Work Text:
Ugh, they're taking So long.
There was a small car honk outside that made the desperate and impatient Akita Neru look through the window. Her apartment wasn't too far off the ground, but it was high enough just that she can see the usual evening traffic that was beginning to form right outside of the window. Cars of several models and colors were all lined up on the road, some honking, some silent, all trying to get home from work and spend the rest of their day at home with their families, friends, partners, or otherwise.
No matter how much she scanned those roads, there wasn't a single familiar car there that would indicate that her girlfriends, world-famous idols Hatsune Miku and Kasane Teto, were on their way home. It was a signal that meant her stupid idiot girlfriends that Neru definitely does not love was, in fact, like they did say, running home late.
There was another honk, louder and higher pitched that it made Neru's ears ring faintly and very annoyingly. When she couldn't figure out which car it was, she chose to glare at the window she had stared through as if it was the offender instead.
After a few seconds and realizing how much of an idiot she might've looked especially to two Certain people that might or might not come bursting through the door and look at her at that moment, Neru looked away and onto the phone she was holding. The messaging app she had opened was still on the same state she left it on 15 seconds ago before she decided to gaze out the window like a wistful widow.
Hah, that rhymed.
Absentmindedly, Neru began scrolling through her latest chat with her girlfriends.

Neru's eyes briefly flicked over to the clock — 06:39 PM now — and back to the last image Teto sent. It was just a selfie, really, one that didn't have to make Neru look at it thrice every two seconds with varying levels of flustered and admiration every time. Because, in the photo was her two girlfriends. Teto was standing close to the camera making a peace sign with her visible hand and smiling wide, while Miku was standing a bit far off, holding her phone, and flashing a grin to the camera pointed at her. Those two damn smiles. It felt a little silly, blushing over smiles that she had seen a multitude of times lately. But Neru reasoned with herself that she hadn't seen them practically all day, so surely, sureeely, this is natural and did not look stupid at all. Yes.
Thunk! Neru's chin roughly collided with the dining table as she groaned loudly in irritation. Truthfully, she wanted more than almost anything to just put yesternight's dinner in the microwave, eat, go to sleep and wake up with her two loving girlfriends ready to greet her in the morning... Almost.
More than that, what she wanted was...
Well. She... imagined two of her favorite people in their stupid color coded starry pajamas to lay in Neru's oversized bed while they beckon her to join them. She imagined... red hair tickling her nose, cyan ones sprawled on every nook and cranny of the bed, wrapping everyone and everything in a tight, hairy hug — gross, really, that hair would find its way to Teto's mouth one way or another — and finally, Neru imagined... entangling limbs, soft breaths and snores, beating hearts, and body heat colliding in all the right places. There would be some movements, some heads turning, a few ending up in weird places...
Neru shuddered as her cheeks turned red. Uuugh, this is so childish. She felt like a lovestruck teenager and she hated that she can't bring herself to deny it.
Neru glanced, again, at the multifunctional rectangular yellow wannabe clock that uselessly laid in her hands, 06:59 PM — she seriously just waddled in her own yearning and misery for 20 minutes, didn't she? — and decided that... it would be too early for bed. She would have to do something more than just microwaving a rock cold slice of pizza and half-cup noodles, she reasoned.
For the nth time today, she looked over her chats with her girlfriends. Miku had told her not to cook anything for them, but Neru knew that Miku was just saying that to convince her to not wait for them. But Miku and Teto will be home sooner or later anyway, and a cold soup can be reheated back. If Neru went to bed now with cold food and cold bed she might just not wake up ever, and the thought of going to bed and never seeing her stupid idiot girlfriends because their stupid idiot asses sent her to bed early is enough to make her get up the chair of the dining table and do something.
So, there she was, 7 PM and chopping vegetables like her life depended on it. Washing the carrots, peeling potatoes, dicing the tomatoes — red as Teto's hair, and putting in the ultimate ingredient of their home, leeks — a certain cyan-haired girl had something to do with this, of course.
In between all the work, Neru somehow managed to snatch her phone off the dining table and fumbled with the volume and apps until it finally settled on playing a playlist in which the name Neru was only vaguely familiar of.
Regardless, it played. It was a bit too loud than intended — Neru considered that it might be heard by neighbors, but she couldn't find it in herself to be bothered — and what came out was a poppy, bubbly 2000s J-pop genre music with stupid corny lyrics about asking someone out in the most roundabout way possible, it didn't fit Neru's music taste at all, and she briefly wondered if Teto messed with her playlists again — but, once again, Neru couldn't find it in herself to care about it.
The corny song reminded Neru of a music video that was recently released featuring both Miku and Teto who sang about some sort love triangle the two trapped themselves in. Like now, the filming session for that song also had to force them to spend overtime in order to get it done in time. But at least, that time, Neru was there to see them in person rather than being left alone in her home. Neru never cared so much about the song itself, it wasn't up to her tastes either. But right now, as she mouthed the lyrics to the J-pop song she had found herself enjoying, weirdly enough, Neru imagined herself being a part of the music video, playing the person Miku and Teto was dancing their feelings around.
Indulging has never felt so good.
Her hips swayed to the upbeat lyrics as she prepped and cooked. Neru imagined Miku, cyan hair entering in and out of her vision as the imagined version of her girlfriend softly grabbed her by the waist and they both twirl around the kitchen, elbows and knees hitting things around them. For a moment, Neru felt like a highschooler again, living in those times where the three of them would sneak off their least favorite teacher's class to find an empty classroom and taught each other to sing, dance and speak with their hands. The kitchen was filled with giggles and laughter until Neru couldn't see Miku anymore, and even then, she didn't stop.
The rhythm she had willingly chucked herself into between cooking and dancing was addicting, even as another song started, still very upbeat and J-pop-y, Neru danced all the same. And she did not want to stop. So, the yellow-haired girl stepped to the fridge and grabbed any other food that she can cook. A container of Haku's trademark preseasoned chicken steak entered the picture, ready to be cooked — the provided steak sauce attached to side of the container was a familiar shade of red.
As Neru turned up the heat for the chicken — and turned down the one for the vegetable soup — the song started slowing down for its bridge, and Neru, turning around, found herself face to face with a pair of twindrills for hair. Imagined, of course, the curly hair was so much thicker than Neru was familiar with — designed specifically for the eye candy that is the aforementioned music video — but the face staring, as uncharacteristically serious as it was, was undoubtedly Hers.
With Neru backed into a cabinet, the red-haired girl in front of her started leaning closer. The song turned into a brief monologue, a confession, and Neru was well aware that nothing but empty, waveless air will ever escape her mouth, but she mouths the confession anyway. The hands she usually spoke with did nothing but reach forward until it met the other person's arms. Red, intense but calming, filled Neru's vision for a moment. And then it was gone, the song had ended.
And Neru did not stop.

Going home now :) you better be asleep!
...
In her daze, Neru couldn't remember when the front door sounded with the click of an open door, or what time it was when it occured. All she knew was that, at the time, the dining table was full of food, the sink full of dishes, her own legs sore, and the room was momentarily fully taken over by the voices of the two familiar figures who sounded half annoyed, half confused, and amused at the same time, somehow.
There were sounds and clinks of plates and forks and spoons and a conversation where everyone sounded tired, but happy. After that, in a blink Neru found herself from eating at the the dining table to being led to bed, two different hands clasped over her own two ones each. Smiles, two different ones, as Neru was pushed to bed without much fight.
She couldn't remember what they were wearing — in hindsight, those admittedly adorable matching pajamas might've been used that week already — But it didn't matter anymore. Red hair tickled her nose, cyan ones all over the bed and everything on it. Limbs entangled, breaths softening after every second, cyan snores, two beating hearts, and everything warm and right in this world. The sleepy and no longer desperate Akita Neru finally got what she wanted.
