Chapter Text
Kris was alone in their room gaming the Friday away, occasionally looking at their watch to check the time. Last time they checked it was around 1:49 in the afternoon. The school year was close to ending for them and their classmates, and it had already ended for the high school seniors, since the seniors always finished about one month early with all the graduation ceremonies and procedures that needed to be done. One of which…was prom night.
It didn’t take a genius for anyone to know that Asriel was going to take Dess. After all, she was their brother’s girlfriend. Who the hell else was it going to be? Though Kris did briefly reminisce about catching Catty trying to ask Asriel to go with her, which he declined in the most polite way possible. However, it still took every ounce in Kris’s body not to walk over and punch him in the shoulder when they saw how Asriel struggled to say no. Asriel was known for the occasional small stutter when he was nervous, and that was one of those times, which garnered an amused reaction from the chubby purple cat. I swear, Kris thought, you’re too nice for your own good sometimes. You’re lucky it was Catty. Bratty would NOT have taken a no for an answer.
Kris’s thoughts were interrupted by a ring to the house’s doorbell. Perfect, they thought.
The human grinned to themself when they paused their game and went downstairs, hurriedly making it to the front door and looking through the peephole to see their childhood best friend, a small, polite doe with long blonde hair and a red and green V-neck sweater. Noelle Holiday had her hands on her back, a pensive expression on her face while she waited for the doorbell to be answered, which Kris did.
“Hey, you made it!” Kris smiled and motioned inside. “Come in!”
The two young teens went back inside the Dreemurr house, wasting no time to get back inside Kris and Asriel’s shared room. Asriel was currently hanging out with Pizzapants and a couple of other friends, most likely in a DnD session, Kris figured, and Toriel was still working at the Hometown church, so Kris had the whole house to themself after coming home from school.
When Noelle sat down criss-crossed on the floor, Kris did the same next to her, clapping the palms of their hands together once as they began speaking.
“Okay, let’s just get to the point,” Kris asserted. “Prom night is tomorrow night. My brother and your sister. A hugely important day for them. I want to make sure it’s perfect.”
Noelle raised an eyebrow, putting a hand to her mouth before giggling. “Fahahaha, Kris! I didn’t know you cared that much. I didn’t take you for a romantic,” she admitted. It was true! Kris was a proud aro/ace ever since middle school started, so sappy romance wasn’t something they had any experience with, let alone any interest in. But perhaps more importantly, Kris was known to be a mischievous little gremlin, so to see them take matters into their own hands so seriously to make sure their brother gets the best night of his life was quite the weird whiplash.
Kris shot her a playful glare, only masked by the long bangs covering their eyes and casting a shadow over their face. “Surprise surprise, even I find joy in seeing other people happy sometimes.” The human then smiled genuinely. “I may not be interested in what they have, but it’s still really sweet to watch sometimes, ya know? And despite all the shit we pull on each other and the fact he’s in a relationship, Asriel is still there for me when I need him. All the time. I need to repay that somehow. Whatever it takes.”
Noelle was taken aback by the heartfelt response, but it made her smile so much that her heart filled with pride for her best friend. She didn’t know this little demon of a human was capable of caring so much for other people, but she wasn’t complaining.
“And I can use this as blackmail over him,” Kris grinned deviously. There it was. “What we’re doing will serve as a great reminder that I was a big reason why his night was so great. Then he’ll have to do me favors. Like sneaking in extra QC fries into our room for me to chow on when Mom’s not looking. Or taking the blame for me if I get in trouble. OR do my homework!”
“Riiiiight…” Noelle’s smile remained, but her eyes widened at Kris’s blunt intentions. “But well, you still haven’t told me what we’re doing!”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Kris responded. “We make them Prom King and Queen! We rig the system so they win no matter what!”
“And how exactly are we going to do that???” Noelle asked with the most puzzled expression on her face.
Kris looked pensive for a minute, before finally giving her an answer. “I don’t know… We could try replacing the voting slips with ones marked for Asriel and Dess when no one’s looking… All we need to do is make blank copies of them and check different boxes. Basic, but it works!”
Noelle nodded, but still had an eyebrow raised. “I know that. I’m saying how are we gonna go to the school without them noticing us?”
Kris rubbed their hands together while giggling. “I overheard Asriel say he was going to borrow Dad’s truck since he gave it to us some time ago. Mom’s in on the plan too. She’s going to make the excuse that I’m going with her to one of her school friends’ wedding, and that’s why I’ll be in a dress. And right when Azzy gets in the car, I sneak in the back of the truck! All that’s left is for you and Susie to hide somewhere outside and do the same thing. The three of us will hide inside the back of the truck until we get there.”
Noelle’s face was perplexed. To say the plan was crazy was being nice about it. Kris was batshit insane. “Kris!? You don’t mean to tell me that’s REALLY the pla-”
The two were interrupted by the ring of the doorbell once again, this time accompanied by a couple of knocks. Noelle’s face lit up when she realized who it was, and hurriedly ran down the stairs to answer the door. Kris followed behind her, stopping at the top of the stairs looking down at the front door to see the new guest. It was their former bully turned best friend, and Noelle’s girlfriend, Susie. The doe threw herself at the purple lizard with the biggest hug ever, giggling like a schoolgirl. Susie laughed a bit herself before planting a kiss on the top of her head.
“I’m so glad you made it!” Noelle said to Susie. “Me and Kris were just talking about the plan!”
“You know me, Noelle,” Susie said with her arms on Noelle’s shoulders before looking up at Kris at the stairs. “I’ll do anything to help my best friend and their brother.” Susie complemented this with a straight middle finger to Kris, which they happily returned with a smirk. To others, it might look weird, but to them, that was one way they greeted each other. Flipoffs like this between the two became affectionate rather than insulting, and it was a testament to how close they had grown together since they reconciled after all the ridicule Kris has gone through. Susie could not have been more grateful to this human for giving her that second chance.
The trio made it to Kris’s room again, and upon catching Susie up on the plan, Susie laughed heartily, holding her stomach and face knowing how sentimental the whole plan was getting, which wasn’t like Kris usually.
“You possessed or something, Kris???” Susie laughed.
It was funny the first time, but the bit was starting to get old for the human. “Yeah yeah, I can get sentimental and love seeing my brother happy, rub it in why don’t ya…”
“Hahahahahaha, okay! Alright okay,” Susie took as deep a breath as she could to calm down. “First thing’s first, good plan, great plan.” She playfully punched Kris’s arm. “I can’t wait to see your brother’s face when he realizes the three of us are there, it’s going to be priceless, I know it!!!”
“But!” she continued, “...we can’t stop it there! If you truly want to make it an unforgettable night for those two lovebirds dude, you gotta do more than just stick to the Prom King and Queen thing. You gotta do something special for them, and only for them.”
“And…what do you suggest eh?” Kris asked.
“Heheheh,” Susie rubbed her nose with a finger in pure, oozing confidence. “Noelle, you mind if we borrow your sister’s instruments?”
“Wait, you don’t mean…” Noelle’s eyes shot open. She was shocked at first, but then realizing what Susie was implying, her face lit up with so much excitement it was contagious. “You mean that we’ll…!!”
“Oh fuck yeah,” Susie confirmed with a wink and a hand on her girlfriend’s shoulder. “This isn’t going to be your run of the mill slow dance, Elly. Far from it.”
The trio of friends were getting giddy with excitement at how quickly and perfectly their little plan was starting to take shape. They were going to give it their all to execute it well. And by the end of tomorrow night, Asriel and Dess would be thanking them for giving them the best night a high school couple could ever ask for.
…
Asriel was in the middle of getting ready to pick Dess up for prom. He wore the standard black tuxedo with black pants, and all that was left was to put on the green and yellow striped necktie. Luckily, Toriel was there to help him, both of them standing in front of the mirror with Toriel behind him adjusting the tie so it was at the right height, the tip landing in the middle of the buckle of his belt.
“Keep your cell phone turned on at ALL times, you hear me? I don’t want a single missed call!” Toriel reminded her son with a stern, motherly tone of voice.
“Yeeesss Mooom…” Asriel replied with a deadpan voice, knowing the usual reminder checklist before going out somewhere was coming. He knew she did this out of love and to make sure he was safe, but it didn’t make it any less of a slog to go through. Though part of his impatience was definitely due to wanting to see Dess already.
“Pay close attention when you order a drink!” she continued. “You don’t want to get roofied!”
“Yeeesss Mooom…”
“And be a gentleman, okay? Goes without saying, but open the doors for her! Ask her if she needs anything. I hope I gave you enough to pay for anything extra…”
“Yeeesss Mooom…”
Toriel then turned her son around to face him after the necktie was put in its place. She put one hand on his shoulder, and another on his face. She smiled warmly, admiring how handsome her son looked in a tux. It seemed like just yesterday that she held her precious golden boy in her arms as a little baby with a pacifier, and now he was graduating high school, about to dance and have the best night of his life with the love of his life. It made her heart so full that she was unable to hold back tearing up, her voice quivering when she spoke.
“My baby boy,” Toriel sobbed slightly. “Why did you have to grow up so fast…”
Despite Asriel’s exasperation at his mother’s incessant instructions just now, he couldn’t stay annoyed forever. He smiled wide at the comment and pulled his mother’s head in to kiss the top of her head. “It’s okay mom,” he said. “I’ll still love you even when I’m 90.”
Toriel rested her head on her son’s neck and shoulder, wrapping her arms around him in the biggest, hardest hug imaginable. “I know, I know,” she agreed. “It’s just…sometimes I wish I could turn back time and experience it all over again. It seems like it was only a few hours ago that you’d ask to sleep in our bed when you had a bad dream…”
She pulled back and sized her son up with her hands on his shoulders. “And now look at you. You’re becoming a man, with a beautiful girlfriend and everything…about to dance with her no less.” Toriel couldn’t help but laugh as a thought crossed her mind. “I feel so old saying this, but at this rate you’ll show up tomorrow with my grandkids!”
Asriel blushed at the comment and protested. “MOOOM!!! You can’t just say stuff like that!” He was met with a hearty laugh from his mother, but when it all calmed down, he smiled again and caressed her cheek.
“In all seriousness, I couldn’t have gotten to where I am without you. You’ve supported me, inspired me, helped me, showed me everything I should know. How to walk without your hands. I love Dess, Mom, but you…you’re the reason I’m even here. You’re the best mom in the whole world, and anyone who says otherwise has room temperature IQ.”
“Please Azzy!” Toriel hiccuped, now sobbing. “You’re making me cry here…”
“A-a-ah-ahemmmmm…” a familiar voice cleared their throat loudly on purpose. It startled the two goats, who turned to see Kris clad in a sparkling emerald green dress. Toriel wiped her tears, while Asriel looked at his sibling with shock.
“Holy…what happened??? Did I miss something? What’s the occasion?” he asked.
“Sorry, sorry,” Toriel replied after composing herself. “One of my old friends from all the way back in school in Ebott City is actually getting married! And she’s been dying to have Kris come, so I’ve been trying to pick out a dress for them the last couple days!”
“Mom, could you please hurry up? I wanna get this over with!” Kris complained. They were making sure to keep up the lie as well as possible with some good acting. There was no wedding; like Kris told Noelle and Susie before, it was all a cover story they both agreed on to avoid suspicion from Asriel, so that when he was in Asgore’s truck and not looking, Kris would sneak in the back of the truck to go with him to prom to surprise him and Dess. Kris’s little complaint helped sell this lie by making it sound like this dinner would be an absolute bore, which if it was real, it would be.
Toriel cleared her own throat before responding in a stern voice. “Now Kris, I expect you to show respect to the people who invited you over, okay? Watch that tone of voice.” Toriel suppressed the urge to wink, while Kris played the part further by simply rolling their eyes, earning a fake but believable sigh from their mother.
“I see,” Asriel smirked, buying the story completely. “Well, sucks to be you dude!”
“I will end you,” Kris spat back.
“AHEM,” Toriel cleared her throat, before giving her son the stare. “Asriel, shouldn’t you be going somewhere?”
“Yeah, you’re right, you’re right,” he accepted. Asriel then kissed his mother on the cheek one more time and ran to the front door of the house, grabbing the car keys from the dining table. “See ya later Mom! Have fun at the wedding!”
They both waved when Asriel got out the house, and looked out the window to make sure he got inside the car. Once he did, Toriel opened a window at the side of the house for Kris to escape through, and crouched down a bit to hug them for a couple of seconds. “Do your thing, my child. Have fun, and make your brother happy,” she said. “And please be really careful. Stay by your brother and Dess’s side at all times.”
“I will Mom, I promise,” Kris reassured her before jumping out. They made sure to hold up the dress slightly with their fingertips to not let it slide across the ground, and hid behind the tree just behind Asgore’s truck, squinting their eyes to look inside the windows. Noticing Asriel was jamming to music inside, they knew that was the time to make their move. Swiftly and like a ninja, Kris ran up to the back of the truck and swiftly vaulted over, throwing themself inside and laying low just before Asriel took off.
Operation “make Asriel and Dess’s prom night perfect” was now in full swing.
…
A few minutes later, Asriel had arrived in front of the Holiday mansion, with a clear plastic box containing a golden flower corsage in hand. He rang the doorbell and waited patiently for anyone to answer. Sure enough, he was met with the jovial face of Rudy, Dess’s father and his own father’s best friend. Rudy’s smile grew even wider when he saw his self-proclaimed future son-in-law, and quickly clasped Asriel’s hand firmly to shake it.
“Asriel, buddy!” Rudy greeted. “No need for explanations am I right?” Rudy felt Asriel’s hand grip his extremely firmly, which was something to acknowledge. “Damn, you got some grip! All that track running wasn’t for nothing, I see, haha!”
Asriel chuckled at Rudy’s contagious positivity. Arguably one of the biggest perks of dating your childhood best friend is that you get to skip over the awkwardness of meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Thanks to this, it wasn’t much of a problem when he and Dess confirmed to him that they were in a relationship.
“Heh, thanks,” Asriel finally thanked sheepishly. “No pressure obviously, but is Dess ready?”
“She should be any minute now. Come inside!” Rudy gestured.
Asriel stepped inside the mansion with no further ado, and as soon as Rudy closed the door, Kris’s head popped out the back of Asgore’s truck, and they began whisper-screaming.
“Susie! Susie!! Come on, it’s now or never, before they come out!!!”
Susie popped her head out one of the bushes in front of the mansion, and upon seeing Kris’s outstretched arm, she ran as quickly as she could towards them holding a snare drum. She was wearing a tuxedo of her own, including a black bow tie. Noelle had gifted it to her about a month prior for her birthday, and although Susie wasn’t much for formal clothing or lifestyle, it was Noelle’s gift, and that was enough for her to cherish it with her life. She’d been wanting an excuse to use it, whether a date with her or something else, and now was a better time than ever.
A few more back and forth runs ended up in them loading the truck with a complete drum kit and two guitars, one electric and one acoustic, the latter being Dess’s favorite guitar that Noelle entrusted to Susie a few hours ago. Susie then got inside the back of the truck with Kris and laid low with them, with all that was left being to play the waiting game for Noelle.
…
By now, the Holiday mansion felt like a second home to Asriel, so he wasted no time getting acquainted with a place he was already familiar with and instead politely took a seat on the large couch in the center of the mansion, waiting patiently for his date. His mind began to ruminate on what Dess’s plan was for a dress. She never did tell him what she was going to wear after all.
Angel, she’s gonna look like a princess, he thought, closing his eyes and imagining Dess in the most gorgeous dress he could think of, as if he was awaiting his bride. Nah, on second thought probably not. Maybe she went with something more mature? Or perhaps even something non-traditional? How much time has passed. Can it pass any damn faster???
Meanwhile, upstairs in Noelle’s room, she was helping Dess get ready for her date. Dess was sitting down, her eyes closed as Noelle finished out the makeup. Whereas many girls would overuse it, complete with blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, you name it; Dess, and by extension Noelle, knew Asriel well enough to know that as corny as it sounded, he appreciated his love’s beauty the most when she made herself look good for herself, rather than for anybody else. In short, less was more.
That’s why in the end, Dess simply settled for some foundation and a very slight blush. It was a simple yet effective complement to the main draw of the eye, which was her dress. Fitting her rowdiness, it was wine red-colored (she’d like to say blood red, but wine red sounded more classy to anyone who asked), and she even wore red opera gloves on her arms that went up to her elbows. Besides that, she also had black earrings on her ears, as well as a black heart-shaped locket that Asriel had gifted to her on one of their dates. Inside the locket was a miniature photo of them sitting together in the autumn leaves, as well as a small slip of paper that simply read “I’m with you in the dark forever ❤️”.
Once everything was done, she stood up from her seat and posed for Noelle, one hand on her hip as one of her red slippers showed slightly. “Alright Elly, how do I look?” she asked.
“Incredible,” Noelle confirmed with a single clap of her hands. “Oh Angel he’s going to melt at the sight of you, faha!”
“You think so?” Dess tried to make sure. The answer was obvious, but hearing it out loud was going to make her smile even more, and she wanted that.
“I know so.” Noelle asserted.
…
“Anything I can serve you while you wait, Azzy?” Rudy asked as he was looking inside the fridge. “I got some vodka, wine, maybe straight up beer if you want.”
“Oh I-I can’t drink,” Asriel quickly dismissed. “I’m not 21 yet, gotta wait 3 more years for that. Besides, I’m driving.”
Rudy popped his head out the fridge and winked at Asriel, grinning at him and pointing a finger at him with the hand that was holding his glass of beer. “That’s the right answer, kid.”
“Dad? Is Azzy here?” Noelle spoke from upstairs. She was wearing a dress of her own, a white one that fit her love for the snow and winter, as well as diamond-colored ear piercings and a deep blue pendant resting above her chest. Her face lit up when she saw Asriel, and she ran down the stairs to give him a hug. “Azzy, you’re here!!!” she squealed.
Asriel chuckled and ruffled her hair a bit; despite her being 15, not that much younger than him or Dess, she was still a pretty short girl. “Heyyy Noelle!” he said. “Wow, you look amazing… Something going on?”
“Oh, I’m…going on a date with Susie actually,” she lied. “She’s apparently taking me out somewhere fancy. I didn’t expect it at all, but I’m so excited I can’t even think!”
“Already giving off a good impression to your old man with how well she’s treating you. I like that,” Rudy commented while leaning back on the wall and sipping on his drink. “You got yourself a keeper Elly.”
“Daaad, fahaha!” Noelle laughed. She turned around and yelled up the stairs. “Dess, your date’s here! Come down here!”
“Alright, alright, coming!”
Finally, Asriel thought. The wait felt so agonizing. Dess, please come down already and let me look at you, I’ve been waiting to see you in a dress and give you this corsage for hou- oh…
Oh…
Oh…my…Angel…
No…she IS the Angel…
Asriel felt time slow down everywhere around him, and he tried (and failed) to not let his jaw drop as much as it did. He gulped, his face going redder than a tomato, when he saw Dess stop hiding behind the wall and walk down the stairs to reveal her prom attire in all its unrivaled beauty. Dess’s genuine, loving smile turned into a fight to hold back a chuckle when she saw her boyfriend’s reaction; she could’ve sworn she saw love hearts form in his eyes or even his heart beat through his clothing like a Looney Tunes character.
When she finally stood in front of him, she couldn’t hold back the giggle anymore. “Azzy? You still with us?”
“That’s really…” Asriel began. “I mean…wow I, oh my…holy…” Marry me, please. I want to father so many kids with you oh my Angel you’re so beautiful.
“What’s wrong, pretty boy, cat got your tongue?” Dess said as she put a hand on her hip and smirked. “You’re not seriously telling me I look bad in this, are you?”
“NO!” Asriel said this way louder than he intended, almost startling Noelle before she giggled. “Nononono! I didn’t say that! Not at all! That’s a lie… You look…you look…”
“Fahaha, I’m just fucking with you, dummy,” Dess laughed, putting a hand on his cheek and kissing his forehead. “I know what you want to say. No need for words.”
She’s the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen in my life…has my entire life until this point just been a dream??? “Y-Yeah…uhh…yeah, haha…” Asriel agreed. “I…oh lord…”
“A-hem!” Noelle cleared her throat, prompting Asriel to look her way. Noelle, with a silent head gesture, signaled with her eyes to give Dess the corsage, and Asriel quickly forced himself to come to his senses. Having accomplished her mission, Noelle then excused herself from the area to head upstairs once again, leaving the two lovebirds alone with Rudy watching with a smile on his face.
“RIGHT! Right!” Asriel gave the box with the corsage to Dess. “Sorry, Dess. Here you go!”
Dess happily took the plastic box holding the corsage and opened it. She sniffed the golden flower for a moment, taking in its pleasant smell, and placed it on her wrist. “It’s lovely,” she confirmed. Rudy then gave her daughter a matching golden flower buttonhole, which Dess placed on the lapel of Asriel’s tux, finally making them have matching decorations on their outfits.
“Alright, you know what’s comin’ next,” Rudy said. “Photo time! Come on you two, get together, right there below the Christmas wreath on the door.”
The couple did as instructed, standing side by side and holding each other by the waist as they smiled for Rudy’s camera. Dess leaned her head against Asriel’s shoulder, and clicks and shutters echoed in the room as Rudy took a bunch of photos. In one of them, Dess sneaked a kiss on Asriel’s cheek, which made his smile grow even wider somehow in said photo.
“Alright, I think we’ve wasted enough time here,” Rudy said as he put away the camera. “I’ll send these to your mother later, Azzy. You two have fun, alright? And do stay safe.”
Asriel grinned and put a hand on his hip, oozing with hilarious confidence. “I’ll have her back by 10 P.M., Mr. Holiday, sir,” he promised.
Dess simply laughed out loud at the promise, holding her stomach. She was glad she didn’t put on eyeliner or eyeshadow, because all the laughing left her crying. “No Azzy! Stop, please, I can’t breathe, fahaha!!!”
Rudy responded by smiling back and pointing finger guns at his daughter. “You best keep that boy safe too, haha!”
“I will, I will, okay?” Dess said back, calming down a bit. And with that, Dess and Asriel interlocked arms like a bride and groom and headed towards the front door, ready to have the best night in their entire teenage lives.
…
Noelle made sure no one was looking for her while Dess and Asriel were in the middle of their little photoshoot, and she opened the window of her room, feeling the nighttime breeze hit her and her snow white dress. With utmost care, she slowly stuck more of her body outward, before finally jumping down into the grass and landing on her hooves, having snuck out of her house successfully. She circled around the mansion while laying low, making sure to not make too much noise, and sure enough, when she arrived at the front, Asgore’s truck was waiting in front of the mansion. Kris and Susie signaled her to hurry up, and Noelle did so, running like a ninja and being pulled up by Susie, landing inside the cargo bed.
“Nice! You made it!” Susie whispered excitedly while hugging her girlfriend laying down.
“That was intense,” Noelle remarked, “I was so afraid of getting caught.”
“But you didn’t,” Kris asserted. “And besides, even if you were, it’s not like you would’ve gotten in trouble. But what’s important is that all is going according to plan.”
“Guys, lay low, they’re coming!!” Susie whisper-screamed, and the trio laid horizontally on the cargo bed to avoid detection. For good measure, they also closed the top covering of the cargo bed, leaving them in pitch-black darkness.
Meanwhile, Asriel and Dess were walking to the truck, arm in arm. Opening the door for Dess, she happily got on the passenger seat using Asriel’s hand for grip, before Asriel got in the driver seat himself.
“Anything you wanna listen to on the way there?” Asriel asked while connecting his phone.
“Duh, put on our playlist!” Dess requested, putting on her seatbelt. “We always play that, and it never fails with the first track!”
“Haha, you have a point. Alright, bet.”
Asriel went on the shared playlist he and Dess created for the two of them, which had so many different kinds of music all compiled into a playlist that reached the thousands of songs. Everything ranging from religious ska and game soundtracks to hardcore and even death metal. But he listened to Dess’s request and turned on shuffle on the playlist before finally starting it.
“HELL YEAH! I LOVE THIS ONE!!!” Dess celebrated. “Turn it up! Turn it up!”
Asriel obeyed, turning up the volume slightly louder to Dess’s satisfaction. It was clear that Dess’s inner musician always won over at times like these, since she began singing the lyrics with all her might.
(Camilo - “Favorito”)
They went on their way to the school, vibing intensely at the banger that played. Asriel eventually joined in as well, singing his heart out with his right hand slapping the wheel to the beat, while Dess slid the car windows down to blast the music for everyone (who was awake at least) to hear.
This is going to be the best night ever, he thought. And he wouldn’t be wrong in the slightest, having no idea what was in store for both of them.
