Sora somehow landed within the foliage instead of his intended location at the base of the tree, limbs tangled between the branches and leaves. He immediately let out a groan at the messed up landing, but his frustration did not last long as he heard two little voices coming from below.
A young boy with brown hair raced past the tree on Destiny Islands, giggling like mad and encouraging his friend to follow him. His friend, a young boy with silver hair, lagged behind a few paces, nervously watching the sky as he walked with a wooden sword held firmly in his hands.
A meteor shot past, and Sora knew that he was about to witness a promise he thought was long forgotten.
"Come on Riku! It'll look perfect from right here!" Little Sora shouted, patting a sandy hill made near the shoreline.
"The shooting stars look pretty close," Little Riku responded, moving to stand next to Little Sora for the moment instead of sitting like he was meant to be.
Sora normally was not one to time travel after everything that has happened, yet with his memories getting scrambled before being reassembled, he needed the help with remembering this particular memory. His friends had managed to contain the scenario for him to witness and assist him in rebuilding his own mind, therefore his time travel should not affect any of the events he witnessed here, but he was highly encouraged not to change anything that occurred to avoid an unstable foundation from being formed. The whole process was all very complex and went very high above his head. All he knew was that he was here and should not interfere.
Little Sora had finally coaxed Little Riku to sit down and observe the meteor shower, and a small one flew by overhead just as he did. He gasped before shaking Little Riku's shoulder. "Make a wish, Riku!" He shouted, pointing high into the sky.
Little Riku rolled his eyes, but true to his nature as a five year old, he clasped his hands together and muttered a small wish to himself, secretly hoping that it would come true. He then opened his eyes to find another meteor flying, though this one was significantly closer to the islands than the first. "Make a wish, Sora," he said, though his tone was much more apprehensive in comparison to the vibrating four-year-old at his side.
"I wish that we can be together forever, and go on adventures all the time and eat yummy food!" Little Sora responded, clasping his own hands together in a loud clap.
Little Riku laughed. "You're not supposed to say your wish, or else it won't come true!"
"Nuh-uh, Dad said that if you wish hard enough, anything can come true!"
The bantering between the two really warmed Sora's heart. It was very hard to remember how small him and Riku used to be. Their hands were so chubby and their voices were so full of glee and innocence. He found himself laughing at the children, causing the tree to shake and threaten to drop him.
A few more meteors flew by, each one growing significantly closer to the islands from their predecessor. It was actually quite frightening, even for this more grown-up Sora. He was getting nervous from the thought of one of them hitting the large tree that he landed in and setting him and the leaves on fire. He did not enjoy the sensation of being on fire.
"Those are getting really close, Sora, what if a shooting star hits the islands?" Little Riku ask, clutching the little wooden sword between his fingers in fear.
It seemed that Little Sora had just now grasped the situation as one of the meteors seemed like it hit the mainland in a blaze, completely startling him out of his excitement over the shooting stars. Very quickly his entire demeanor had shifted. His lip started quivering and his eyes started watering as another meteor raced on by.
"I'm scared, Riku. I don't think I like this anymore."
Little Riku looked down at the toy sword in his hands before looking back towards the sky. Shooting stars were flying everywhere, taking over the night sky as they set it ablaze. He then looked over to Little Sora, who was wiping his eyes and hiccuping, flinching when a meteor got too close to the mainland.
Little Riku stood up, holding his toy sword up as high as possible as he watched the fiery night rage on. "If a shooting star comes this way, I'll hit it right back into outer space!" Little Riku shouted, swinging his sword for dramatic effect and making Little Sora laugh.
Little Sora stood up with Little Riku and shouted, "Thanks Riku!"
The boys smiled at each other before Little Riku's eyes brightened and he took off the small crown necklace adorning his neck. "Here, a good luck charm, so you always know I'll be there," He said, placing the necklace on Little Sora's neck instead.
Sora recited the next line with Little Sora as he felt the memory finally slot itself into place with his mind. "From now on, I'll bring you good luck too. I'll keep you safe, Riku!"
The meteor shower slowed down, and Little Riku decided to race Little Sora back towards the boats. Being faster than him, Little Riku was very far away when Little Sora noticed something in the tree.
Sora climbed his way down after being spotted and came face to face with his younger self. He used to be so tiny back then, Sora felt himself tear up at how large the crown necklace looked against his chest.
Little Sora gasped. "You're me!" He cried.
"Yep, I'm you, but I gotta get going soon and so do you," Sora responded.
"Wait, before you go, I just got one question," Little Sora said, twisting a foot into the sand, "does my wish come true?"
Sora took a moment to remember exactly what he had wished for before bending down and removing the necklace to show Little Sora that he had kept it, and Little Sora had removed his own to compare. Upon realizing they were the same, Little Sora shouted a quick thanks before running away to tell Little Riku the good news, though he wouldn't believe him.
Sora turned towards the mainland, watching one of the meteors strike the ground with a blazing glory. Little Riku and Little Sora were already on their way home, unaware of how much their lives were going to change from this moment forward, and Sora was fully aware that his time was up here in the past.
It was time to go back to the future to tell Riku the fantastic news.
