Summary
In order to claim his birthright, a lord-prince of Zhentil Keep— son and heir of a seated Council Lord— must first prove his worth. Manshoon of Zhentil Keep, elder son of First Lord Harlshoon, is bound and determined to claim his father's throne, no matter the cost. When his quest goes catastrophically awry, circumstances force him to chart a new course: the Art of magic, which his father forbade him learn, and a self-driven quest that leads still further from home. But his mother's legacy is no safer to claim, and in pursuit of this power he faces greater danger than he could ever have dreamed.
In Zhentil Keep, tension rises in the Dark Shrine of Bane; Mulmaster, seat of the faith, grows impatient with the heresy that has been allowed to bloom within the church— and that impatience could prove deadly. Meanwhile a political storm brews in the Council of Lords, one whose rumblings threaten to shake Zhentil Keep's nobility to their foundations.
