   ‘He didn't recall the impact, not exactly. One moment he was aiming for the slug in the shadows and the next, his knees folded.
   "Look at me, Eli." His friend’s voice, low but urgent. His breath was rugged, eyes locked on Eli’s. "Eyes on me. Right here. Focus."
   Eli's lids drooped.
   “No, no. Stay with me. We’re gonna fix this, okay? We’ll fix it. Just stay awake.”
   He thought he was prepared, he really did.
   But the pain wasn’t sharp anymore, it was everywhere. His mind, his muscles, his breath.
   What if he just gave into it, just rested his eyes for a second? If he could just rest his eyes, only for five minutes. He'd wake up again, right? He'd wake up to fight again, later.’
