Chapter Text
It was a pretty sunny August morning, although the high that day was surprisingly low for California standards. Maybe autumn came early this year, or it’s just a really nice day today. On the colorful streets of San Fransokyo, a young lady glides by on a skateboard. Her auburn hair fluttered in the wind, while the sunlight reflected off her majestic, brown eyes. A loose, black blouse flapped in the wind, exposing one of her shoulders. She wore black jean shorts to go with it, and black and grey striped tights underneath. She opted to wear her ivory white converse today, since she felt like not matching everything all black. She also decided she was going to skate to school instead of ride the bus, seeing as campus wasn’t too far from her apartment.
As she reached the San Fransokyo Fine Arts Institute, she stopped to take in the campus. She had seen it before on the internet and such, but in person... It looked so majestic, and pristine. It felt nearly a world away from the city it was a part of, yet it meshed almost perfectly into a land it shouldn't. A wide toothed smile graced her lightly freckled face, as she thought to herself. 'I think I’m really gonna like it here.' As she said this, a lady appeared just in front of her. This young woman sported long, raven black hair, with bluish-violet eyes. She was wearing a pink headband, which went along nicely with her pink sweater. She had some blue jeans on that somewhat turned into bell bottoms at the end of the pant legs. Paired with comfortable, stylish black boots to go with her outfit.
“Hey Penny!” She yelled out, flagging down the girl with a skateboard. Penny looked back in front of her, quickly flipping her skateboard up under her arm, and ran over to the girl.
“Hey Violet, I didn’t see ya there!” She chimed, finally close enough to hug her old friend.
The two quickly embraced before letting go, which allowed Violet to get a good look at Penny.
“Wow, I never took you for a skater Penny. Let alone one with a sense of comfy style.” Violet replied, a slight touch of sarcasm rolling off her tongue with the reply.
Penny rolled her eyes, shaking her head slightly with a smile, “Okay Vi, but yeah. I started skating recently so I could get around much easier.”
“That’s pretty cool Penny, but you know you can hitch rides with me. My dad gave me his old Chevelle when I moved here for school.” Violet remarked.
Penny squealed with a sense of joy, “No way, he did?! That’s amazing Vi, now we can go wherever we want!” She said, practically jumping with joy.
“Yep, but we can catch up at lunch. I gotta head to class now- Oh wait, before I do, how about one of your signature camera selfies?” She said, making a picture gesture with her hands.
Penny’s face lit up, as she quickly fumbled through her bag to pull out her trusty camera. “Yep, you always have the right idea, Vi.” She quickly turned around, pacing the camera towards her and Violet, clicking a button and snapping the photo.
“That’s a keeper.” She said, turning back to face Violet again.
Violet readjusted the strap of her bag, “Mhm, now I better head to class. See ya later for lunch. I know this great place near campus that serves great Japanese fusion.”
“Sounds great Vi, see ya then!” She replied, quickly hugging her friend one more time before going their separate ways. She really was gonna enjoy San Fransokyo.
About thirty or so minutes from SFAI, was another campus, the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. A majority of students were already toiling away in their classes, or busy working on their personal projects in the workshops. In one room in a rather quiet workshop, two young men were sitting around. Well, one was and the other was busy readjusting a few circuits on a chip. He was wearing an old SFIT ballcap to keep his messy, black hair out of his eyes. He kept it backwards since the bill would be in the way, and it kept his hair pinned back better. He had the sleeves of his black hoodie pushed up, with a purple collared button up on top of said hoodie. He was also wearing a pair of loose fitting black cargo pants that stopped just above his shoes. His shoes of choice were a pair of old beat up Vans, black preferably.
His eyes were fixated down on the work in front of him, but once he finished, he finally stood up, letting the sun grace his brownish eyes, with a slight amber glow to them. He looked over at the other guy in the room, who was busy looking at his phone. The other man in question had his black hair styled in a pompadour look, with an iconic cowlick. Not an over-the-top look, but a presentable one. His outfit started with a dark blue t-shirt that had a lightning bolt over a planet, which was tucked into his jeans, supported by a brown belt. This, combined with his jeans being rolled at the end of the pant legs, along with black converse gave him a very retro look.
“Wil, you mind putting your phone down for a minute. I want you to look at something really quick.” The guy in the ballcap asked, with a slight tiresome tone to his delivery.
“Yeah, sure thing Hiro. What’s up?” Wilbur replied, setting the phone down on a desk and walking over.
“Check it out, I finally finished the circuit board for Baymax. Hopefully this one works and I can finish his next upgrade.” He said, staring at the circuit board with a sense of pride.
“Hopefully it does. By the way, you never said what the upgrade was for anyways.” Wilbur said, “I mean, all I know is you are trying to upgrade him. Which isn’t very descriptive, especially for you.”
Hiro rubbed the back of his neck, “Oh- Forgot about that.. Sorry Wil. The upgrade is meant to upgrade his resistance to elements, like fire and deep pressure water. Hopefully like this, he can be used to help in rescue efforts involving those scenarios."
Wilbur patted him on the shoulder, “That’s pretty neat Hiro. You did good with this one, bud.”
Hiro chuckled softly, “Nah, this was all Tadashi. I’m just helping his vision reach its fullest potential..” His voice softened at the end, almost to a whisper.
Wilbur comforted his friend with another pat on the shoulder, “I’m sure he’s super proud of you right now.”
“Yeah, I hope he is..” Hiro replied, quickly returning to his more normal mood.
Wilbur heard a chime originate from his phone, as he quickly went to go check it. He tapped the screen a couple times before looking back up at Hiro.
“Hey, wanna head somewhere for lunch in a little bit?” He said, getting Hiro’s attention.
Hiro nodded in approval, “Yeah, sure. Where’d you have in mind?” He asked curiously since they always seemed to go to the same three places nearby.
“It’s this Japanese fusion place; Violet just texted me about it. Oh, it’s over near SFAI, but we don’t gotta go if you don’t wanna, since that’s rival turf and all.”
Hiro shook his head, “No, we can go. It’d be nice to catch up with Violet since it sounds like she’s going?” He asked, just to be sure.
“Yeah, she’s going. It’s a good distance from here though, you wanna get going now so we can beat the lunch rush?” Wilbur asked, knowing how long Hiro could take to walk at times.
Hiro contemplated it for a second, before speaking again, “Yeah, we can go right now. I don’t have any afternoon classes anymore, thankfully.”
Wilbur nodded, typing something into the phone before looking back up, “Alrighty then. We can kill some time afterwards and maybe do something fun.”
“It is a nice day today. Plenty to do outside or inside, so our options are open.” Hiro acknowledged, staring out the window of the room.
"Precisely my genius compadre. Now come on, let's get going!"
The two collected their belongings and began to leave the room. Hiro grabbed his backpack which sat by the window. He stared back outside once he slung his backpack over his shoulder, cracking a soft smile as the sun reflected off the glass. 'Good start to the year I suppose.'
