Reminiscing the Past

Summary:

YuuMika Day 6: Family

"You seem distracted...is something wrong?"

"Ah, that...it's nothing. I was just thinking."

Yuu's eyebrows crinkled in confusion. "Thinking?"

Mika nodded. "About...about the past."

"The war?"

He shook his head. "Before that. Back when we lived in the orphanage."

Even the best of us need to release our emotions sometimes. Mika thinks of the fate of his first real family.

Notes:

Hi. First of all, I'm super sorry for how late this is. (it's nearly 10:00 pm...yikes, cutting it close) I also apologize for the super short length. And I'm sorry that I somehow managed to turn a day full of happy fluffy prompts into...this.
So, um...without further ado, I hope it's not too bad...?

Work Text:

"Mika? What's wrong?"

Mika was standing on their balcony. He did that a lot, claiming that the view and breeze made him relax, but for some reason he seemed more unfocused than usual.

The two lived together, having moved into their house soon after the war ended. They were technically still part of the army, so they didn’t live too far from the base, but the location was isolated enough that they could enjoy uninterrupted peace.

The startled jump Mika gave when Yuu approached him and touched his shoulder was troubling. He may have been turned back into a human soon after the vampires’ surrender, but his senses were still slightly heightened from his time as a vampire. It was usually impossible to surprise him.

"Mika?"

Mika turned towards Yuu, meeting his eyes.

"Yuu-chan. Did you need something?"

"No, I just noticed you standing out here. You seem distracted...is something wrong?"

"Ah, that...it's nothing. I was just thinking."

Yuu's eyebrows crinkled in confusion. "Thinking?"

Mika nodded. "About...about the past."

"The war?"

He shook his head. "Before that. Back when we lived in the orphanage."

Yuu's eyes widened, before he took Mika's hand in his. "Mika..."

Mika shook his head again. "It's not... It's not anything bad. I'm just...remembering."

He turned around, once again facing away from Yuu. His head raised, looking up at the starry night sky.

The two stood in silence.

"That was our first real family, wasn't it?"

Mika continued, not giving Yuu time to respond.

"Our first family...Yuu-chan and I, and all the kids." He looked at Yuu. "Our first real family, and we lost them to the vampires."

Yuu's eyes softened. "Mika-"

"It nearly broke me. I was forced to be the same type of thing that killed our family. If Yuu-chan hadn't survived that day...if Yuu-chan hadn't made it out, I wouldn't be here. Yuu-chan is the only reason I bothered to live those next four years."

Yuu pulled him to his chest, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Don't say that, Mika. Don't think of it, don't say it. I survived. I'm here, and so are you. And even if... Even if I hadn't made it out, the last thing I would've wanted was for you to let yourself die!"

He could feel the hot sting of tears behind his eyes, and saw Mika's watering too.

"We made it out. We're here." Yuu whispered softly.

"Do you remember, Mika? That dream we shared back then...living on the countryside together, running an orphanage. We can do that now. We can do anything we want. You'll never be alone again, I promise you'll always have a family from now on. You have me."

He cupped Mika's face gently in his hands, pressing quick, light kisses to his forehead, cheeks, nose, lips, before looking him in the eye.

"You have me, Mika. You've have me now, and you have me forever. I'll always be here for you."

Mika stared at him for a few seconds more, before closing his eyes and nodding. He leaned his head against Yuu's chest, wetting it as he finally released his emotions.

Yuu stroked his hair comfortingly, tears sliding down his cheeks too.

"Thank you, Yuu-chan."
