Summary
“Will we keep in touch?” Enid quietly asks, breaths coming out in soft puffs that Wednesday can feel against her face. “When I finally escape this town and go to San Francisco, will we still be friends?”
“Of course,” Wednesday tells her, and the lie curls itself around her throat until she is drowning, suffocating, and cannot breathe.

Summary
Enid nudges forward, a mere smudge, a minute gesture to pull Wednesday away from the ditch she was trying to bury herself in. There’s no doubt that a single look at her would scream her up-most desire for Wednesday to speak. To be vulnerable. She desperately wishes that Wednesday would just look at her for one second, but all she does is stare at the fire, deathly still.
“Please don’t shut me out, Wednesday.”
“I’m not.” She mutters back, quietly. It's unusual.
“Then talk to me.”
“It’s not like this with other people,” Wednesday confesses under her breath, timid as if she was betraying herself. She finally looks at Enid as if she's seeing her for the first time since she sat down beside her. “If I say this, will you leave me be?”
Just as Enid and Wednesday began to grow closer, tiny, vague confessions in the middle of the night are left unspoken between them, and Wednesday suddenly distances herself from Enid without another word. But when they go to Camp Jericho, Enid finally gets the chance to talk to Wednesday without anyone to see or anyone to hear, in the isolation of a forest, a fire, and fidgety fingers.
