Chapter 1: intruder

Chapter Text

A normal person, upon hearing successive loud crashing noises outside of their apartment door, might have called the police. Maybe barricaded their door with some furniture just in case. It wasn’t like your neighbourhood was particularly prone to break-ins, but it surely wouldn’t hurt to be extra cautious.

In your situation, you did none of those things. You knew exactly who it was that had showed up at such an ungodly hour. The digital clock sitting on your kitchen bench blinked at you mockingly: 2:03AM. There was only one person in your life who would appear at this time, and it was—

“Gen,” you complained, tugging your front door open, “Can you shut the hell up? I’m gonna get another noise complaint from my neighbour.” Contrasting the dark of your apartment, the dim lighting of the hallway took a little bit of getting used to. Rubbing your eyes, your blurred vision finally cleared to reveal First Division Captain Narumi Gen standing at your door.

By the looks of it, he must have just gotten off work moments ago, given the guts and blood that he was covered in, staining the pink strands of his hair a dismal shade of dark red. His irises were still bright with Kaiju No. 1’s geometric retinas, glowing from the battle. He must have crashed through the balcony directly to your front door rather than taking the lift like a regular person, since, with a quick inspection of the hallway, there was no blood trail leading up to your door. Thank fuck. You had no idea what kind of bad gossip that would draw to your apartment.

As your eyes trailed over him, you finally noticed his massive double-bladed bayonet, slung over his shoulder casually and still dripping with what was undoubtedly kaiju innards.

“And put that away,” you snapped, “You’re going to get me arrested.”

“Baby,” he drawled, stretching out the last syllable in a way that made you roll your eyes, “They wouldn’t arrest you. You’re First Division Captain Narumi Gen’s girlfriend.”

When he swooped forward for a kiss, you dodged it with a scoff. He pouted, but you glared pointedly at his ginormous weapon. Finally, shoulders sagging in a dramatic, defeated sigh, he started to fold up the blade. Even then, you still stood in the doorway with your arms crossed, blocking him from entering until the bayonet was retracted into its compact, box-like form.

“Alright,” you said at last, stepping aside to finally let him inside, “Acceptable.”

Narumi trailed inside your apartment like a lost puppy, setting his massive weapon by the shoe rack before following you inside. You eyed the blood and guts that he was trailing in and said, “Shower. Now.”

Like a well-trained, obedient boyfriend, Narumi didn’t need to be told twice. He was heading to your bathroom without a word as you went into the kitchen to warm up some of your dinner leftovers for him to eat.

You hummed as you heard the shower switch on, and by the time Narumi was done, you were scrolling on your phone at the dining table, his food set up on the seat opposite to your own. Your TikTok feed was filled with clips from the fight that Narumi must have just been involved in—it looked to be a massive kaiju that had appeared only a few blocks away, and you appreciated the quick updates from the various First Division fan pages.

You supposed if you were a bit more alert, you might have felt the impacts of the battle rattle through your building, but you had been too distracted by your nightly bed-rot to notice that sort of thing.

The food you’d prepared was just some of your leftover rice and curry, but Narumi’s eyes lit up when he saw it anyway.

“You’re the best, baby,” he moaned as he dug in dramatically. You rolled your eyes affectionately at his antics, taking his towel from where he’d left it on the table and reaching over the table to dry his hair. He cooperated well, tilting his head whichever way you directed to help you reach the wet spots.

Once you were satisfied with your work, you sat back and let yourself watch Narumi eat. He was undoubtedly an extremely hot man, and you weren’t ashamed to admit that it was one of the reasons why you’d agreed to go out with him at first. You still found yourself feeling a little bit distracted by his arms and broad shoulders, currently damp from his shower. He’d slipped on one of his spare shirts that he kept at your apartment, but it was thin and old and left little to the imagination. You appreciated it.

“How was work today?” He asked you, setting his chopsticks down into his empty bowl a few minutes later. His eyes were duller now, returned to their normal colour, and he leaned forward to gaze at you as if you were the most precious person in the world.

You groaned as you recalled your day, “Soooo tiring, Gen. The emergency department was so packed I wanted to leave the moment I got there. So many kids showing up with horrible coughs. It’s flu season, you know, so everyone’s catching something these days.”

You were a junior doctor currently in the process of completing your emergency department rotation as part of your training. It was a field you were quite interested in specialising in, especially because you knew the emergency rooms in these areas often received patients who had kaiju-attack-related injuries—your specialty. Narumi gave you plenty of practice dealing with those too, which helped.

Narumi hummed, eyes still fixed on you so intensely that it made you flush a little bit, despite yourself, “You’re a hard worker, baby.” His expression suddenly seemed to darken as he added, “Can’t believe it’s possible for someone as perfect as you to be related to bowl-cut fuckass vice-captain.”

Gen,” you scolded with a muffled laugh, which only made Narumi grumble more. Yes—being Soushirou’s younger sister was another reason why you were so interested in working in the emergency department. Your older brother had his fair share of kaiju-related injuries, and with him now being the vice-captain, you wanted to be somebody that could also help his officers and division out.

Obviously, Soushirou didn’t know about your relationship with Narumi Gen, well-known to be one of his rivals and someone he definitely didn’t get along with…

You wouldn’t want to know what your brother would do to you if he found out. He’d probably have your head on a katana. And then slit Narumi’s throat in his sleep.

“It’s true!” Narumi groaned, his tone sounding very salty, and it only made you laugh more, “He was involved tonight, too, you know. Wouldn’t stop stealing my kills. Tell him to stay in his territory, in his own lane. Stick to fighting little kaijus…” his grumbling trailed off as he buried his face in his hands, and you leaned over to ruffle his already-messy hair.

“Poor you,” you said offhandedly before getting up from your chair with a yawn, “I’m going to sleep.”

Narumi pouted up at you, hanging onto your arm so that you couldn’t leave, “My girlfriend doesn’t even care about me.”

You snorted and shook off his grip, “You’ll be alright.”

“You didn’t even deny it!”

“Wash your dishes before you come to bed, Gen.” With that, you turned on your heel and returned to your bedroom. You heard Narumi’s forehead hit the table in defeat behind you, and you giggled at the image.

It didn’t take long for you to feel the mattress dip at your side as Narumi slipped into bed with you. Narumi spent most of his time at Headquarters. He lived at the First Division base, after all, so it was rare for him to stay over with you. It was why moments like these were deeply treasured by you, as irritating as Narumi could be at times.

At least he was funny. You loved him for a reason, after all.

He hummed as he tucked you into his chest, pulling the blanket back over the two of you. You snuggled back into him, still lulled by the pull of sleep. You felt a kiss on your shoulder as you fell into a deep sleep, Narumi’s arms tight around you.

Narumi left just before midday, after the two of you had made and eaten breakfast.

“I’ll cook,” he’d declared early in the morning, and you had eyed him dubiously but let him take charge anyway. Usually, Narumi was far from a morning person—you knew of his terrible sleep schedule and video game addiction, of course, but whenever he was over at yours, he was always up early. Wanted to spend as much time with you as possible, he’d explain whenever you asked.

Thankfully, he hadn’t done a horrible job—he’d cooked up something that was perfectly edible. After eating together, his phone had started buzzing incessantly—calls from his vice-captain, he elaborated as he picked them up—(“Where the hell are you, Narumi?!” Hasegawa’s voice crackled harshly through the line, making Narumi wince before he immediately hung up). You had ushered him out the door quickly after that.

He'd kissed you goodbye and then leapt off the balcony, disappearing into the business of the city.

You scoffed at his dramatics as you watched him go, before stepping back inside. Thankfully, today was a rest day for you. Unlike Narumi’s work, you usually got the weekends off from the hospital, and today was Saturday, meaning that your sleep-in was well-deserved and hadn’t caused you any trouble. You supposed that was also why Narumi had thought it would be alright to visit you at 2am the previous night.

Only moments later, right after you’d made yourself your second coffee of the morning, someone else was knocking on your door.

“Soushirou?!”

When you slipped it open, it was your older brother, his grin bright as he pulled you into a tight hug. Soushirou rarely had time to visit and hadn’t come to your place in almost half a year, so it was safe to say his sudden appearance caught you off guard. As you greeted him, you found yourself feeling an immeasurable amount of relief that Narumi had been called to work barely twenty minutes ago.

You feared your apartment building would have been done for if the two of them had run into each other. You doubted a fight between the two of them would be anything short of completely destructive.

“How’s my precious, sweet little sister doing!” Soushirou exclaimed cheerfully as he pulled away from the hug to survey you properly. He’d squeezed you so tight that you were left catching your breath.

“Good, onii-chan,” you managed to say as Soushirou squeezed you into another hug.

“You look tired,” he said as he followed you into your apartment, collapsing onto your couch, “Have you been sleeping well?”

“Yeahhh,” you said in a hopefully convincing tone. By the looks of it, Soushirou didn’t seem convinced, so you continued, “Just tiring days at the hospital, you know?”

Soushirou hummed doubtfully but said nothing else on the matter. You took his silence as him letting the subject go and headed to the fridge to get him something to drink, distracting yourself to hopefully make him forget and stop probing.

“Did you encounter a kaiju?”

You froze at his sudden question, your hand on the fridge handle as you threw a glance over your shoulder to look at him with a frown, “What?”

“There’s guts on the floor.”

Your eyes widened with horror. You’d completely forgotten about the bloodstains near your door from where Narumi had come in last night. It didn’t help that Soushirou had shown up without any warning, either. You fumbled with the Calpis you were fetching for your brother as you rushed to come up with an excuse, “Oh, no, it was just an accident at work. Don’t worry about it.”

Soushirou was too observant for his own good. You made a mental reminder to tell him later that he had to call you at least an hour before visiting at any given time.

“Do you have a day off today?” You asked quickly to change the topic before Soushirou could push you further on the subject.

“Oh, yeah, it’s my day off,” he said, waving his hand dismissively, “Some of my officers were trailing me, and I got tired trying to lose them, so that’s why I’m here.”

You furrowed your brows, “What, do they think you’re up to something?”

“Probably,” he shrugged, taking the Calpis from your hands and popping it open to sip from the straw, “They trailed me all the way from base. Can you believe it! Bet they think they’re being slick.”

You scoffed, settling down on the couch beside him, “Just order them to leave you alone.”

“I think it’s a good exercise for them,” Soushirou said with an odd smile—that odd smile he always had when he was planning something, “Besides, they need something fun to do, anyway. They rarely get days off altogether.”

You hummed in response. That much you were aware of. Soushirou’s schedule was always packed, so packed that you barely ever saw him. Soichirou was even further away and barely ever around either, and you also knew from Narumi that even on their days off, they were often called in on emergencies.

Kaijus didn’t care that it was the weekend, after all. They attacked whenever they liked.

You absently listened to him talk until you lulled yourself to sleep on his shoulder.

Soushirou noticed you’d fallen asleep halfway through his sentence about Kafka Hibino’s entrance exam situation. Your head was tilted at an undoubtedly uncomfortable angle, and he repositioned you so that you could lie flat on the sofa. Then, he stood up—he figured he’d go to the bathroom and then head off to let you rest in quiet.

It was clear you were exhausted. It made him feel a little guilty for coming over to disturb your day off.

Something he always appreciated about you was how clean and tidy your apartment always was. You owned very few things, having only moved out of home recently for your junior doctor job at the Tokyo hospital, so most of your things were still back at home.

But when Soushirou stepped into the bathroom, he immediately noticed that some things were off.

Firstly, there were two toothbrushes by the sink—your usual dark purple one that matched Soushirou’s own childhood toothbrush, and then another pink one that sat in the same cup. That made him frown suspiciously. Secondly, there was undeniably a large men’s shirt hanging over the side of your overflowing laundry basket. And to put the nail in the coffin, thirdly, there were two pairs of slippers placed by the door—your smaller, purple pair and then a larger, pink set.

What made it all worse was that as he was throwing his Calpis carton into the bin, he glimpsed what was unmistakeably a freshly used condom in the trash as well. Soushirou looked away as quickly as he could—it felt like a total invasion of privacy—but he couldn’t unsee what he’d already seen, and now he was left feeling completely confused and a little bit frustrated.

Of course, Soushirou knew that his sister was beautiful. Who wouldn’t find you gorgeous? You were smart, strong and ambitious, the best sibling out of the three of them, if he had to say. You were beautiful in every sense of the word.

That only made Soushirou frown even more, because what man out there could possibly be enough to deserve his perfect little sister?

Sure, he hadn’t visited you in a couple of months—maybe many months—but had that really been enough time for you to settle down with a man? And you hadn’t even bothered to tell him. He frowned, but once he was done in the bathroom and headed out, you were still fast asleep on the couch and that halted his thoughts.

Despite his own curiosity, he wasn’t going to wake you up just to harass you about your love life.

Instead, he tucked you gently into a blanket and then headed towards the door—but not before narrowing his eyes and examining the kaiju guts that unmistakeably stained the floor by your front door, despite your denial that it had been an accident at work.

Who did you take him for? He’d recognise kaiju organs when he was half-asleep with his eyes closed. As he leaned down to look at them closer, he realised that this was the blood of the massive daikaiju they had been dealing with last night—during the joint operation between the First and Third Divisions.

There was…no way you were seeing one of his officers, right?

In that moment, Soushirou made up his mind. Whoever it was, he was going to find out. He’d start by interrogating his officers the moment they got back from their day off.

With that, he quietly closed your front door and slipped away into the city.
