Summary:

June stops a hurricane. It's not a big deal.

Notes:

Sorry for not posting recently! I got eaten by a lion.

This was originally going to be one part of a larger piece, but that one is slow in the works and this segment of it is complete.

As you may or may not have noticed, I've reorganized these fics a bit. I was unsatisfied with The Tale of a Cruel World and felt like it didn't fit in with Mirage Unto Herself, so I've sort of exiled it to a second series dedicated to mostly complete fics that I don't like for one reason or another. That other series is named Burning Men's Soul, and it is not canon to Mirage Unto Herself.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A group of meteorologists somehow got into contact with June, pleading for help with a hurricane. She went off to prevent the hurricane from ripping through populated areas.
That was nine hours ago. You haven't heard from her since. Needless to say, you are worried sick. You've been letting out your anxiety on the innocent wooden furniture throughout the house, leaving deep claw marks.
She'll be fine. She is going into a dangerous situation to perform an undeniably heroic deed, but she's going to be fine. She's the goddess of breath, for crying out loud. Surely, your seer powers would have kicked in and told you to stop her if your girlfriend was about to go get herself killed. It's fine. It's not happening again. It's-
You hear the front door open.

JUNE: hey rose! i'm b-

She's interrupted as you zoom up and give her a tight hug. She goes stiff for a moment in surprise before reciprocating your hug. Her clothes are wet, and she's cold to the touch.

JUNE: hey! what's up?
ROSE: I'm glad that you're safe.
JUNE: oh.
JUNE: oh! i'm sorry, i should have called you as soon as i was done. it didn't occur to me that you'd worry.
ROSE: Really? It didn't occur to you that I'd worry a little about my girlfriend going off to stop a hurricane?
JUNE: i didn't really... think it was a big deal?
ROSE: *snort*
ROSE: You are remarkable, June.
JUNE: heh, damn right.
JUNE: so, can i come in?
ROSE: Of course.

You make zero efforts to remove yourself from her. She sighs as she realizes what you're doing. You giggle as she hobbles inside and closes the door, her mobility significantly hampered by the catgirl latched onto her. Eventually, she makes her way to the couch and plops down. You reposition yourself so that you're sitting in her lap.

ROSE: Why did it take you so long to get from the door to the couch?
JUNE: you're ridiculous.
ROSE: Excuse me? You are freezing cold. Do you not feel yourself shivering? I cannot, in good conscious, deprive you of my body warmth.

You are actually starting to get cold yourself, so you grab a blanket to wrap around the both of you.

ROSE: So, how did you do it?
JUNE: uh... well, first, they had to figure out the storm's velocity, where the eye of the storm was, and the direction it was going. th-
ROSE: In that order?
JUNE: huh?
ROSE: If they knew the velocity of the storm, then they knew what direction the storm was headed as well.
JUNE: whatever! you know what i mean.
JUNE: uh, they gave me this weird ass device that had a speedometer and a compass or something? it told me what direction i should be flying in and how fast i was going, so that i could match the speed and direction of the storm and stay in the safety of the eye.
ROSE: Speed and direction, also known as velocity.
JUNE: the people with college degrees about weather stuff weren't being smartasses with me like you are!
ROSE: Of course they weren't, they were probably terrified of incurring your divine wrath.
JUNE: ...they were pretty chill about that, actually. they were respectful and didn't treat me like i was a land mine ready to go off.
ROSE: Oh, nice. So what did you actually do?
JUNE: i zapped myself into the eye of the storm. first, i tried summoning counter winds? like, wind blowing in the opposite direction of the storm. but that didn't seem to do anything.
JUNE: then i, like... i dunno, i did whatever the opposite of the windy thing is.
ROSE: Ah, of course.
JUNE: i got ambushed by reporters after, and i actually answered their questions!
ROSE: Oh! We can probably still catch it on the television.

You grab the remote and fumble with it until eventually some sort of news channel is on.

NEWS-PERSON 1: Breaking news! Hurricane Reftos, the category three hurricane that was on track to hitting New Can Town, has been dissipated by the Heir of Breath himself!

ROSE: Reftos?
JUNE: i think it's a troll name or something.

NEWS-PERSON 2: Evacuations have been called off, it is safe for New Can Town residents to return to their homes.
NEWS-PERSON 1: Now, folks, you all know how illusive and cagey the gods tend to be. I'm sure you're all expecting a complete lack of answers as to why they stepped in to stop this disaster. Well, we're pleased to say that your expectations are off. Stay tuned for an exclusive interview we held with Mr. Egbert minutes after he saved the day!

The camera feed cuts to a room filled with all sorts of weather instruments. A gust of blue wind blows through the room. Then, June materializes.

JUNE: oh my god, is that what i looked like when i got here?
ROSE: You looked significantly more put together at the door.

In the TV footage, she is soaking wet, her hair is a complete mess, and her breathing is labored.

JUNE: oh my god... the rain soaked through my god tier robes, you can totally see my bra through them!
ROSE: A pity that you chose to wear it, depriving Earth C of such a nice view.
JUNE: ...that's really flattering, but oh my god, rose.

NEWS-PERSON 1: Mr. Egbert, are you alright?
TV JUNE: uh, yeah? yeah, i'm f... fine. i feel fine, at least. what, am i bleeding or something?
NEWS-PERSON 2: No, but you look... uh...
TV JUNE: oh, right. well, you should have seen the other guy.
NEWS-PERSON 1: Mr. Egbert, we don't understand your actions today. Why go through all this effort to spare New Can Town from the storm?
TV JUNE: uh... because it was gonna destroy [EXPLETIVE] and, like, kill people? i assume? unless all the people ignoring the calls for evacuation got up and left while i wasn't looking.
NEWS-PERSON 2: So your intervention wasn't in response to the mass prayers for your forgiveness?
TV JUNE: ...huh? the what-
TV JUNE: oh, that's why there were still people in town!
TV JUNE: ok, ok, look, there seems to be a misunderstanding here.
TV JUNE: i can change the weather, but i don't control all of it.
TV JUNE: like, i'm not out here manually deciding where it does and does not rain all over earth c. this hurricane formed naturally, and i stopped it supernaturally.

That sparks a chorus of whispers among the news reporters. June on the TV shifts around uncomfortably and shivers a little. Why the fuck didn't anyone offer her a blanket or something?

NEWS-PERSON 3: So, you just chose to jump in and help for no reason?
TV JUNE: do i need a reason to save lives???
NEWS-PERSON 1: I suppose not.
NEWS-PERSON 3: We didn't think you'd be such a chill man.

June winces, both in real life and on the TV.

TV JUNE: ...i'm not a man.

Your heart stops for a moment as you process that.

ROSE: June? You came out?
ROSE: You came out to Earth C?
ROSE: That's wonderful-

NEWS-PERSON 3: I'm very sorry, Mr. Egbert, we didn't think you'd be such a chill god.
TV JUNE: ...yep. that's exactly what i meant, thank you. god...
NEWS-PERSON 3: Yes, god. I apologize.

ROSE: Oh.
JUNE: yeah. i tried, kinda.
ROSE: That fucker saw your bra and still said that.
JUNE: oh god, they were all staring at it, weren't they?
ROSE: Anyone with eyes would be. I cannot emphasize my disappointment in your choice to cover those up.
JUNE: why are you being such a peeping tom about that? you get to see them all the time!
ROSE: I get to see the sunrise all the time, too.
JUNE: babe, between the two of us, my tits are not the ones that look like a sunrise.

NEWS-PERSON 2: Mr. Egbert, we're so sorry for our associate's unprofessionalism, we-
TV JUNE: why the [EXPLETIVE] am I still here talking to you? i'm going home.

Then, she zaps away, presumably to the doorstep. The news-people start some sort of public service announcement about listening to the authorities when they tell you to evacuate. You tune them out.

JUNE: and there you have it.
JUNE: the meteorologists had a bunch of instruments and shit keeping track of how i was actually affecting the storm. they told me they're gonna analyze that data so that the next time there's a hurricane about to hit a populated area, they can just tell me what to do to stop it instead of me figuring it out by myself.
ROSE: ...
ROSE: ...You might have to do this again?
JUNE: only if people are dumb and refuse to evacuate. which will hopefully not happen again now that the people know we don't personally control everything that happens on the planet? maybe?

Or they'll be more likely to refuse evacuation now that they know the gods will swoop in and save them.

JUNE: i'll text you sooner next time!

Next time. She'll text you sooner the next time she dives into a hurricane.

She's gonna die. She's gonna die in a hurricane, and you'll be all alone again.

JUNE: ...babe? you ok?

No.

ROSE: Yes, I'm fine.
JUNE: ...
JUNE: ...ok.

Notes:

Rose is fine :)
