   Summary

There is a child, and he spends most of his days wandering.

Once, and only once, he allows a group to take him, drawn by their kind eyes and soft words and some itching of his skin that he hoped they might fix. Time reveals that to be a misguided thought, born of an uneducated mind. The child emerges, having gained a few things: A hatred for liars, a gas mask, a bag full of bubbling liquids in shiny bottles, and the discovery that pain – both dealt and received – can soothe that infernal itch.

He does as all children do, and he tests that.
