Work Text:

I.
In Heaven’s harsh dominion,
the only gentle thing
was the smile of the angel.
II.
Before the Beginning
Ocean-green eyes, deep and warm.
A hopeful first glance.
Hair soft and incandescent.
III.
1941 date night
Eyes averted, dreamy,
cocoa-brown.
By his heart,
candelight blazes bright.
IV.
The Bastille
Silver pearl luminous in the shadows.
Angel lush in fine brocade and lace
risks it all for what he craves.
V.
I do not know which to prefer,
the pleasure of indulgence
or the pleasure of innuendoes,
the angel eating his cake
or the sounds just after.
VI.
Driving to Edinburgh
Pretty lips downturned,
eyes wide with dismay.
The angel just wanted
to be enveloped by yellow.
Please don’t sell the books!
VII.
Very nice
Face tilted up,
smoky-quartz eyes peering down.
Imperious, regal, commanding.
Who’s a good demon?
VIII.
Rome
Eyes crinkled in delight,
radiating sunlight
at the enemy.
Hair a soft nest
of seashell-coloured threads.
IX.
When the angel ascended
to blinding whiteness,
he fought his way back
to black, red, and gold.
X.
In the backroom
Lips parted, heart racing.
Eyes glinting like grey moonstones.
Flustered and wanting.
Walls the colour of warm yellow.
XI.
Job
A sunflower blooming
a gold crown.
Undercover
with the enemy.
A small smile,
content.
XII.
To the world
Eyes scrunched
and twinkling,
cheeks flushed rose.
So pleased
to have been called
a bastard.
XIII.
The wide, wide world
sleeps in peace.
The angel must be reading,
reclined,
a snake curled up
in his lap.
