Work Text:

There was a time when this was unthinkable.

Shawn and Henry, sitting in the back garden, sharing a nice, cold beer. the sound of the waves slapping against the sand mingled with the mosquitos buzzing about, both a pleasant backdrop to the sounds of chatter and laughter coming from inside the house.

It was nice of Lassiter to invite them around for a pre-Christmas lunch, though Shawn half-suspected the invite was Marlowe's doing.

Shawn sipped his beer and looked around.

It wasn't their back garden any more. Lassie bought the house a few months ago now, but to Shawn this place would always feel like home.

He had no idea what this place felt like to his father. Henry, who was also taking slow and measured sips, had barely said anything about the house. Shawn looked at him out of the corner of his eye.

There were still many things unsaid between them. Shawn was still itching to press Henry's buttons, and he could tell his father was eager to make some sort of comment about Shawn's life.

But they buried those urges, neither of them wanting to be the first one to ruin the moment.

But still...

"Did you see what Lassie did to the bathroom?" Shawn asked.

"Oh my God!" Henry all but shouted, relief coming off him in waves. "Yes! It's atrocious. I have half a mind to re-neg on this deal and take the place back."

Shawn laughed. God, it was good to not be on Henry's bad side, but to join him in his protestations.

"If that's what he thinks good design is, I shudder to think of what he'll do to the kitchen."
