Chapter 1: Lena

Chapter Text

“Hey, uh, Bluey?”

Dewey turned around to look at Lena. “Eh?”

“Pink said that you, uh, have experience with, like, body…stuff—?”

His eyes widened. “Ooooh! Mhm, come on in!”

He waved her (them?) into his room and began digging through his closet.

“What’s your problem?”

“Well, I’m kinda getting used to having a real body again, but it doesn’t really…feel right, I guess?”

He paused.

“Yeah, I get that,” he glanced over his shoulder. “Kind of like you’re an animal at the zoo. It feels…confining,”

“I—yeah, yeah, that’s—that’s a good way of putting it,”

After a moment of silence, Dewey pulled a list from the mess with an excited aha!

He turned to the teenager, clicking a pen that he’d found somewhere a couple of times.

“So! You said you feel like you’re in the wrong body, right?”

Lena nodded. “Uh—yeah?”

“Mmm, interesting, interesting,” He nodded. “Would you rather be a boy?”

They? shook their? head.

“Hmm…” Dewey hummed, tapping his chin. “Oh, I know—have you ever heard of the term non-binary?”

Lena tilted their? head to the side in confusion, shaking it softly.

“Basically, it’s where people aren’t she’s or he’s, they’re they’s,”

“People can…do…that?”

He nodded vigorously. “Mhm! I did it—not entirely the same, but kind of! I was a girl—” he wrinkled his beak jokingly. “—but now I’m a boy! Well, I’ve always been a boy, it just took a little bit for me to realize,”

“…huh,”

“There’s a lot of options!” He said. “You can basically use any pronouns you want! Or no pronouns, if you’d prefer that!”

Lena blinked. “That’s—wow, that—I…can—can I…try it out?”

“Sure! Wanna see a list of pronouns?”

The older duck nodded, sitting down cross-legged on the floor. He handed them? a clipboard and a pencil. “Just circle the ones you’re interested in and we can try them!”

Lena spent a few minutes thinking and circling, before handing the clipboard back. He glanced down, taking note of the ones Lena circled.

Dewey clapped his hands. “Okay! Let’s do this!”

“I just met this person, and ze seem really cool! Zir name is Lena! I wish I could be as cool as them!”

Lena’s heart fluttered, and their face lifted.

“Alrighty, next one! I hope you didn’t have plans today!”

“You know that I don’t,”

“Yep!”

Several hours later, Lena left the triplets’ room, wearing a shirt that said My eggshell cracked and all I got was this dumb shirt and a big smile on their face.
