   Summary

   Long before the Battle of Serenity, Malcolm Reynolds was fighting a war for independence, taking every recruit sent to him and training them to fight their way to survival.

   In a pause in their frontline fighting, his company is sent back to the base to collect the latest round of green recruits to refill the lives they've lost in the latest engagement.

   And his youngest squad member- Scout, a thirteen-year-old trenchrunner- does what he does best, outside of surviving enemy fire that has taken down far older soldiers. His best, which seems to be getting himself into trouble.
