Chapter Text
Elphaba was lying on the grass, enjoying a rare moment of peace.
The kitten —a tiny black fluffball with an odd green shimmer— slept curled beside her, purring softly.
Fiyero approached quietly.
—Mind if I join you?
—As long as you don’t wake my cat —she said, knowing perfectly well he would somehow wake him just by existing.
He sat next to her, stretching his legs.
Elphaba glanced at him. Something in him felt… different. Focused.
—You’re awfully quiet —she teased.
—Just thinking.
—Well, that explains everything.
He nudged her shoulder playfully, and she rolled her eyes with a smile.
For a moment, there was only the breeze, the purring, and their breathing.
Then Fiyero inched closer.
And closer.
Elphaba felt her pulse accelerate but didn’t pull away.
—Elphaba… —he whispered.
She lifted her gaze just as he tilted his head. Their lips were inches apart.
She closed her eyes, leaning in—
And then:
“MIAU!”
The kitten sprang up, puffed like a furious little storm cloud, launching himself right between them.
Fiyero suddenly found himself holding an angry cat instead of kissing a beautiful witch.
The kitten hissed right in his face.
Not meowed—hissed. Like a tiny, offended dragon.
Elphaba rubbed her temples.
—You’ve got to be kidding me.
—I think… —Fiyero struggled not to laugh— your cat doesn’t want me to kiss you.
Another hiss.
The kitten agreed.
Elphaba was not amused.
—Well, that’s too bad.
Fiyero held the feline at arm’s length.
—Hey, little guy, it’s just a harmless kis—
“MIAU!”
The kitten swiped his paw, aiming for Fiyero’s cheek.
—He’s jealous —Fiyero laughed.
—I noticed.
She stood up, determination flashing in her eyes.
—Give me the cat.
He handed him over.
Elphaba held the kitten close, staring him down.
—Listen carefully. I like him. And if I want to kiss him, you are not stopping me.
The kitten blinked.
Once.
Then gave a soft, disgruntled meow as if saying: I absolutely disagree.
—Too late —Elphaba smirked.
She placed the kitten on the ground, turned to Fiyero, grabbed him by the collar, and kissed him —slowly, confidently, with all the intensity she had been holding back.
Fiyero melted into the kiss, cupping her cheek, smiling into it.
Behind them—
“MIIIAAAAUUU!”
The kitten ran in circles, outraged, scandalized beyond measure, even attempting to climb Fiyero’s cloak to interrupt them.
But this time the kiss wasn’t breaking.
When they separated, foreheads touching, Fiyero couldn’t stop laughing.
—Your cat hates me.
—He’ll get used to it —she whispered, kissing him again.
The kitten sat beside them, tail flicking angrily, accepting —with great suffering— that he had officially lost.
