Symmetra—no, now Satya entered her apartment, removing her regulated Vishkar visor with a sigh from the released stress of the day. She stood in the foyer as she removed her heels, setting them on the rack by the door.
As she walked further into the living room, a faint sizzling noise reached her ears. Initially, she ignored it, but as she walked further into the room, it became more apparent, and her heart lurched in realization to what it actually was.
It cannot be. She knows—
In a mad dash, she frantically ran over to the kitchen. There on the stove, she saw the smoke rise and—
And there was Sombra, completely at ease as she flipped what appeared to be a grilled cheese in the skillet.
With a hum of acknowledgment, she greeted Satya calmly while never taking her eyes away from her soon-to-be meal. “Hola, mi favorita arquitecta.”
Satya blinked once.
Twice.
And then thrice.
She could not believe her eyes. Surely this is some fever dream.
The fact that her beloved, yet chaotic, girlfriend was calmly cooking in the kitchen, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, was throwing her off. Sombra, the woman who could burn water as easily as she could infiltrate governmental systems, was in the kitchen humming to herself as she cooked effortlessly, as if she belonged.
This would be a relieving sight to Satya the moment her heart rate returned to a normal pace. Until then, she was suspicious. She furrowed her brow, her expression morphing from shocked to interrogative. “You're cooking.”
Sombra gave a nod. “Sí.”
“Using the stove.”
“Mmhmm.”
“Unsupervised.”
This made Sombra chuckle. “Believe it or not.”
“And nothing is close to being destroyed.”
“First time for everything.”
Leaning against the kitchen entryway, Satya was still not satisfied. “Explain yourself.”
This caught her attention as Sombra finally looked into her eyes. “You wouldn't believe me if I told you.”
Satya was quiet for a moment before replying. “I will be the one to decide upon that.”
With a roll of her eyes, Sombra looked back to the skillet as she began to flip her grilled cheese again. “It's dumb, but I was scrolling on Twitter earlier, and I came across this tweet."
“And what did the post entail?”
Sombra flushed at this. “....it said, and I quote, um…. ‘young hoes cook everything on high’.”
Satya could not contain herself as she fought to suppress the wobble of her lips before she gave a soft snort and gave in, laughing.
Sombra continued, her voice trying to hide her amusement. “It's not funny, it's dumb! I'll have you know that both me and the meals I've tried making in the past took great offense to that post…however, maybe I did try making a grilled cheese on medium heat instead of ‘hot as hell’ just to see what all the hype was about…” She shifted her eyes left and right before continuing, voice significantly lower as she admitted defeat. “And maybe it is coming out quite nicely or whatever.”
This only sent Satya into another round of giggles as Sombra now joined in too.
“Ay! Don't laugh at me; fuck you too, Saty.” Despite her words, Sombra's tone was playful as she gave a toothy smile while she plated the grilled cheese.
Reaching for the butter and knife, she carefully sliced a piece from the stick to melt down in the skillet to prepare for the next sandwich. “I just saw the post initially and was like ‘fuck this guy.’ Then I looked at the comments and saw that everyone else was sharing their own experiences about how they didn't wanna wait and how their food always came out nasty. I wanted to be pissed because how lazy and impatient can you be? Unfortunately, I couldn't get too annoyed because that's me. I can't even cook in my own damn kitchen without being supervised.” She raised a hand in exasperation. “So naturally I decided to test it out, and here I am, finally cooking something edible without burning the place down.”
Satya's lips still wore the hint of a smile as she walked closer. Noticing the butter was melted, she put her arms on Sombra's waist, but not before she placed the second sandwich on the skillet. “Well, you are learning, and I am proud of that. However, one: you are 32, and two: you are not a ‘hoe.’”
Lips dancing into a smirk, Sombra kept her eyes glued onto the grilled cheese as she settled in Satya’s arms. “You know just what to say to make me feel good, yet remain humbled, princesa.”
Satya kissed her cheek as she watched the sandwich, her head peering over Sombra's shoulder. “Always. I'm just glad you're finally understanding how the kitchen works.”
Smirking at this, Sombra looked back at Satya. “Yeah, and before you know it, I'll surprise you with breakfast in bed.”
Satya could only raise an eyebrow as she spoke in an unamused tone. “Let's not push it.”
Both laughing at this, they continued to admire Sombra's handiwork as she flipped the sandwich with her newfound concentration and culinary awareness.
