Maritime Danganronpa: Ennui's Effigy - Prologue

Summary:

16 ultimates are trapped in a seaside hotel and forced into a sick game of sacrifices by a skeletal animatronic fish.

Notes:

Hello! This is the Prologue to my Fanganronpa, Maritime Danganronpa: Ennui's Effigy. I currently have no plans of continuing posting chapters past the prologue, as I don't feel my writing is good enough yet nor I do not have enough free time to dedicate to this project. The art you see is not up to my standards and was rushed. I may edit this story and art in the future. With all that in mind, I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: Leave Your Body and Soul at the Door

Chapter Text

Emily: Initial breakdown, bloating, active decay, advanced decay, and then dry remains.

Emily: Morbid as it is, this is what comes to mind when people ask me what comes after death.

Emily: To me, it’s more comforting than anything. I had never been one to believe in a higher power or ghosts, so knowing what exactly will happen to my remains is relieving in a way.

Emily: I have seen many people in my time processing death. I’ve seen widows and widowers who are using the minutiae of planning to distract from the fresh pain. I’ve seen estranged relatives, unsure of what to do for the deceased. I’ve seen parents who’ve lost their children, tearfully recounting the few months they had together.

Emily: I make myself the person those left behind need me to be. I can be a shoulder to cry on, someone to blame, an advisor. I fill each of these roles with pride.

Emily: This commitment has earned me the title of Ultimate Funeral Director. To think I could be part of a nearly 100-year old American institute. The Ultimate Program will cover my expenses for my career for the next year.

Emily: All I have to do is show a group from the Academy what I have achieved so far with their funding.

Emily: It’s simple, and I’m confident in my talent, but if I fail…

Emily: No. I won’t. I can’t let that happen.

Emily: Michelle. Is everything well?

Emily: That’s good to hear. My flight went well. I found my suitcase, yes. I’m just waiting on the van for the Ultimate Conference.

Emily:  I can’t believe it either. I know it's been a year already, but being an Ultimate still feels unreal. I hope my panel will be interesting.

Emily: Yes. I am very excited for the Ultimate Forensics Specialist’s panel. I heard there will be shows by the Ultimate Actress and Burlesque Dancer as well. I think having us come so early is a little excessive, though. Ultimates are very busy people.

Emily: Ah, you’re right. Being able to keep our titles for another year is a rather strong motivator to miss two weeks of work. I feel like I haven’t fully processed it yet.

Emily: Oh! I think I see the van coming around the corner. I’ll call you later. Don’t hesitate if you need any help. I have full trust in you that you can run things smoothly in my absence.

Emily: Yes. Goodbye. I’ll try my best. I love you, too.

Emily: Good morning.

Emily: As I step into the van, I am seized by a pain unlike anything I’ve felt before.

Emily: Everything goes dark.
