Work Text:

“Yeah, just like that! Only do it better.”

“Oh shut up and help me like you promised!”

Sora had become a proficient mage over the years from traveling with Donald, but Riku did not have the same opportunity to learn from a worlds-class mage. Now that both Sora and Riku were considered keyblade masters, Yen Sid thought that it was appropriate for Sora to give Riku some magic lessons.

Riku was quick to learn the different tiers of Fire and what he could do with it, especially as it was so close to Dark Firaga. By the end of their first magic lesson, Riku was surrounding himself in fireballs and shooting them at long ranged targets with complete precision. It was the end of their second magic lesson that he was running into some trouble.

“Come on Riku, try to jump and cast Blizzard at the same time. You can do it!”

“I feel like you’re setting me up for failure.”

For some reason, Blizzard Magic and Water Magic seemed to be large weak spots for Riku. He could cast them just fine when standing still and focusing on the magic, but moving around and accurately hitting his targets felt physically impossible. His aim felt completely off, he struggled to jump and conjure the spells at the same time, and he simply could not stand the sight of Sora doing a cartwheel while casting Waterga.

Riku’s cheeks burned as he tried jumping and casting Blizzard, but instead landed straight into a muddy patch created from their constant magic use. His pants were caked in grime almost immediately, and the only thing keeping Riku from rage quitting was the fact that his boyfriend was simply better at something than he was. He may have walked the way to dawn, became a keyblade master, and exhausted every single option to save Sora from the depths of Quadratum, but his competitive nature was still just as strong as when he was fifteen and snarky about it.

Sora finally stopped laughing at him before coming over and kneeling down right in the mud, getting his knee dirty alongside Riku. “I know I made fun of you this whole time, but I really do mean that you can do it. Ready to give it another go?” He asked, extending his hand to Riku.

Immediately, Sora received a nod and a hand shoving him over so that he’d land right on his behind, much to his own shock and amusement. Riku let out a small chuckle before shaking his head and getting serious, standing up and brushing some dust off his shoulders

He summoned his keyblade and readied his stance. He could already feel the magic coursing through his veins as he eyed his target. It was a wooden “heartless” that Kairi made for target practice. Somehow she figured out a way to make it move.

He took a breath before charging, knowing that the target was going to jump into the air. Riku eyed its legs as they bent like a spring before he himself did the same, shouting “Blizzard” as he did. An ice crystal shot from the top of the keyblade, leaving a misty trail in its wake as it approached the enemy.

It missed by a hair.

Riku let out a shout of frustration, willing the keyblade to disappear before he had the chance to throw it on the ground. He didn’t really care about how childish he looked. “Why can’t I just get this!” He shouted.

Sora approached and put a hand on his arm, quelling the flames of aggravation from igniting the entire training ground. “Sometimes you just don’t get things on the first try. You should have seen the first time I tried using Thundaga. I accidentally electrocuted Donald,” Sora said, chuckling a little at the memory, “but look at me now! I’m a keyblade master and a certified mage!”

Riku let out a sigh at that, wrapping an arm around Sora as he cooled off. “I know, I’m just not used to being as bad at things as you are,” he teased, earning a playful elbow to the gut.
The two decided that a small break was in order, just so that they could restore their mana and get some food in their stomachs.

“I still can’t believe you survived falling off a cliff.”

“You saw me slice a skyscraper in half, what are you even talking about!”

And of course, they bantered the entire time.
