“But that is not even the weirdest thing about Sydney Novak.”
Shut up. Shut up, just shut up!
“Get this, Sydney claims that she has-”
Shut up!
And then all hell breaks loose.
Brad’s headless body falls to the ground, bloody and limp and very, very dead. Shit. Sydney, what the FUCK did you just do?! Everyone is screaming, running, trying to get away. It takes Syd a moment to process what just happened. There’s blood on her dress, on her face, in her hair.
Everywhere.
She didn’t mean to. She just wanted him to stop talking. Before she even realises what she’s doing, she’s running. Not slowing down, she runs out into the street, dress still soaked in blood, legs getting tired but refusing to stop. She feels like she’s going to puke up her fucking guts. She can’t go back. Where can she go, though? Anywhere, anywhere but here, she decides.
She doesn’t know what happened to Dina, or Stan. She doesn’t want to know. It’s better for everyone if she just leaves. Just keep running, Syd. The street is empty, and lit up by the too-bright streetlights. There’s no sound apart from her own footsteps and heavy breathing.
Sydney Novak is alone.
“Syd, wait!!!”
At least, she was alone.
Dina’s words cut through the silence. Sydney’s eyes widen, as she just stops and stands there in the street, not turning back at Dina, as she can’t bear to look at her.
“Syd, look at me!” Dina shouts, running up to Syd, hair messed up with blood splattered all over her previously-pink dress. She’s panting, out of breath from chasing after Sydney.
Reluctantly, Sydney turns around, eyes dull, face blank, still in a state of shock and horror at what she just did. She speaks coldly. “Dina, just go.”
“No, I… I’m not leaving you,” Dina breathes shakily, eyes darting up and down to take in the entirety of Syd. “What the fuck happened back there? What… Are you okay?”
Sydney so badly wanted to just pull Dina in, to hug her close and stay with her forever, because, goddamn it, she felt so alone. But she didn’t. She couldn’t risk doing anything else. She tried. So, so hard. But it wasn’t enough. Maybe she was just never meant to fit in. She laughs dryly. In circumstances like these, people act strangely. Laughing is easier than crying.
“Obviously, I’m not okay, Dina.”
“Look,” Dina says firmly, grabbing Syd’s hands. “I don’t know what the hell is going on, but I’m staying with you, okay?”
“Didn’t you see what happened back there?!” Sydney yells, eyes watery, finally letting the emotions come through. Dina flinches, startled, and for a moment, Syd regrets shouting but then the words keep spilling out and she just can’t stop. “I killed him, okay?! I did that. It’s not safe for you to stay with me, got it?! I just-”
“Oh, Syd, that’s ridiculous!” Dina cuts her off. “What do you mean you killed him? How is that even possible?”
“I don’t know how, but I just did,” Syd mutters, a lot quieter now. “There’s this…thing. I can… do things. With my mind. I wanted to tell you before, but I just didn’t. I’m sorry.”
There’s a thick silence in the air. Dina doesn’t reply for a moment, as if trying to figure out what to say. When she finally speaks, it sounds too loud and out of place in the quiet street.
“So…you have superpowers? That’s actually pretty awesome if you think about it.”
Sydney scoffs. “Yeah, this…” She gestures to her blood soaked dress angrily. “This is really fucking awesome, isn’t it?!”
“I didn’t mean it like that!” Dina sighs, exasperated. “I just…” She moves closer to Syd, still gripping her hands tight. “I meant that it makes you special. Like, apart from tonight, it could be really cool. I could help you-”
“Don’t you get it?! I don’t want to be special!” Syd’s throat feels rough as she yells again, and snatches her hands away from Dina’s. “I tried so, so hard to fit in, but Brad was right, okay?! I can’t! No wonder everyone in my life thinks I’m a piece of shit!”
“That’s not true!”
“Why don’t you hate me, Dina?” Sydney was properly crying now, completely broken. “After what I did back there, you should hate me. You shouldn’t have run after me.”
Dina grabs Syd’s shoulders, firmly. “I could never hate you, Syd. You’re my best friend, I’m always with you. I love you.”
Quickly, and quite forcefully, Dina pulls her in for a hug and grips her tight, not letting her go. Syd relaxes, for a moment, letting herself melt into Dina, because it just feels so good to be held. Then, Syd hears Dina whisper in her ear, “You know what Brad said…about you being in love with me…is that true?”
Sydney suddenly jolts back, shocked. “Are you actually serious right now? Brad is dead, I’m literally covered in his blood, and I’m probably going to have to run away and never return or something, and you’re asking if I’m in love with you?!!”
“Yes!!!” Dina cries, hysterical, tears streaming down her face too, matching Sydney. “What happened with Brad happened, and it was goddamn awful, but if you are actually leaving, I want to know before you go! Do you love me?!”
It’s a surprise that no one had heard them yet, as they’re shouting so loudly. Syd looks at Dina. Really looks at her. Gazing into her dark eyes, she debates what to say. The answer is yes, of course, but she doesn’t want to admit that out loud. Dina just looks so beautiful though. Completely undone, with mascara smudged across her face and her hair frizzy and messy, but somehow still completely beautiful. And Syd loves her so, so much. Everything is so broken at this point, it doesn’t even matter.
Now is as good a time as any for a confession, right?
“Yes, I love you! God, I know I’m weird, and I know it’s not normal, but I love you so fucking much, Dina!”
Without hesitation, Dina pulls Sydney in again, only this time it’s for a kiss. Their lips meet. Sparks fly.
Sydney wraps her hands around Dina’s waist, holding her closer, deepening the kiss. Dina’s lips taste like blood, and so do Syd’s, and the whole thing is so fucked up, but also so wildly surreal at the same time that they don’t even care anymore. Everything is blurry when they pull away; the streetlights seem a hundred times brighter, and Syd is strangely more aware of the dampness of her dress, and the fact that there is literal blood and guts soaked into it.
“Holy shit,” says Syney, eyes wide, body tense, moving away slowly but still not letting go of Dina. If her face wasn’t red already from the blood, Dina would have seen it turn red from the blushing.
“Holy shit,” repeats Dina, breathless. “So…what the hell are we doing now?”
Syd laughs. It’s quiet at first, then quickly escalates to a loud, hysterical cackle. And, before she knows it, Dina’s laughing too, just completely overwhelmed by the hilarity of their situation.
“This is so messed up!” Syd cries. “I can’t fucking believe it!”
“Me neither!” Dina screams back. “I feel completely mortified right now, like WHAT? How did all of that just happen?!”
The whole world could fall apart, for all they care. It wouldn’t matter. It gets to a point where no one even gives a shit what happens anymore, and Syd and Dina are way past that point. Who cares that they might have to run away forever because of what Syd just did? Who cares that they’re still covered in the remains of Dina’s ex-boyfriend? Who cares if Sydney Novak has extremely unreliable superpowers that could potentially murder more people if she gets a bit too angry?
They could always leave together…that wouldn’t be so bad, right? Nothing really bad could happen as long as they have each other.
Grabbing each other’s hands, feeling completely high right now, they spin around insanely in the empty street, screaming, still wearing their stained-red dresses. And that’s how Stanley Barber finds them, after running all the way to try and check up on Syd (only after waking up from Brad punching him, of course). He looks at them, confused, dumbstruck, absolutely at a loss for words.
He pauses for a minute before finally speaking.
“Okay, guys, what the FUCK?!”
