    “But that’s the way it’s always said you have to be.” Gabe once told me. “My mom tells me it’s a miracle I’m alive. I have to do something big with my life.”

    “That’s a lot of pressure.” I told him. “It’s okay to be in the background, and be insignificant for a while. Insignificant doesn’t always mean unimportant.”

    “People tell me I’m important all of the time.” Gabe had sighed, picking at the food in front of him. “I don’t always want to be.”

    At eight months old, Gabriel Goodman almost died of an intestinal blockage. Survival always comes with a price.
