And suddenly, he felt this rush of affection that bloomed in time to become much more than he had promised himself. He knew there was something more. He couldn't put it on the kid's shoulders; he was too young and grieving. Everything was changing right before his eyes, and Dick didn't have the heart to do anything but comfort the little one. He did anything he could: soft words and reassurances, long-lasting hugs, fleeting and comforting touches, together with headpats and kisses on the crown of the kid's head. He almost acted like he was the father.
So it wasn't strange to see Damian asking for more attention at the end of patrolling. It actually became a norm for them to cuddle up in bed together and then fall asleep. Dick always made sure that nothing… Too intimate happened, and that was it.
What was strange, however, was how Damian was nervously staring at him from behind the doorframe, almost as if he wasn't sure he was going to be welcomed.
