Shiv keeps such tight control over himself now. He has to: as the leader of the Baxter Society, there’s no room for mistakes. If there’s even a hint that he lets the beast take over, he’ll lose his authority instantly—if not also his life. It was a long, hard slog to earn his place. And he’s not going to let anything take it from him.
Drifter’s not sophisticated. He isn’t one to design elaborate psychological torments. But Shiv just makes it so easy. And he misses his playmate. How long, he wonders, can he keep dangling meat in front of Shiv before the man finally takes a bite?
