Work Text:
It seemed like just another normal day, or well, night. Everything was calm and quiet. A perfectly peaceful night. Everyone seemed relaxed and were just doing their own thing. Except for one man. Benji Hattori, Tristan Vik's boyfriend. He was in the middle of thinking and pacing. He wanted to give Tristan something. A special thing. Aka a ring, he wanted to propose. Simply because he just loved Tristan so much he wanted to give them this ring he had gotten so long ago.
Benji was never particularly good with words, usually mostly when it mattered. He could rattle off a joke to a group of his classmates, earning mostly just a few groans. He could even make a worse joke to his friends with ease. Then, when it came to Tristan… his Tristan.. The one who captured his heart without even meaning to or trying, he became a flustered mess of words. Words always felt too small for what he wanted to tell them.
Tonight was no different, that's why he was pacing. He was in the kitchen and occasionally wiped his slightly cold yet sweaty hands on the counter out of nervousness. He even occasionally reached into his sweater pocket to fiddle with the ring box. It felt like his heart was gonna rip the stitching and make the box and ring fall out due to how fast and hard it was beating. He tried to focus on the little things to calm himself. Like the smell of lavender wafting in through the open window, or the soft humming of the fridge. Or even the warm light from the kitchen lamp that Tristan had bought so long ago.
But every time he calmed, he'd fiddle with the box in his pocket and he'd get anxious again. He'd always have to calm himself again and again. It was almost agonizing.
Tristan was out back, leaning against the railing of the porch, staring at the stars like usual at this time. Well, more or less just staring at the sky, usually all the lights of LA were on and the sounds were blasting so the actual stars were hard to see even at the best of times. But Tristan still liked staring at the sky either way. They were always so peaceful at times like these.
Benji swallowed hard as he stared, mentally convincing himself that he could do this. After all, it was just a few simple words. It should be very easy. This was Tristan and he used to always find them easy to talk to.
But when he stepped outside, he froze a bit, staring at them. The moonlight spilling over them and making their hair shimmer and shine. They looked almost ethereal like this, it was almost too much. He loved them, this moment. He could feel the emotions tugging at him and making him uncertain of asking them to be with him forever again. Not wanting them to possibly say no.
“Hey Tris” he called over, his voice sounding a bit rougher and more awkward than he meant for it to be. Tristan still turned around with a big smile that could light up any room. “Hey” they replied, their voice quiet but welcoming and warm as they smiled lovingly. “Everything okay?"
Benji now paused, hesitating a bit. They cocked their head to the side, smiling still. That smile, it was like it was encouraging him, like they knew what he wanted to ask despite him never making it obvious. Their lavender blue eyes were also filled with encouragement and understanding as they waited for their boyfriend's answer. The look gave Benji more confidence, making the anxiety feel so much smaller.
“Yea.. It's just.. I've been thinking about stuff for a while now…” he had his fingers in his sweater pocket already, just nervously fiddling with it. Tristan's smile softened more. Their gaze never left his. “You know Benji, you don't have to rush into anything… whatever it is, I'll always be here…” Benji immediately felt a sharp breath and tried to calm himself. This was something he needed, something he wanted desperately.
Benji took the ring box out of his sweater pocket and took another deep sharp breath as Tristan glanced at it. They just blinked in confusion for a second. They were still smiling that pleasant smile they always used with him.
“Tris.. I-” His voice cracked at that moment and he blushed as he cleared his throat. They reached out as they blushed too, realizing slightly. They brushed their fingers against his wrist and grounded him with that simple touch. “You don't have to say all the words.. Few word do trick you know.” They chuckled softly. They were rubbing his hand gently with their fingers. “I'll listen carefully…”
Benji swallowed hard and smiled happily. He knelt down on one knee now and slowly opened the hot pink velveted box to reveal a ring. It wasn't a grand ring, just a simple silver band with a small pale amethyst in it. The gem was to match Tristan's eyes. Their lavender eyes widened immediately and they blushed. Their eyes flickered between Benji's face and the ring.
“I want you to know my heart belongs to you. All of it.. So.. Tris..will you marry me?”
Silence, deafening silence. Benji immediately started panicking internally. Did he go too fast? Be too bold? Benji started shaking a bit as he waited for Tristan's answer. Benji even let out a small squeak. Tristan eventually stepped closer, going to their knees too and hugged Benji tightly with happy tears in their eyes.
“Benji..” They whispered, their voice happy and cracking with it, “you're so freaking wonderful, yes, a thousand times yes!” Benji blinked, his heart thudding in his chest as they cupped his face with trembling hands. "Wait, are you... really?" he asked, feeling a laugh bubble in his throat. Tristan smiled through their joyful tears and nodded. “Of course, really. I love you, I love you so so much.”
Then, finally, with a laugh of half relief and half joy, Benji slipped the ring onto their finger. The moment settled it, they leaned in and kissed him gently. A soft, tender kiss, one that could heal every kind of wound and end all fear. It felt like it could last forever.
Under the soft light of the stars and full moon, the world is still spinning around them. Benji now knew that whatever came next, the two of them would face it together. Words may not come easily but now he didn't need them to. He had his Tristan now, and they would understand anything he wanted to say. The duo watched the stars together now as they cuddled on a chair on that balcony, slowly dozing off together.
