Summary
To Sir Hwang Hyunjin, Knight-Protector of Prince Seungmin of Goyang, life functioned much like clockwork.
He rose at dawn, exactly one hour before His Highness, and waited at his post until the prince deemed the day ready enough to begin. He followed Seungmin through marble corridors and quiet gardens, ran him through daily self-defence drills, and trained alone when time allowed.
More often than not, he watched, and he painted. Just like the sword he had bled to hold, charcoal felt like an extension of himself.
It was good, and it was fine. There was little to anticipate when guarding a prince who preferred shade to sunlight and books to crowds. Hyunjin could predict Seungmin’s movements as easily as the wind’s direction, could read the shape of his own days like a story long committed to memory. Perhaps one day he would marry a low-born noble, sire a few pups, inherit his father’s barony as expected. Life begun at Dohwa, and it would end there.
And though he had been trained to expect the unexpected, Hyunjin could never have foreseen it coming in the form of Prince Jeongin of Silla—or the way everything would unravel in his wake.
