Chapter Text

The hand felt warm and sturdy in his own as he pulled the munchkin up from the ground. Fiyero looked the man over, the way he adjusted his ruffled outfit, his red curls, the freckles that dusted his face like stars. He watched him, mesmerized, almost completely forgetting that he was being shown around by someone else… almost.

"Fiyero Tigelaar…" He introduced himself of course, he wasn't rude. Then he tilted his head back to acknowledge the girl behind him, again, not rude, "Winkie country…" She stared at him but he quickly looked back at the other man, hanging onto his every word.

"Boq Woodsman." Boq took a step onto the books so he was eye to eye with Fiyero. Fine by him, he could see those gorgeous brown eyes better like this. "Of Munchkinland." Boq puffed out his chest, and Fiyero couldn't help but smile, completely endeared.

Though the prince didn't miss how Boq looked right past him and at the blonde behind him. Well, Fiyero wasn't sure what that feeling in his stomach was, but before he could say anything back, that particular blonde was ushering him away. Fiyero blinked, watching as his view of Boq got obscured, and his hand waved uselessly in the other's vague direction.

Well that's a shame— oh and he's here again, brilliant! Fiyero brightened up, watching as Boq was saying… something about school rules, he wasn't fully paying attention. He just watched as the man suddenly kneeled down, no longer looking at him, which made that weird feeling build up in Fiyero's stomach again that he didn't like.

Out of pure surprise by the feeling, Fiyero moved to step on the book Boq was reaching for, placing a hand on his shoulder and thank Oz, those eyes were back on him. He shook his head, gesturing for Boq to stand back up and felt downright gleeful when the man did. With all the subtly of basically no subtly, Fiyero wrapped an arm around Boq's shoulders, pulling him close.

He tilted his head down to his two companions, whispering, "I see that once again the responsibility to corrupt my fellow students… falls to me." Fiyero looked between Boq and the girl whose name he really needed to get, smiling before stepping forward.

The library was a burst of movement and whimsy, Fiyero doing what he does best and pulling the students into a whirlwind of revelry. But most importantly, that munchkin was watching him, smiling and looking excited. Fiyero smirked as he danced towards him, sauntering up and placing a couple soft touches to the man's stomach before holding his face. Oz, he could stare into that shining face for eternity if he was allowed.

Though clearly the universe didn't allow that, as he had other students to include. He was never one to let someone feel left out in his presence. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and that's really what Fiyero cared about, even if he made sure Boq had a particularly good time.

The students eventually raced out of the library, running into the sun to dance even more through the campus. However, Fiyero immediately noticed a lack of his charming new companion and spun around to jog back into the library. He paused as he watched the display unfold in front of him, Boq walking off to go talk to some other girl across the room. Alright, small hiccup, but what is the road of life with out a few bumps.

Boq was going to the Ozdust Ballroom, things were going well. Fiyero was also going to the Ozdust Ballroom, with a different person sure, but regardless, they would both be there.

♡♡♡

The party was just as electrifying as he had hoped. People were having a great time, he was leading the crowd in a dance, things were going perfect. Most importantly, Boq was there.

When the song dipped down to an end and another began, Fiyero slipped away to make his way over to Boq. He sat down next to him, the other looking surprised by this. "Hello Boq." Fiyero smiled, taking Boq's drink and sipping at it, "Having a good time?"

Boq seemed utterly confused by his sudden missing drink, but he swallowed thickly and nodded, "Oh.. oh yes, a very nice time, I…" His face scrunched up and Fiyero couldn't help but find it incredibly adorable. "It's just… there's someone here I would very much like to dance with and… I don't know if I can…"

Fiyero perked up, setting the cup on the table behind him as he watched Boq, "Oh? And who's that?"

Boq sighed as he glanced over to across the room. Fiyero followed his eye line and frowned a bit when he saw Galinda by the drinks table, chatting with those two friends of hers. Oh, right. "She's so beautiful, and perfect… I asked her to save a dance for me but…"

Fiyero took in a deep breath and grabbed the drink again, knocking the entire thing back in one swoop. "Well… if Galinda won't dance with you, how about one for me, hm? Can't bear watching you sit here all by your lonesome." He could have sworn Boq brought that one girl with him but she was nowhere to be seen.

"O-Oh, well I… I don't know…" Boq stuttered out, looking between Fiyero and the dance floor.

"Hey... no pressure, you don't have to, but…" Fiyero got up and held a hand out to Boq, "I'd be honored if you said yes."

Boq stared at Fiyero's hand, looked at his face, then back at his hand. Fiyero watched as Boq looked over at Galinda for a moment before something came over his expression and he looked back at Fiyero, "Ya know what… lets dance." He said definitively and he took Fiyero's hand, getting up.

Fiyero grinned as Boq pulled him to the dance floor and they joined in with the crowd together. They laughed and danced, grinning from ear to ear as they moved around each other.

The night passed by in a flash. So many things had happened, but Fiyero was more focused on the man he got to spend the entire night with. They were sitting next to each other on the boat ride back, Boq rambling on about the entire event as if Fiyero wasn't with him the whole time. But he didn't mind, Boq was cute all excited like this.

"It was amazing, Fiyero, thank you for convincing all of us to go." Boq said, grinning at him.

"Anytime Boq, I'm glad you had fun, we should do this again… just the two of us." Fiyero leaned in a bit more towards the other.

"Really??" Boq looked genuinely surprised and Fiyero just nodded. "Oh wow! That would be great! I've always wanted a best friend!" It was like the air cracked and shattered when Fiyero heard those words. The silence stretched out to the point that Boq started to look nervous. "Um.. if.. if it's okay to call you that? Oh Oz, it isn't, is it? Oh no, I should have known, you're a prince for Oz's sake, and I'm.. I'm just…"

Fiyero's mind raced into high gear, all thoughts of disappointment pushed aside in favor of comforting Boq. "No! No no, Boq my dear, that's not it at all, I was just a little shocked, I promise!" He rushed out the words, taking both of Boq's hands in his own, "I would be honored to be your best friend, Boq…"

Boq looked down at their hands, a dusting of pink on his cheeks before he registered the words and looked up, "You mean it??" He asked, still unsure.

"Undoubtedly." Fiyero smiled softly, hoping it would be enough to ease Boq's troubled mind.

Apparently it worked, because Boq grinned and hugged Fiyero tightly, "Oh thank you, Fiyero!"

Fiyero practically melted into the embrace, wrapping his arms around Boq and letting the warmth seep into his body. He… could work with this. Fiyero could… work with this.

Notes:

Simply I'm stuck on the fact that it's basically canon Fiyero would be too scared to confess his love to someone unless he had some inkling they felt the same way
