of my face. Each key, though near identical, had words on them; names of players and places, along with a serial number. I reached out and grabbed my key, which seemed newer in comparison to the others. While the elements don’t seem to affect things as they would in the real world, the metal seemed to get some wear and tear.
“We can just go to my room if you want.” I shrugged, hoping my face didn’t change in hue. If anybody touched my face they’d think I’m sick, though I’m not sure if sickness can actually be caught here. I took a mental note, wanting to ask Caine about it the next time I saw him.
“Sure. I’m easy.” Jax replied, stretching and walking towards my door. I trotted on behind him, smiling to myself. As Jax kneeled down to use the key, I stopped him.
“It’s okay. It unlocks with my touch, right?” I moved to stand in front of him, hand hovering right above the door handle. Jax nodded.
“Yep. The keys are just a formality for me.” His grin widened substantially. As I turned back to face the door, I felt his eyes on me, staring daggers into my soul. I took a deep breath, then opened up the door to my room.
It wasn’t much, but it was cozy. There was a bed on the farthest wall, and the room always glowed a bit. It had lights dancing around, always just out of sight, and the lights strangely didn’t actually emit light. They seemed almost like floating JPEGs, but I could never get a good enough look to know whether or not they actually were.
Jax whistled. “Wow. This is pretty sweet.” He smiled widely, getting a running start and flopping onto my bed. I giggled, joining him on my bed. We sat in silence for a while, none of us seemingly wanting to break it.
“So, um. How’s it going?” I asked, feeling my face get hot. Jax just shrugged.
“Goin’ good. Glad to be able to rest up.” He stretched, which made me pause.
“What do you mean by ‘rest up’?” I tilted my head. Jax laughed, loud and boisterous. He reached a hand onto my shoulder, still laughing.
“I’m stayin’ here! Like a sleepover.” He continued to laugh, pausing only briefly to do a voice for his most recent sentence. I stared, then felt my eyes widen and goosebumps form on my arms.
“Oh! Okay! I think.” I tried to play it cool, but was ultimately failing. I’m sure Jax could tell I was nervous. So, he just laid down on top of the covers, gesturing for me to lay down next to him. I did so, but instead opted to go under the blankets, hoping that if I seemed warm, he’d mistake my blush for something to do with my body temperature or something.
We sat in silence for a bit, and I thought I could hear Jax snoring. It was hard to tell. My heart was racing so much that I could hear it in my ears. I noticed Jax stirring in his sleep, so I hesitantly drew shapes on his arm, hoping that would keep him calm. To be honest, it was mainly for my own sanity. Before I could even blink, Jax moved.
“Wow, bein’ pretty handsy, are we?” He put a hand onto mine, and I screamed. Jax put his other hand onto my mouth. “Careful! Don’t want people hearing us.”
As I processed everything he had said and done, I had to process even more as his lips, or teeth, landed onto mine. It was weird, since I’d:
a) never kissed anybody in this body, and
b) never had anyone kiss me with their teeth,
but I made it work.
When we both finally pulled away, we were panting. “Dear lord. That was so… cool…” I said between gasps. I know I don’t need to breathe, but god I needed something to keep me anchored to the moment.
“What can I say? I’m good at these things.” Jax shrugged, and mimed bringing a cigarette to his lips. I giggled, high from the adrenaline. Jax seemed to notice, and I don’t think I could have ever imagined what he would tell me next:
“Wanna go again?” He asked.
“Yes.” I gasped, and just like that, our hands were all over each other, and our mouths covered each other.
And then we did the sexy sexy sex but with clothes on and no parts but also yeah. We didn’t sleep.
THE END
