Work Text:

Clover was excited, really excited to be seeing their friends again. God it had been so long he really did miss Chara and Frisk. Clover wrote to Chara often and they would talk with Frisk, but they were busy with the dreemurr family, politics and all that fancy rubbish. Frisk had been swamped after deciding to become the ambassador, for some reason Sans was playing a big part in it. They missed them both, so, so much, the laughs, smiles and quiet moments.

The air was warm, it was nice birds were singing, bees were buzzing. The grand oaks standing tall leaves bristling in the winds. Chara and Frisk where walking towards the camping grounds at Ebbit, it was early in the summer so it should just be them three at the site, wouldn't be too surprising if a few monsters wandered in, a lot of them had built cabins in the woods after all, wanted to be close to the underground.

In the distance Frisk saw a figure walking down the dusty road, they were wearing a duster jacket billowing in the wind, a plain white shirt on and light blue jeans, most importantly though they wore a cowboy hat.

“CLOVER!!!” Frisk yelled out, using up more energy than they had in all of the meetings with the human delegates They ran towards Clover, throwing themselves in the human's arms, leading them to both plummet to the ground.

“Damn partner, warn a guy next time, Jesus.” Frisk pulls themselves up off of Clover, once standing they reach a hand down to help pull the cowpow up, Clover takes the hand. Clover dusts themselves off and as they look up they catch a pair of bright red eyes and a familiar warmth fills their chest. Chara walks towards the pair with a small smile on their face and delightment in their eyes at the pairs shenanigans. Toriel was right, they thought, this was far from a waste of time. Chara missed the three of them together like this.

“Chara, Frisk how you both been? Busy I imagine"

“Oh you have no idea Cowboy? Who knew being the ambassador of monster kind would be so hard.”

“I did Frisk, why I never signed up.”

“Oh shut it Chara.”

They bickered like this until they reached the camp site, talking about all sorts of nonsense and whatever random thing appeared in their head. By the time they reached the site the sun was hanging low in the sky, sure they could have got there earlier but they saw a really cool rock.

The spot was about midway up the mountain on a large ledge looking over the vast woodland.the view was breathtaking in the distance you could see the ocean churning away its crystal water shining, reflexing the setting sun's beams. The dense wood lands disperse, leading into vast fields.

“You can see all of Ebbit from here.” Clover muttered under their breath looking over the vast expanse before them.

“Yeah it's beautiful, it almost reminds me of when the barrier fell.” Frisk said, walking up to Clover and leaning on them.

“Makes one think, doesn't it, the natural beauty of the world.”

“It does, yeah.”

They sit down near the edge of that clif for a few moments all huddled up together, hands interlaced. Frisk is stretched out over Clover lap while Chara is gently playing with hair with Clover leans on them, it's nice, peaceful.

They can't stay like this forever despite how appealing it may be. Chara gets up and grabs the duffel bag that Sans of all people had packed for them last night. Chara pulls out the tent Sans packed, opening it up on the side they could see the words ‘Snow place warm like a tent’ in bold letters running across it, got a chuckle out of Frisk.

“Honeslt pretty funny, Probably just had it  pn hand to be fa-” As Chara was saying this they reached into the bag a fart sound came from it. “... Seems he did throw a prank in.”

“Maybe even Sans finest piece of work yet.” Frisk said trying to hold in a laugh.

Clover was dying in the corner.

“You both are so immature, Angels why do I love you both?”

“Becauseeee… where funny and cute.”

“Not a good enough reason Frisk.”

Clover looks over to Chara and Frisk, when they said Love that tone of voice, it was something that ran deeper wasn’t it. Maybe tonight’s not the night to ask though.

“Anyway, guys, let's set up camp, we're gonna be out here for a while.”

“Good shout, let’s get to work!”

Clover's tent had to be discarded, it broke when Frisk ran into them, luckily the tent from Sans was more than big enough to fit all three. After they set the tents the sun had almost completely set, it was peaking out from under the horizon. As the light ran low the shadows were cutting deeper and the moon glow washed over land, the view from that cliff side it almost looked like there was a harsh line cut through the land, the golden glow of the sun retreating as darkness took hold, pretty.

Clover was setting up the camp fire with Frisk, they had sent the ambassador off to grab wood for them. Chara emerged from the tent, they had changed into their pajamas, an old plain white t-shirt and a pair of shorts.

“Going to bed already, Butter cup.”

“No Clover, just thought I would get comfortable.”

“Fair enough then.”

Chara goes and takes a seat next to Clover, they talk about nothing in particular, just whatever washes over their mind. A few minutes pass and Frisk comes back with the fire wood, Clover takes it and sets them up in the ring of rocks they created prior, within a few minutes they had breathed life into the flame.

Once Clover was done setting this up Frisk decided it was around Clover's turn to get changed.

“Clover, go get changed, me and Chara can take care of the fire ok.”

“OH! Thanks Frisk.”

Clover grabs their bag and retreats into the tent. Frisk looks over to Chara who is pocking at the flame with a stick, knees tight to their chest.

“Sooo, Chara, have you thought about my proposal yet?”

Chara gazes at frisk from the corner of their eye. “Frisk I'm not so sure about this, this is the first time in months we've seen Clover in person, if that cowpow did feel something for us, it's properly faded.”

“But you remember what Tori said, ‘Distance makes the heart grow fonder’ and have you been looking at Clover, Angels above when he realised his tent was busted and had to share with us, that look was so cute, Chara you just have to trust me.”

Chara turns fully facing Frisk, they let out a deep sigh and fall back on the ground. “Fine, we do it together, tonight, at the camp fire, deal”

“Deal.” A small smile appears on Frisk's face as they say this.

“Love you Chara.”

“Love you to Frisk.”

The Sun had fully set at this point, the three of them were huddled around the camp fire making s'mores. Clover was sandwiched between them both, resting their head on Frisk's shoulder, it was pretty nice they thought. The sound of the wind and the glow of the moon illuminating the night sky, with stars shimmering and the warm and light of the fire being the only true thing tethering them to the world, if it went out Chara, Clover thought that well, darkness would consume them once more.

“Hey Clover, can me and Frisk talk to you about something?”

“Oh? Of course." Clover's voice was light as they said this, interest dripping from it.

“Clover.” Frisk started “Me and Chara are… simplest way to put it in a relationship and w-”

“OH! Congrats, I'm happy for you, do you want me to move so you lot can sit together?”

Clover's voice was tense, they were rushing, felt awkward like they were maybe intruding on a night they maybe shouldn't have been apart of,(despite how glad they were to be their) Clover thought back throughout the day, all those little moments, the walk here how close they were to each other, the hushed conversation they were having while Clover was in the tent. When Chara said Love while unpacking the bags. Clover was beginning to panic a little.

Chara and Frisk grab Clover pulling them back down, the s’mores discarded on the ground beside them.

“Angels above Clover! No, we want you sitting right in between us, if we didn't we would have sat next to each other." Chara flicked clover head and grab their hand, they gave Frisk a look that said well carry on.

“As I was saying Clover, me and Chara like you scratch that we loveee you silly, and we were wondering if you loved us too?”

Clover was silent, they looked upon the fire, its flames dancing, intertwining with one another, the life they had all breathed into it. Being dead degrades one's memories. Whatever life they lived on the surface was long forgotten, nothing but phantom pains remained. With Martlet, Starlo, Ceroba hell, even Dalv, they had all breathed new life into Clover, raising the child from the broken fragments Flowey Resets left and trying to help them, no matter their motives.

The time in the underground with Frisk and Chara, the flame hungrily eating up the oxygen around it, they had been reminded what it meant to be human, and then their revival. Clover wasn't sure what love meant, but a phantom pain told them this was it.

“I do, Gods I think I do.”

Frisk pulls Clover into a side hug, and Chara reaches there hand over and interlaces it with Clover.

They're warm in the tent all huddled up together, for tonight this is good.
