Work Text:
The wind was picking up, making Enid’s hair fly each and every way and blinding her for a second before she hurriedly pulled it out of the way. She needed all of her senses sharp at the moment. She was currently strategically out on the balcony of her and Wednesday’s bedroom, eyes trained on the inside as she tried to track her prey. Well, not exactly prey when she was the one running from it but still. She glanced longingly at her unmade bed where her phone definitely was somewhere under the mess of plushies and blankets. She really needed to pee, and was seriously considering yelling like a banshee until somebody heard her.
“Come on, Enid! Pull it together!” she whispered to herself. “It's just a mouse.”
She managed a couple steps closer towards the windows but a sudden noise got her scrambling backwards again. It wasn't just a mouse, it was the biggest rat she had ever seen, the size of a dog easily, and she was kind of terrified of it. She knew it was stupid, she was a freaking werewolf! And yet there she was, stuck on the balcony, without a jacket on a windy afternoon, needing to use the bathroom and without her phone.
Enid looked around again, as if something or someone would just pop out of thin air to help her. Her mind was a jumble of thoughts, getting more and more anxious as the minutes passed and there was no sign of the rat. She just knew she wouldn't be able to sleep without knowing where it was but also didn't want to ever see it again if she could help it.
She almost fell on her ass when the door to the room was shoved open unceremoniously, her beautiful girlfriend, Wednesday, walking in quickly followed by Thing.
“OMG! Wednesday! I’m so happy to see you!”
“Hello to you too,” Wednesday said, a slight frown on her face as she noticed where Enid was.
“What you doing outside?” Thing signed, climbing onto Enid’s bed.
“There's a Rat! A fucking huge rat in the room!!”
Wednesday was calmly putting her bag in its proper place. She turned around just as calmly and stared at Enid like she had just said the sky was blue. “Of course there is.”
Enid almost screamed as it dawned on her this wasn't news to her girlfriend, which meant all of this could've been avoided.
“What do you mean, of course? There's not supposed to be any rats in here! Just one Seer, one werewolf, and one disembodied hand! No rats!” As much as she tried, her voice had gotten a little louder on the last words, her frustration and anxiety making it hard to keep a level head.
“I'm conducting an experiment that requires me to observe this specimen. It must've escaped its cage, which is quite impressive.”
Out of the corner of her eye Enid saw Thing quietly jumping down towards his little house, clearly sensing the tension rising.
“Wednesday! For fuck’s sake!” Enid pushed her hair out of her face angrily. “We've talked about this! I thought we agreed on no secret experiments in our room after last time!”
It had taken her months to stop smelling rotting corpses whenever she entered the room. Wednesday’s face was as impassive as ever but by now Enid was basically an expert in reading her and could see the softening of her shoulders and the slight apologetic look in her eyes.
“Apologies, Enid. I was planning on taking it outside tonight, didn't expect it to manage to escape its cage.”
“We can talk about it after you catch it and take it far away from here so I can come inside! It's freezing and I really need to pee!”
“As you often remind me, you have claws. Why are you even hiding outside in the cold?”
“It's a huge rat! I don't want to get bitten, okay?” Enid tried her best to cross her legs, praying to a god she didn't believe in that she wasn't about to pee her pants. That would be so embarrassing. “Now, hurry up! Please!
She couldn't prove it but she was sure Wednesday had rolled her eyes at her before turning around to crouch and look under her bed. Thing came out of his house and scuttled right by Wednesday without being prompted. Enid was torn between watching them and backing up against the balcony until they said it was safe and ended up just standing there, listening to the noises. It felt like hours, but was actually just a couple minutes, before Thing was jumping outside signing that it was okay and Wednesday had caught it. Enid didn't even glance in the direction of her girlfriend, just ran towards the bathroom as fast as she could. They were having some words as soon as she didn't feel like her bladder was going to explode.
“Is it safe yet?” she asked, poking her head around the door. Now that she had a chance to go to the bathroom and calm down a little, all she wanted was to lay down in bed for a bit. Preferably while cuddling her girlfriend if Wednesday felt like it. She might still be kinda mad but not enough to forgo cuddles.
“It was always safe, Enid.”
“You know what I mean!”
“Yes. Thing is currently dropping the specimen in a more suitable location for my studies.”
“Oh, thank god!”
Enid didn't waste any time closing the small distance from the door to her bed and falling face first onto it. Her head hit something hard and she winced before fishing out her phone from under the covers. She unlocked it automatically, seeing the many unread messages and notifications. It was almost enough to distract her and she fumbled around to look at Wednesday.
“Wait! You're not off the hook yet!”
Wednesday had sat down on her perfectly made bed and was just opening her aunt’s grimoire, but raised her head to look at Enid at her words.
“I'm still mad that you let a gigantic rat loose in our room and scared me half to death!”
“It was hardly ‘gigantic’ and I didn't let it loose, it got out of its cage.”
“Whatever! It's still your fault!’ Enid did her best pouty face.
Wednesday put the book aside and got up, walking slowly towards Enid’s side of the room. “Fine. And what will be my punishment, cara mia?”
Enid almost swooned at the pet name, as she did every time Wednesday said it. It was such a thrill to be the only one she allowed herself to be soft with.
“I want cuddles.” She knew she could get something harder than that but the whole ordeal had left her pretty tired to come up with anything more.
“Of course.” Wednesday took Enid’s hand and pressed a gentle cool kiss to the back of it. “I’ll go take more of my allergy medication.”
Enid grinned to herself, hugging one of her plushies to her chest as she watched her girlfriend take her meds just so they could cuddle in Enid’s colorful bed. It was a lot more comfortable than Wednesdays, that's for sure. She kept forgetting to buy at least one black blanket just for moments like this, so medicine it was.
“You should grab your book so you can read while I catch up on my socials.”
Wednesday nodded and got her book. They quickly settled in with Enid curled up against Wednesday’s chest. She sighed contently when her girlfriend started to gently comb her hair with her fingers. She might drive Enid crazy sometimes but it was part of her charm. She wouldn't trade her for the world. Crazy experiments and all.
