Summary
After two years of living in the post-apocalyptic world, Corinne had made peace with solitude. She learned to survive by staying on the move – never lingering in one place or around the same people long enough to form attachments. Losing her loved ones once was enough; she refuses to risk that kind of pain again.
Daryl was built the same way, though through years of abuse during his adolescence. He was convinced that he thrived better on his own, unburdened with responsibility to any other life than his own. It took him years to eventually let people in, and even now it’s in small, gradual ways. He’s stuck with his group from the start, and they’ve become his reason to keep going.
He saw the same potential in Corinne. Daryl sees it in her soft smiles and natural warmth, recognizing a goodness in her he doesn’t see in himself. Corinne is a better person than he’ll ever claim to be, so if he, out of all people, can find room for love in a broken world like this, he’s certain she can too. And he’s determined to help her get there.
