Chapter Text
Amy and Kari couldn't be more dissimilar. Amy was loud and flamboyant, chaotic and destructive. Kari was quiet and meticulous; every action had a purpose with her, every detail of everything prim and perfect. Amy was as informal and rude as they came, and Kari was posh and polite, even when speaking to her worst enemies. Amy’s hair was usually wind swept, her clothes ripped and muddy. Kari was always well groomed and dressed up for all occasions; casual wear was not an option.
Despite all of these differences, the two couldn't help but to be madly in love. They had only made their relationship official two months ago, but still. They'd been through a lot together— Amy had helped Kari escape a cult, Kari had saved Amy from a darker version of herself, they'd saved the wizarding world together on this side of the pond multiple times.
With such hectic lives quiet moments were hard to come by. It was only by some stroke of luck (and Kari’s meticulous planning) that they were able to sneak away from the Scamanders’ apartment (where they'd both been staying since spring) to explore the city of New York.
Currently, the two were bundled up in their winter coats and mittens, strolling through Central Park. Well, Kari was strolling, anyway. Amy was skipping through the piles of plowed snow and screaming Christmas carols at the top of her lungs. Only, she couldn't remember most of the words to the songs, since she'd just learned most of them a week ago, so she made up her own lyrics instead.
This might have been sweet if not for the profanity.
“UP ON THE HOUSE TOP, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, GO RIGHT DOWN THE CHIMNEY YA GREAT BIG DICK!”
“Amy!” Kari admonished, but she was laughing. Her white-blonde hair blended with the snow behind her, and her pale cheeks were flushed red from the cold wind. She wore her favorite purple fur coat and matching boots. Blue-grey eyes sparkled like the snowflakes reflecting in the sun as she laughed.
Amy grinned back, hazel eyes full of mischief. Her dark red hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, but the wind had pulled many strands loose, which made her look a bit mad, in fact. She wore a bright red men's peacoat and women's skinny jeans.
Her girlfriend's amusement only egged her own, “WRECK YOUR BALLS AND TAKE POUNDS OF MOLLY, FA LA LA, LA, LA, LA, LA!”
Kari cackled, shaking her head vigorously at her girlfriend. “Stop! There are children in this park!”
“AND I BROUGHT SOME PORN FOR WATCHING, THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED WAY DOWN LOW, LET US BLOW, LET US BLOW, LET US BLOW!”
This one got them more than a few dirty looks from enraged mothers, but Kari was still chuckling and shaking her head when she pulled Amy close to her. “You are just awful.”
“You love me,” Amy grinned.
“I didn't say I didn't.”
“Yeah. I love you too.”
They embraced one another as their lips met for a kiss. Kari’s hands slipped around Amy's waist; Amy ran her fingers through the curly strands of Kari’s hair. The moment is sweet, but fleeting as Amy spots one of the vendors’ carts across the park. Screeching like a banshee, she drags Kari through the piles of snow to get to the vendor cart. They were selling a steamy cup of creamy looking liquid with squishy white marshmallows and whipped cream on top.
The vendor smiled, albeit a bit apprehensively. They held two cups out to the girls, looking a bit frightened of them, as if they thought one of them was going to bite their fingers off. Perhaps it was because they had heard Amy's songs. “Hot chocolate?”
Amy took the styrofoam cup from the timid vendor, eyeing the drink with a vicious curiosity. “I've never had hot chocolate before…I grew up in a cave, see?” she added for the vendor’s sake, since Kari already knew this piece of information.
“Oh?” the vendor responded. They glanced at Kari, probably for confirmation that this red haired girl was not indeed mad.
Kari offered little assurance, however, as she only shrugged and said, “I've never had hot chocolate that wasn't actively trying to burn my eyebrows off while I was drinking it…”
The vendor blinked. “What?”
Neither girl offered up a coherent explanation for the poor lad, tossing the money for the drinks at him and skipping off hand and hand. Their only parting words were Amy's call of, “Thanks, guy!”
With their arms looped together, the girls cautiously sipped their hot chocolate. Though perhaps not cautiously enough, as they both managed to burn their tongues. Not that that stopped them from sharing laughter and enjoying the rest of the drink.
It was rounding at noon when the girls were found by none other than Newt Scamander himself — aka, Amy’s unofficial adopted grandfather. He found them sitting on the ice cold bench, snuggled up together, a fuzzy scarf thrown around both their necks. Newt was bundled up in his own yellow and grey scarf and muggle peacoat.
“Ah, there you two are. Tina was getting worried…”
Newt was one of those people who talked in another's direction, but he never quite made eye contact with them, even in his old age. Even as he spoke to his adopted granddaughter and her girlfriend, he stared at the lake behind the girls rather than either of their faces.
“She said there was a surprise waiting back at the apartment…”
“Ooh! I love surprises!” Amy jumped to her feet, the scarf she and Kari had been wearing dropping to the ground. “Let's go! Let's go!” She jumped up and down, clapping her hands.
Newt smiled softly with affection for his granddaughter. The girls grab hold of his arms, and they apperate back to the apartment. Upon appearing in the main room of the complex, one could see boxes upon boxes of Christmas decorations. Tinsel and candy canes and ornaments and wreaths and of course mistletoe.
Amy and Kari started sorting through the boxes at once; Amy placed a Santa Clause hat on her head and a strand of tinsel around her neck like a scarf.
“Queenie dropped these off as a holiday surprise,” Tina explained. “We're Jewish so we don't usually celebrate Christmas, but she thought you girls would like it.”
“It’s amazing, thank you,” Kari said politely. Meanwhile, Amy was already swinging around the apartment, cackling madly as she hung the Christmas lights all over the place.
“There's a tree too,” Tina added, gesturing at the pine tree in the corner of the room.
And thus the Scamanders spent the rest of the day helping the girls decorate the apartment and the tree. At dinner time they had a feast, and everyone went to bed happy.
