When he was a child, their home was full of the small house lizards - geckos, as everyone called them. If you caught one, it would twist and writhe until, in a desperate act of freedom, it tore off its own tail to escape. He feels in some way he might have taken after them.
A wise creature, really - willing to sacrifice a living, red-blooded part of itself to protect something greater: life, freedom, the simple right to stay itself. Yet not without a promise that, when the time comes, it will grow back.
And he’s done the same, again and again, giving up pieces of himself for keeping what mattered most. It’s worked for years, he truly believes it kept him alive in some ways. But lately he’s begun to wonder how much of him is left to lose. And whether, unlike the lizard, he forgot to find a safe place to grow them back and instead learned to live with the small he can allow himself to have.—---------
